THRASI-IER HALL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BANKERS AND MERCHANTS NOTE-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,885, dated March 19, 1889.
Application filed September 1, 1888- Serial N0.284,343. (N0 model.)
To (LZZ whom it 77mg concern:
Be it known that I, .T. B. THRASHER HALL, of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bankers and Merchants Note-Cases, of which the follc wing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to indexes; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
The particular object of my invention is to provide an improved note-case for the use of bankers, merchants, and others, by the use of which notes falling due on any day of the month or any month in the year can be instantly found and referred to, although of course it may be used for temporary filing letters, bills, and similar papers.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved case opened and having an improved index-book located in one of the pockets, and Fig. 2 is a view of said index-book (which forms a part of the invention) opened.
A represents the note-case as a whole, and B the index-book, which accompanies said case. Neither can be used separately with the same success that attends them when used together. The case consists of a series of pockets, 0, closed at their lower edges and open at their upper edges, and provided with folding end pieces, 71, which connect them together, the upper edge of each pocket being cut away at a and severally indexed thereat by date, the first thirty-one pockets, begin.- ning at the front end, P, of the case, being in deXed by the succeeding days of the month, while the twelve following are indexed by the months of the year, and the whole is secured to and adapted to be inelosed by a suitable cover, N, of leather or other material. I prefer to locate a plain pocket, 1', (devoid of an indexmark,) next adjacent to the end piece, I, of the cover, and to locate another pocket, I), (also devoid of index-mark) between the last pocket of the series that is marked by days and the first that is marked by months, as shown. This pocket D is marked upon its upper edge with the words Unfinished business and incidentals, and is adapted to receive miscellaneous papers or anything that can properly be placed within it.
The cover N is provided with the usual fastening-strap, O, at one end, and loop R,
which latter is engaged by said strap at the opposite end, or any suitable fastening may be employed. Index-book B is also inclosed by a suitable cover, N, having strap Q and a loop or other fastening, and it consists of a series of leaves, I) and c, bound as a book at one edge to said cover, severally indexed at their margin alphabetically, and having opposite facing pages correspondingly numbered, one page being left blank, except the usual horizontal rulings and the word Name at the top, While the opposite facing page is marked at the top with the words When due, and is ruled into small rectangular spaces such as 6 and 8and a list of the months in a year is arranged in vertical lines directly above the spaces (5 and 8 before mentioned. In other words, the sheets forming the index book B are arranged for the names of the makers or indorsers of notes on one side, and the opposite side of the sheets are marked \Vhen due, and provided with a list of the months making up a year and a suitable number of spaces for reception of the day of the month.
\Vith this construction the operation of my invention willbe as follows: The names of the various makers or indorsers of notes are written upon the horizontal lines under Name, and (to illustrate) if notes fall due on the 8th of February and the 6th of June the figures 6 and 8, respectively, are placed in spaces in a vertical line with these particular months and directly opposite the names on the opposite page. Then the various notes are arranged in proper order in pockets 0, so as to correspond with the dates in the indexbook. Notes falling due within the current month are arranged in pockets 0, while those becoming due in future months are placed in the twelve pockets E. The index-book B is to be normally located in the first pocket, i, where it will be protected, and maybe readily referred to at any time. By the arrangement 5 I claim is 1. A case for use in filing notes, &c., com.- prising, first, a series of thirty-one pockets connected at the ends and having their upper edges cut away, as described, and indexed by T0 the succeeding days of the montlnand twelve additional. pockets which. are similarly constructed and indexed by the months of the year, in combination with an inclosing-cover and an index-book having its leaves bound I 5 and indexed alphabetically, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A case for use in filing notes, &c., comprising the combination of, first, a series of thirty-one connected pockets indexed by the days of the month; second, twelve additional pockets indexed by months of the year, and, third, a removable and (so-operative indexbook composed of bound leaves indexed alphabetically and having opposite facing pages correspondingly numbered and provided with a list of months and corresponding rectangular blank spaces, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I atfix my sign ature in presence of two witnesses.
J. B. THRASHER HALL.
