Description

PATENTED MAR J. J. HOEY. MEMORANDUM BOOK. APPLIOATIQN FILED MAR.11. 1905.
W MH M WITNESSES:
'Afro/mns JOHN J. HOEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MEMORANDUM-BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 13, 1906.
Application led March l1, 1905. Serial No. 249,658.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. HOEY, a citizen Of the United States, and a resident Of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Memorandum-Book, Of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to a memorandumbook.
The Object of the invention is to produce a memorandum-book or note-book which is especially adapted for making notes which may be detached therefrom, so that a substantially clear page will be continually presented to receive entries.
The invention is expected to be most useful for keeping small memoranda which would be of a temporary character and which would be torn from the book in a short time. Where an ordinary note-book would be used for making entries of this kind, these entries would be scratched olf from time to time, and considerable time would be consumed inlooking through the different pages to find a particular memorandum desired.
The special purpose lof this invention is to facilitate the nding of memoranda which are still useful and preserved in the book.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part Of this specification, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and in which- Figure l is a perspective showing a memorandum-book of my invention lying open. Fig. 2 -is a longitudinal section taken near one extremity of the book and Fig. 3 is a plan of a detachable memorandum-ribbon, a plurality Of which constitute a portion Of the body of the book.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents a memorandum-book which comprises a cover 2, of stiff material, such as cardboard or other material used in notebooks for this purpose.
The body 3 of the book is composed of a plurality of sheets laid together in the usual manner and bound together at the back 4 of the book. These sheets are provided near their bound edge with longitudinal perforations 5, and the bodies of the sheets of the principal portion of the book are provided with transverse slits 6, which divide the same into a plurality of narrow strips Or ribbons 8,
which are detachable at the perforate lines 5. These slits preferably do not pass through all Of the leaves; but the rear portion 7 of the book is preferably composed ofleaves of the common form usually found in note-books. IV
prefer that the slits 6 should extend through substantially two thirds of the leaves or pages.
In using the memorandum-book entries would be made On the ribbons lying uppermost, and when for any reason the memorandum thus made would become useless instead of scratching it off, as is often done in practice in keeping notes in ordinary notebooks, the ribbon would be detached and thrown away. It should of course be the aim of the person using the book to keep all portions of the surface of the front page substantially flush with each other, so that those parts of the book containing the greatest number of ribbons will be usually chosen to receive the entries. In this way when it is desired to find any note in a book it is not necessary tO look through a number of leaves, as the note desired will usually be found upon the exposed face of the book when the cover is opened.
In practice I prefer to have the ribbons or slips 8 about one-half an inch in width but these may be varied in width to suit the particular circumstances.
The note-book described above evidently constitutes a novel means for keeping temporary notes in a readily-accessible manner and should have a wide general usefulness for all purposes where memoranda of a temporary character must be kept.
Having thus described claim as new and desire to Patent- A memorandum-book having its rear portion composedof a plurality Of full leaves and having the leaves of its forward portion divided by parallel transverse slits into a plurality of ribbons, said ribbons having perforate lines enabling the same to be detached near one extremity thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN J. HOEY.
my invention, I secure by Letters Witnesses:
F. D. AMMEN, EvERARD BOLTON MARSHALL.
