UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
:PHOTOGRAPH-ALBUM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1921.
Application led .Tune 16, 1919. Serial No. 304,475.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LUorLn L. Wri'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kiel, county of Manitowoc, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and` useful Improvements in Photograph-Albums, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in photograph albums.
Modern photographs are mounted upon cards which are provided with side flaps adaplied to fold upon and protect the photograp The object of my invention is to provide an album having sheets or leaves provided with retainers adapted to receive and hold photograph mounting cards of differing sizes, and to allow the cover flaps to freely fold or unfold without disturbing the retaincrs,--said retainers, however, being adapted to so engage the card or mounting as to leave the photograph fully exposed to view.
A further object of my lnvention is to provide means for retaining the cover flaps norf mally in folded position and readily releasing them when it is desired to inspect the photograph.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of one page and a portion of the cover of my improved album showing a photograph engaged by the retainers, the cover flaps being in folded position and the Hap retainers being also in retaining position.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view drawn on line 2--2 of Fig. l.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters in both views.
Each leaf of my improved album is preferably composed of three sheets of cardboard, l, 2, and 3, res ectively. Thev sheets 1 and 3 are longitudinally slitted from a point near the top of the leaf to a point near its bottom, and in a manner to provide groups of retaining bands 5, which are parallcl to the outer margin of the leaf. The groups of bands are separated from each other by intervening strips or wider bands 6, which are secured preferably throughout their length to the intermediate sheet of cardboard 2 by means of any suitable adhesive material. The sheet of cardboard l is also preferably secured in a similar manner to the sheet 2 along all of its margins, but the retainer bands 5 are unsecured except at their top and bottom ends where they are integrally connected with the top and bottom margins of the sheet l. Therefore, each of the bands 5 may be individually and separately lifted from the plane occupied by the sheet to permit an insertion of the photograph mounting card underneath the 'lifted band.
Another set of bands 7, preferably composed of tape or other suitable fabric, are secured to the sheet 1 near its inner margin in a position with these bands extending transversely of the bands 5 to points near the outer margin of the sheet, where these bands may be detachably secured by means of snap fastenings 8 of ordinary construction, or by any other suitable fastening means adapted to allow the outer ends of these bands to be readily engaged or disengaged from the outer margin of the sheet 1.
The sheet 3 will be similarly slitted longitudinally to provide retainer bands 5, intermediate gumined strips or fixed bands 6, with the margins of the sheet gummed or otherwise secured to the intermediate sheet 2, and with retainer bands 7 crossing the bands 5, and having their outer ends detachably secured by snap fastenings.
All other pages of the album are similarly formed, each page being preferably composed of 3 cardboard sheets with the outer sheets slitted nearly from top to bottom to form groups of retainer bands as above described. It is possible to dispense with the intermediate cardboard sheet, but it is preferably used in order that the adjustment of photographs on one side of a page may not interfere with the adjustment or arrangement of photographs on the other side, it being desirable that cach page in the album should receive photographs on both sides to economize space.
A convenient means for securing the inner ends of the tapes or cross bands 7 is to pass their inner ends underneath the inner margin of the sheet l (or 3) preparatory to adhesively securing such margin and band 7 to the intermediate sheet 2, the adhesive material thus being utilized to secure the bands, and also to secure the margin of the sheet l to the intermediate or backing sheet 2.
The inner margin of each leaf is preferably provided with a binding strip 10, composed of fabric gummed or otherwise secured to the leaf and also engaged and bound in an ordinary binding l1, flexibly connected With the covers 12, whereby the various leaves of the album are secured t0- gether in bool; form.
ln use, When it is desired to mount a photograph in the album, one of the cross bands 7 Will be released iroin the leaf at its outer end, after which one of the bands 5 will be raised by inserting a paper cutter or the blade of a knife or other tool into the slit at one side oi' the margin of the selected band to lift the band sufficiently to alloriT vone cover flap of the photograph card to pass across the space underneath the lifted band, and then this flap will be drawn through until the margin ot the mounting card is adjusted underneath the selected reried across the cover flaps and secured by its fastening` to the outer marginal portion of thepage or leaf of the album. By having the strips (i of no greater width than the smallest photograph card to be mounted inv the album, and by having the retaining bands' narrow and arranged in groups as above described, it is obvious that photograph cards of varying sizes and differing lengths and widths may be readily mounted i in thealbum, and by having a pluralitT of flap retaining cross bands it will be possible to release anyv one of them for the inspection of a photograph Without releasing any covering lexcept those controlled by the re- V'leased band.
` I claim:
l. A photograph album having leaves provided with substantially parallel Hat card retaining bands arranged in `groiuas extending from the top to the bottom margins there0i'i,'said bands being grouped whereby a photograph card may be engaged adjacent to its edges by one band trom each of two groups.
2. n. photograph albuni having leaves provided with substantially parallel ilat card retaining bands extending uninterruptedly from the top to the bottoni margins thereof, and with each leat composed. olf` a plurality oit sheets adhesively connected with each other along their margins.
3. A. photograph album having` leaves including card receiving` sheets slitted `lfroni top to bottonrniargins to torni a series ot card engaging bands, said bands being disposed in groups of narrow bands separated 'from adjacent `groups by a wider band.
il photograph album laa'ing leaves including card receivinf sheets slitted troni top to bottoni margins to :forni a series o t card engaging' bands, and means for reinforcingv each sheet at its margins and between some olf the bands.
5. Ii.. photograph album having leaves including card receiving sheets slitted from top to bottoni margins to l'orni a series of card engawing` bands, in mnnbinatiou 'with tiap retainn l ross bands secured to the in-k ner side inaiuimz et" the leave." and havin; quick dctachal'ile eonneetion with they outer margins et the leaves.
6. fr photograph album having leaves each composed oi? a series ot sheets baring'v their margins permanently secured together in reinforcing relation, and having their outer sheets lon tudinally slitted l'roni iop to bottom mar ius to I'ornl 'juxi'zapesed groups oi card i lining bands, with inter mediate wider strips, which are secured to the other sheet between said groups, and said leaves being also provided with iexible binder niarfjfins con posed ot fabric, and transverse bands also eiinuposed of ''abrie secured at their inner ends to the lea vos and in quick detachable connection at their outer ends with the outer margins ot the leaves.
in testimony whereof l a {iix in v siuuui ure in the presence oi two witnesses.
