HARRY W. WRIGLEY AND JAMES A. RIDG-WAY, 0F MANCHESTER, ENGLAND. V
LOOSE-LEAF LEDGER, BOOK, AND THE LIKE.
' Application filed November 20, 1922. Serial No. 602,073.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat- We, HARRY Wenswon'rrr WRIGLEY and JAMES ALBERT RmewA both British subjects, residing at Manchester, county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Ledgers, Books, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loose leaf ledgers, loose leaf books, card indexes or the like, of paper, card ,or other suitable material, in which a number of leaves'or sheets are arranged to overlap one another with a margin at the lower edge of each leaf or sheet, projecting below the one above and left exposed and visible, upon which a name, subjeot or address, or reference figures or letter may be written, with a transparent sheath to protect the exposed margin.
The ledger or book may comprise a single unit or a number of such units, each unit being built up of a number of separate leaves or sheets which nest one into the next.
According to the invention the leaves or sheets which go to form a separate unit are each formed with a loop at one side (preferably the left) to receive a retaining bar and into which the edgeof the leaf or sheet above it nests, and-when nested together a single retaining bar is passed through the several loops of the assembled and nested leaves and secured in position top and bottom by a suitable means, a cover being preferably provided to enclose and protect the nested edges of the leaves-and a sheath of transparent material may also be applied to the bottom edge of each sheet to protect it during use or handling.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is an expanded blank of a single leaf or sheet A in preferred form.
Fig. 2 is a view of a single leaf or sheet folded to form loop a. 7
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a single leaf or sheet detached.
Fig. 4 is a view showing position of two leaves A or sheets nested together and secured by retaining bar B.
Fig. 5 is a view of top or uppermost leaf or sheet A.
Fig. 6 is a section of leaf or sheet A.
Fig. 7 is a separate view of a signal F.
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a single unit showing a number of leaves A. with covers Fig. 15 is a perspective view of the same closed.
The book, ledger or card index'may comprise a single unit or a plurality of such units, bound together or secured in a loose back from which any one can be removed and replaced at will.
Each unit is formed or built up of a number of leaves or sheets A, nested together and detachably secured at one edge (preferably at the left side), one leaf overlapping the 50 next and leaving a margin a along the lower edge exposed, upon which any name, address or reference figure or letter may be inscribed.
Each leaf or sheet A is folded over at the lower corner of the side retaining edge to 35 form a loop a, and is secured by an eyelet a or by a wire staple or by an adhesive or otherwise. The eyelet a also forms a stop for the lower edge of the next sheet to abut against, thusleaving a margin a along the 99 lower edge of the leaf or sheet beneath uncovered and exposed. Instead of shaping and folding over the edge of the sheet A, as shown, it may be out or shaped in any other convenient form to make an Or a strip of paper, card or fabric may be attached to it to form the loop The sheets or leaves A to any number are assembled one on top of the other with the folded or looped edge of one nested into the folded edge of the preceding sheet, and so on, thus each leaf covers the preceding one below it, with the exception of the margin a which is left exposed.
The top leaf or sheet A is preferably of 1 card and is similarly formed, with an additional eyelet a or staple or stop to bear against the back of the retaining bar B to prevent the sheets falling forward out of alignment at the opposite edge.
When the sheets A are assembled in pos1= tion a retaining bar B is passed through the enclosed loop a.
loops a formed in the several sheets extending from the top to the bottom, and is secured in position by the ends being in serted in pockets affixed to a stiff strip or cover 0 or G at the back of the sheets. Thus'each sheet or leaf A is securely held 7 in place and can be turned over to expose flexibly attached to the strip or cover C or C 'to fold over and protect the retaining edges of the sheetsA, and be secured at top and bottomby hinged clips Z) or otherwise.
Over the lower exposed margin a of each sheet a transparent sheath E of celluloid or other suitable material may be fitted to protect the edge from wear when in'use, and this may also form a pocket for coloured signals or indicators F to draw attention to the leaf or to hold an'ex'tra or additional sheet or card, and the top sheet'maybe fitted with a similar sheath E to form a pocket to contain a number of the signals F.
Each unit comprising the leaves A secured by the bar B and back cover or strip 0 and front strip or cover D, may be used separatelyor may be enclosed in additional covers D" Fig. 11, or each of the units may be providedrwith a binding strip G and a number bound into, a hooker removably secured thereto by pins or screws 9 passing through holes in the binding strips. 1 'The covers D may have applied to them at H index or reference letters or figures.
What we claim as our invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A loose leaf unit adapted for a book, ledger, card index or the like of thetype set forth, comprising a plurality of leaves, each leaf formed with a loop along one edge, and nested into the leaf below it leaving a margin exposed along the bottom eeaozse of the latter, a retaining bar passed through the loops of the several leaves, and a still back strip or cover with means to receive and secure the ends of the retaining bar.
2. A loose leaf unit adapted for a book,
ledger, card index or the like of the type set forth, comprising a plurality of leaves, each leaf formed With a loop along one edge, and nested into the leaf below it leaving a margin exposed along the bottom of the latter, a retaining bar" passed through the loops of the several leaves, and a stiff back strip or cover with means to receive and secure the ends of the retaining bar, and a stiff front strip With clips tcsecure it to the back strip.
3. A leaf or sheet adapted for use in a loose leaf book, ledger card, index or the like of the typeset'forth, folded over at leaves to secure themin position, stiff-covers,-
ineans affixed thereto to. secure the bars, a holder and'means to enclose a number of such units in the holder from which they can be removed and replaced.
