Description

R. WEINLICH SAMPLE CARRIER Nov. 14, 1939.
Filed March 8, 1939 ATTORNEY.
Patented Nov. 14, 1939 VUNVrso sers rarer oFFrcs SAMPLEI CARRIER Rudolph Wenlich, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application March 8, 1939, Serial No. 260,460
16 Claims.
This invention relates to sample carriers or display books or folders for swatches and the like and has for its principal object the provision of an improved sample carrier provided with rows of removable swatches, each row of which may be readily raised in its entirety to permit the placing of the material to be matched below a plurality of swatches at one and the same time whereby an accurate match can be made both as to color and texture of material.
A further object of the present invention is the pro-vision of such sample carrier in which the individual swatches may be readily removed and replaced for further comparison or when, for any reason, it is desired to substitute a new swatch.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of means for quickly enabling the user to identify the material by indicia on the tab of the swatch which will be Visible when the swatch is inserted in the carrier.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be obvious from a reading of the following detailed description. In the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specication, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one side of this improved sample carrier inserted as a leaf in a book with the front cover thereof removed.
Fig. 2 is a similar View of the rear of the carrier with the back cover of the book removed.
Fig 3 is an enlarged edge sectional view of a portion of the carrier taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l, illustrating the manner of securing the various parts together.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the swatch and its tab, and
Fig. 5 is a 4detail of one of the flaps illustrating its construction.
` Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several Views.
Before explaining in detail the present improvement and mode of operation thereof, I desire to have it understood that the invention is 45, not limited to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing since the invention is capable of other embodiments, and that the phraseology employed is for the purpose of description and not of limitation.
Heretofore, it has been customary to place the swatches on tabs both ends of which are inserte-d in slots of the carrier in such manner that they are securely held therein. However, when dey sired to match a piece of material it was neces- (Cl. 12S-20) sary to remove the individual swatch at both ends in order that it might be placed upon the material to be matched and for comparison therewith since, with the known constructions, it was not possible to place the material under the swatch without first removing it from the carrier because, in color matching, it is` desirable that the swatch be placed on top of the material rather than the material on top of the swatch.
The present improvement comp-rises a suitable support such as a folder or binder 2 which may be adapted to carry any number of carriers 3 which may be permanently hinged within the folder 2 or removably carried thereby by means of suitable binding posts 4 in the manner of loose leaf books, the carriers 3 being similar to the pages of a book.
Each carrier 3 in the present instance comprises a leaf or card 5 having canvas or other flexible material 6 at one edge thereof to serve as a hinge for the leaf and this flexible material may be secured thereto in any desired manner. This flexible hinged portion may be reinforced by any suitable means such as a cardboard strip l Where the carrier is inserted in the binder. The part 5 of the carrier 3 is provided with a series of flap members comprising hinged strips or stubs 8 arranged parallel to each other and, in the present instance, extend lengthwise of the carrier. These flap members 8 are secured to the card 5 of the carrier 3 in any suitable manner as by providing a covering 9 with ar series of slots I0 therein for the insertion of the extensions IIl of the iiapy members 8 and this covering 9 may be secured to the card 5 in any suitable manner as by pasting it thereon.
Each flap member 8 comprises in the present instance a pair of strips I I and I2 pasted or otherwise secured together along their edges in such manner that the lower card will have an extension to form the hinge part I. These strips are stitched together as at i3 and, for additional strength, are clamped together along the inner edges by clamps I4. These clamps may also serve as dividers to hold the inner ends of the swatch tabs against lateral displacement.
One strip, as the top strip I I, is provided with slots or pockets l5 for the insertion of tabs I6 carrying the swatches I1 and this` strip II is also provided with a series of openings I8 in line with the slots I5 through which identification indicia on the tabs I6 are visible when the tabs are inserted in the slots I5 of the flap member 8.
The swatch I1 is secured to the tab in any suitable manner by pasting the entire swatch on the tab to provide a backing therefor or it may be pasted on a shorter tab so that the material will project beyond the end of the tab.
Any suitable number of these flaps may be applied to each leaf and they may be attached to both sides if desired as shown in the drawing. When applied to the rear side of the carrier, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, it is desirable to hinge the flaps so that they face opposite to those on the front side of the carrier so that Whichever way the carrier is turned in the folder, the aps will all be raised from the same side.
In practice, each flap member will be provided with a plurality of swatches of a single color but in different shades and when it is desired to match any particular shade, the flap may be raised and the material placed below the swatch or a row of swatches can be visible for comparison with the material at one time and the desired shade immediately selected by direct comparison.
When it is desired to remove a swatch it will be evident that this may be done in a very simple manner and it is likewise easy to substitute one swatch for another, as is the case from time to time, when a new lot of material is to be substituted for that which has become exhausted.
It is to be understood that, by describing in detail herein any particular form, structure or arrangement, it is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the several claims.
Having thus explained the nature of my said invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth al1 of the forms in which it may be made, or all of the modes of its use, I claim:
