In filing letters andI other papers it is customary to place them in a file or binder consisting of a sheet of cardboard orthe like folded in the center toy provide a front and back between which the letters are placed. Ordinarily the letters are placed loose in the binder and there is always a possibility ofletters being lost. In addition to this it is very diflicult to keep the letters in proper order. No means are provided for holding the letters and they are very apt to become disarranged.l It is customary to file correspondencel in order of dates to enable the iile clerk or other person to lreadily locate a certain letter. In the present invention I provide means which may be readily attached to any form of' binder now on the market for securely holdingthe letters in place. rlfhe attachment is simple, may be readilyapplied and operates efliciently.

When the attachment is'appliedto a binder the free edge may be folded over the face and paper fasteners, or other fastening means passed through the eyelets or openings from the top and through'the edges of the sheets of paper to be filed. ,When the binder is employed in this way the oldest letter is arranged on top with the latest paper at thebackof the folder. The attachment may be employed for tiling letters in reverse order with theoldest letter at the back of the binder. Metal eyelets or other reinforcing means may be placed in these openings. The openings are further reinforced by means of strips of cloth 8 or other material secured to the back of the device and extending over the openings. As shown in Figures l and 2 the binder is adapted to be used for tiling letters or other papers with the oldest paper on top. The free edge of the attachment is folded over the face on the line of creases and paper fasteners 9 are passed through the openings (7) and then through the openings arranged in the papers to be filed, and their ends bent over onto the lowermost paper.

In Figure 3 of the drawings I have shown the attachment in detail, and in this figure the same reference numerals are used to designate the various parts.

Referring to Figures. 4f and 5 of the drawings the attachment is here shown applied to a file or binder and arranged to permit filing of letters in reverse order, that is, with the latest paper on top. As shown, the free edge is folded under the body portion B and paper fasteners (9) are passed through the two series of openings and then through the openings arranged in the papers to be led and their ends bent over onto the uppermost paper. The free edge may also be folded over the body portion with the saine effect. Or the fasteners may only be put through the one free edge.

As shown in Figures l to 5 of the drawings the device is provided with two or more openings in each series. However. the device may be made with a single opening in each series. A construction of this character is shown in Figure 6 wherein openingl0 is arranged between the series of creases and the strip of adhesive and opening 1l is arranged in the free edge. the two openings being snbstantiallv equidistant from the series-of creases. The attachment shown in Figure 6 of the drawings may be employed in Vtiling the letters with the oldest letter on top as illustrated in Figure l orit mav be used in the reverse manner with the latest letter on top as illustrated in Figure 4.

In the drawings the device is shown attached to the binder near the inner edge of the back fold and the papers to be filed are arrangedin the binder with the fastening means passing throughV openings near the edge of the sheets. The attachment may be placed in the binder near the top .and the openings in the letters or papers arranged near the top edge if desired. c

Any type of paper fastener may be employed for securing the letters or other papers in position. The attachment is best made with the openings of each series a uniform distance from each other to adapt it to the use of paper fasteners now on the market. By arranging the openings a uniform distance from each other, the letters may be punched for filing by certain machines now on the market wherein a single operation punches two holes in a sheet of paper a standard distance from each other.

"N here I have employed the word letters in this specification or in the statement of claims to designate papers to be filed, it has been employed simply for convenience, and it is to be understood that any papers whether letters or other matter may be filed in a binder with this attachment and securely held in position. ln the drawings the binders are shown of a size to receive letter sheets. The attachment may also be employed for filing legal papers, documents, drawings, maps, supplements, music sheets and the like in binders of a proper size to hold such papers.

That I claim is l. An article of manufacture comprising a cover having two sections arranged to enclose papers to be filed, a paper-holding attachment secured at one end to one of said sections and having two series of openings spaced apart and adapted to register with each other when said attachment is folded upon itself, and fastening means carried by the said paper-holding attachment and arranged to pass through registering openings.

2. An article of manufacture comprising a cover having two sections arranged to enclose rpapers to be tiled, a paper-holding attachment secured at one end to one of said sections and having two series of openings spaced apart and adapted to register with each other when said attachment is folded upon itself. the said attachment being provided with a crease for folding purposes and with-an additional parallel crease on each side of the first-mentioned crease and fastening means carried by the said attachment and arranged to pass through registering openings.

3. An article of manufacture comprising a cover having two sections arranged to enclose papers to be filed. a paper-holding attachment secured at one end to one of said sections and having two series of openings spaced apart and adapt-ed to register with each other when said attachment is folded upon itself. reinforcing means surrounding p the openings. and fastening means carried bv the said attachment and arranged to pass through registering openings.

4e. An article of manufacture comprising an attachment for file systems, said attachiment consisting of a body portion. means for securing the body portion to a cover,

the body portion being provided With a number' of creases spaced from the securing means to provide a folding flap and having two sets of spaced openings, the spaced openings of one set adapted to register With the spaced openings of another set when the said attachment is folded upon itself, fastening devices carried by said attachment in said openings, whereby the folding flap may be fold-ed over the remainder of the body portion 'for tiling papers in book form, or may be folded beneath the remainder of the body portion for filing papers in the reverse order.

5. An attachment for file systems comprising a sheet of flexible material having means for attaching one edge to a cover, the

said sheet being creased at one point to provide a folding flap, the folding flap being provided with spaced holes and the remainder of the said sheet being provided `With spaced holes, the spaced holes of the lap and the spaced holes of the remainder of the sheet being an equal distance from the saidcrease whereby when the flap is folded over the remainder of the sheet the spaced holes of the flap will register With the spaced holes of the remainder of the sheet, and fastening'means carried by the said sheet and arranged to pass through registering holes.
