UNITEDV STATES PATENT. FEICE;
HERMAN sixBn-Y, or izrrtvvinist,i,Newv YORK.-`V
jAoCoUNr-BooK.
SPECIFICATION forming part ef Lettersratent No. 758,220; dated Aprile@ 1904.
Appleman and .ingaat 1e, 19032 To all whom it nfl/Cty cof/werp,.- v
Be it known that I, HERMAN SIxBEY, a resident of Mayville, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsjin Account- Books; andl do hereby declare the following to -be a full, clear, and exact description of the f invention, such as Willenable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use f the same. v f V y The invention relates to account, memorandum, or other like books, and has for its. object to provide a convenient, eiiicient,: and economical book in which to write accounts or memoranda of any kind and in which the sheets ofwriting-paper are removable and easily renewable. Y d y The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and pointed out. In thel accompanying drawings, Figure l is l an end view of the book. Fig.2 isa planA of one of the sections of the book, comprising a stiff leaf with tablets or bunches of leaves of, writing-paper attached, the lowerrbunch being omitted and the attachment of a bunch on the opposite face of the leafA indicated by broken lines.` Fig. 3 is a partial section oni line 3 3 of Fig. 2. l
Numeral l denotes a cover o f any suitable or desirable kind'and of any convenient size. It may have a flexible back, an ordinary back, or a' covered wood or metal back. In the present instance six blocks lxzare fixed inthe back and are connected by means of suitablyl attached strips of canvas i toI three stiff leaves 2, conveniently made of paper-board or equivalent, and to two intermediate leaves 3 p1efer-- ably made of thinner and lighter material,y but thicker than ordinary Writing-paper. To the stiff leaves 2 and on each face are secured tablets or bunches ofvleaves of writing-paper suitably ruled, if desired, for theparticular purpose for which the book maybe intended, and they may also have any suitable words or figures printed thereon. ln the instance illustrated three tablets or bunches of sheets are detachably connected on each side of every stiff leaf 2, and it is proposed to appropriate these, except the last bunch on the back face of the third sheet 2, to groups of letters or to stati up. 169,318. (no model.)
l l" letters off the alphabet, beginningwithgthe rangement and appropriation of the. bunches to alphabetical groups has been found convenient in using the -book as aledger; but it should be understood. that the appropriation of portions of the paperto particular letters is not material and that theinventionis. not
limited to any number of stiff and intermediate sheets nor tol any number of bunches of. writing-paper nor to any particular use. In the present instance the paper bunchesjare detach.-
' ably secured to the leaves 2 by means of wire fasteners 8 ybent about the'ends 9'of the paper bunches and extended through holes 5 in the leavesor boards 2 near theirV inner edges or through holes vd neartheir outer edges, the wire ends being bent back against the boards to fasten the bunches in place. These holes maybe eyeleted, if preferred. Thebunches thus attached each to a leaf 2 by Wires 8, passing through holes 5 near its inner edge, are situated on the front. face of the leaf, and those similarly'attached by means ofA holes 6 arefsitw ated on the succeeding face, from which arrangement it follows that in all the bunches the paper will be similarly arranged, so that the writing thereonfwill be from .theLleft to the right. For convenience the paper of the bunches is provided with dovetail portions 9,
aboutwhich the wirerfasteners are. bentg. as
the detachment o f the vbunch and alsothatfin cases where the leaves of the bunches have been filled with desired entries made according to any preferred order the bunches may beidetached and their separate sheets redistributed in another order. rIhus if the entries be made on sheets in duplicate or triplicate or other number the sheets can be easily' distributed according to any desired classification, and' yfor this general purpose-or'other purposes manifolding -ipaper can be `used as circumstances indicate. Single sheets Imaybe detached from the fastened bunch bypulling the dovetail-underthe wire either with or without folding under the tips 11.
I am vaware that supplementary cards and tablets or bunches of leaves have been lat- Same.
tached'to stiff boolcleaves and alsolthat'one or more details of myv construction have'been used heretofore, and I do not broadly claim vsuch devices. My improvement comprises a bookhaving stiff leaves and bunches of leaves detacha'bly` connected thereto independently ofthe book-cover, said bunches having 'approximately the length of the width of the stiff leaves'and connected to both faces of each of the latter adjacent their left edges. The bunches are attached near the inner edge of theleft-hand-'face or page of each stiff cover and near the outer edge of lthe succeeding page. The bunches on the'rightehand face of the leaf being attached near itsfree edgewill upon turning thel leaf, as in opening the book, be c'arrried into suitable position for Writing thereon. The attachmenty of bunches to oppositev faces orl pagesrfof' the same leafalso obviates interference ofthe fastenings. The wire fastenings situatedfata considerable distance fromthe'ba'ck of the book are distinct from the bookbinding and are conveniently applied to or removed from the bunches, as required. rIhe simple dovetail portion formed at the right end of each bunch, approximately in length the width of the bunch, provides a means of securely holding thefsheetsof the The spacing-blocks being fixed to the back and the stifl" leaves being connected to thembyiiexible material provision is thereby made for space for the bunches or tablets and for easy 'manipulation of the bunch -laden leaves, and the whole, comprising the special arrangement of bunches and the yparticular means for attaching and detachingtliem, is a practically new article well adapted for uses such-asherein suggested. Y
Having described my invention, what I claim asnewfand desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A book-cover, spacing-blocks fixed to the 'cover-back, stiff leaves therein secured to the blocks by iexible strips, means for removably securing bunches of ruled or other suitable paper tothe stiff leaves, and intermediate leaves, said latter leaves having flexible connection with the spacing-blocks.
2. A book having a stiff leaf provided with holes, a bunch of -p'aper provided at oneend with a dovetail portion'having a length approximating the width -of the bunch, and a wire fastening surrounding said portion and lpassedfthrough-the holes and then bent down upon the leaf, said -wirebeing flexible 'and independent of the bookbinding whereby the hunch'maybe detachedand either replaced or another substituted and secured by the same fastening withoutinjury to the book.
3. A book having a stiff leaf, bunches of paper secured on said leaf on opposite sides and at opposite edges, each of said edgesbeing situated at the left when the leaf and tablets thereonare suitably disposed'for writing.
4c. A book having a stiff leaf, bunches of paper secured'on said leaf and on oppositesides and at opposite edges, each of said edges being situated at the left when-the leaf land tablets thereon are suitably disposed for writing, and intermediate leaves -to keep the paper clean 'and in order.
5. The book having aleaf provided with a detachable bunch ofpaper'comprisinga plurality of sheets, and means for connecting the bunch to the leaf, 'sai'd means consisting of iiexible wire bent about the bunch and extended through the leaf, said wirebeing iiexible and. independent ofthe bookbinding whereby the bunch may be detached and .either-replaced or lanother substituted and secured by the same lfastening without injury to the book.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
