SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,073, dated April 5, 1892. Application filed July 18,1891. Serial No. 399,941. (No model.) Patented in England March 26, 1890 No. 4,765.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM PENMAN, residing at London, England, have invented an Improvement in Note-Books or the Like, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 4,765, dated March 26, 1890,) of

which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is mainly to construct note-books or the like in such a manner that they can carry within them a pencil, or it may be a pen, which wherever the book is opened is exposed to view and can be taken out and used. To effect this, I cut a long slot in the center of all of the several leaves of the book where in the ordinary way they would be bound to the back. .In this way a cavity is formed at the back of the book, within which a-pencil can lie, and whereever the book may be opened the pencil can be taken out from the cavity and used.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a face view of an open note-book formed in the manner above described. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, and Fig. 3 an edge view, of the book when closed. Fig. 4 is a section through the line a b, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar section when the book is opened near one cover.

The several leaves I bind to the back at top and bottom above and below the ends of the slot and afterward cover the back with leather or other material in the ordinary way of book-binding.

From Figs. 1, 4, and 5 it will be clearly seen that wherever the book is opened the pencil or pen lying in it is ready at hand, and when the book is closed, with the pen or pencil resting, as it does, in the hollow formed within the leaves, there is no bulging of the back; neither does the pen or pencil tend to make it gap.

The book can be made in a variety of sizes and with bindings of various kinds.

If desired, the pencil may be formed with an enlarged head and the slot in the leaves be cut of corresponding form. In this way the pencil when lying in the cavity would be kept from all endwise movement whether the pencil were long or short.

Where the leaves are perforated in a line from top to bottom, near to the back, so that they may readily be torn out, this line of perforations is made at a distance in from the edge of the slot, so that even when most of the leaves have been torn away there is still sufficient left of each leaf to keep the cavity properly inclosed, so that the pencil may be retained within it.

It is deemed of special importance to have the slot cut out from the center of the notebook, whereby the pencil is held in place and from longitudinal movement by the pressure of the paper. By this means the use of springclips, &c., is avoided.

Having now described my invention, what I claim is A note-book or the like provided with a slot cut out from the center of the several leaves, so as to form a cavity within which a pen or pencil may lie and which cannot-be removed unless the book is opened.
