lM PRQVEMENT IN WRITI NG-TABLETS'.

Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 204,138, dated May 28, 1878; application filed January 22, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known. that I, WILLIAM O. DAVIS, of

Bloomington, in the county of McLean, and in a the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blank Tablets; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tablet, with the cover in a raised position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.

Heretofore memorandum or blank tablets, check-books, &c., have been formed by scour-- ing the edges of the sheets ofpaper to a thin backing of paper, or in sewing or stitching the sheets together, and in separating them a short distance from the ends of the sheets by or through a line of perforations. In such construction, however, the sheets of paper are more or less torn in separating them, besides leaving rough edges, and also requiring the cover to be secured thereto by stitching or sewing.

My invention is intended to obviate the defects above referred to; and to this end the invention consists in a memorandum or blank tablet formed by securing the edges of one end of the sheets to a plain or smooth wooden strip by means of glue, paste, or other suitable adhesive material.

It further consists in the combination, with said tablet, consisting of the sheets of paper secured to a smooth wooden strip, of a cover, also glued or pasted to said wooden strip, all as hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawing, B represents the blank or other sheets of paper, having the edges of one end of the sheets glued or pasted to one side of a smooth wooden strip,'O.

E represents the top cover, andAthe bottom board or cover, of the tablet, and which are united together by a muslin or other cloth strip, D, which passes around and is secured to said wooden strip 0 by means of glue, paste, or other suitable adhesive material.

The wooden strip to which the paper sheets 7 are adhesively secured not only holds the paper firm until the lastsheets are torn off, I

but it tends to stiffen the tablet and give it the proper heft and smoothness, which is always desirable for fast writing.

The paper sheets being fastened at one end only give the writer an opportunity to turn the sheets and complete his writing before tearing off the written sheets, and thus avoiding the possibility of losing his manuscript.

The paperis much easier detached than when perforated, and leaves a smooth clean surface. The tablet does not have to be started, nor is there danger of tearing the sheets in the center, as the sheets tear off smooth whether caught in the center or at the ends.

The tablet, when provided with a cover, keeps the sheets clean, thus forming a durable pocket pencil memoranda, and, as the sheets do not have to be perforated, is made much cheaper.

The cover and back can be refilled and used over and over again, thus giving a durable book at a small expense.

In. using the wooden strip for blocking letter-heads, bill-heads, receipts, statements, &c., it does away with the expense of binding in book form, and at the sametime possesses all the advantages claimed for expensive bind- I do not desire to limit my invention to blank tablets, as it is also adapted for securing printed sheets, such as bank-checks, drafts, notes, receipts, and bill and letter paper.
