Most homemakers have many, many recipes for the preparation of various types of products, but ordinarily a homemaker finds that she will commonly use but a few of these recipes in her everyday cooking with rare exceptions. It is common practice to set down these recipes on cards so as to be easy to handle.

An object of my invention is to provide a new and improved card holder of simple and inexpensive construction and operation.

Another object of my invention is to provide a novel device for storing and holding recipe cards and the like in such positions that the cards may be easily read during use and may be easily slipped back into storage position when use of the card is completed.

A further object of my invention is the provision of a vertically adjustable card holder which is supported by the covers of a book wherein the holder and cards may be confined.

These and other objects and advantages of my invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views and in which:

The invention as shown in Figs. 1-4 includes a supporting structure which consists in a pair of book covers and 11 which are constructed of rigid material such as stiff cardboard which may be covered with suitable decorative sheet material such as embossed paper or the like. The covers 10 and 11 are swingably interconnected by a hinge-forming back portion 12 of conventional design in bookbinding so as to permit swinging of each of the covers 10 and 11 at the lines 10a and 110 respectively. A strap 13 is affixed as by a rivet 13a to the cover 11 and is connectible to the cover 10 by means of a snap coupling 14.

Means are provided for suspending a plurality of open-ended envelopes or pockets 15 between thecovers 10 and 11 when the covers are in closed condition and to allow the envelopes or pockets 15 to lie on one of the covers 11 when the covers are stood upright in the position shown in Fig. 2. In the form shown, such means include a multiple ring binding device 16 which is afiixed to the back portion 12 and is of conventional design frequently employed in looseleaf notebooks and 2,924,032 Patented Feb. 9, 1960 the like. The rings 16a thereof are adapted to open so as to permit application and removal of punched material thereto. The envelopes or pockets 15 are individually suspended from a backing 17 and are connected thereto as by a fabric binder 17a so as to permit the envelopes to be swung up, thereby permitting inspection of one of the intermediate envelopes. In the form shown, the envelopes or pockets 15 are constructed of stiff and transparent material such as celluloid and are of such sizes as to conveniently receive and carry recipe cards 18 therein. The envelopes or pockets 15 are open at both ends so as to permit cards to be inserted or removed from either end. A card-supporting device, indicated in general by numeral 19 is provided on the cover 11. The card-supporting device 19 is provided with attaching means for releasable connection with the edge of a card 18 and in the form shown, such attaching means comprise a clip 20 which includes a plurality of tines 21 which are separated by slots 22 so as to permit insertion of a card between the tines. The lower end of the clip element 26 is swingably connected to one end of a mounting link 23 by means of a pivot-forming rivet 24, and the opposite end of the mounting link 23 is swingably connected to the cover 11, as by rivet 25 at a position intermediate the upper and lower edges of the cover 11 and adjacent the open ends of the envelopes or pockets 15.

The mounting link 23 and the clip 20 are provided with means for locking the same in certain positions with respect to each other. The mounting link 23 has a pair of detents 26 formed in the outer end thereof and on opposite sides of the pivot 24, and the clip 20 also has a detent 27 formed adjacent the pivot 24 and in registering relation with respect to the detent 26 for interlocking therewith when the clip 20 is either extended into alignment with the mounting link 23 or is folded back into aligned overlying relation with the 'mounting link 23.

The recipes in each of the envelopes 15 may be organized by subject matter so that by merely turning to the proper envelope 15, a certain classification of recipes will be found and one of the recipes therein may be easily selected.

In order to display the chosen recipe card, it will be slipped out of the open end of the envelope adjacent the card-holding device 19 and one end portion of the card 18 may be left in the envelope 15 and the outer free end of the card 18 will be attached to the clip 20 and supported thereby when the clip maneuvered into the proper horizontal and vertical position by swinging the clip with respect to the mounting link 23 and by swing-,

card may merely be pushed into the envelope 15 without any substantial manipulation of the card being necessary because the inner end thereof is already projecting slightly into the envelope 15 and will be easily guided thereinto.

If it is desired the card 18 may be entirely removed from the envelope 15 and the card-holding device may be swung upwardly into the dotted position B shown in Fig. 2 so as to materially elevate the recipe card and make reading of the material on the card easier for taller persons. In this regard, it should be noted that the card-holding device 19 may be extended into upright condition such as the dotted position C shown in Fig. 5 wherein the clip is in aligned and extended relation with respect to the mounting link.

When the mixing of the recipe is completed, the card 18 is disconnected from the clip 20 and is slipped hack into its envelope 15. The clip 20 is then swung into overlying relation with the mounting link 23: and then the mounting link and clip are swung into the dotted position D shown in Fig. 1 whereby the card-holding device 19 is confined within small compass and within the edges of the cover 11 so as to permit the covers and 11 to be swung into the closed condition shown in Fig. 1.

It will be noted that the cards 18 have somewhat V- shaped outer ends 18a which project slightly out of the ends of the envelopes 15 to permit ready and easy gripping of the cards.

It should also be noted that because the envelopes 15 are of transparent material, the top card in each enelope will be visible through the envelope. It it is desired to use the recipe printed on the top card, the envelopes overlying this particular envelope which contains the card to be read, may he swung upwardly and then the clip 2!? may be moved upwardly and to the left and laid against these envelopes which have been swung up so as to retain them in that position. The displayed recipe card may then be viewed through the corresponding transparent envelope.

As an exarnple of this operation, with reference to Fig. 2, suppose that it is desired to read the top recipe in the envelope marked Hot Dishes. All of the envelopes thereabove entitled Meats, Cakes, etc., will be swung upwardly at their cloth bindings 17a and the clip 20 will be swung into position to bear against the envelope entitled Meats." The hot dish recipe may then be easily read.

.It shouldfurther be noted that when these envelopes have been swung up as described, a recipe card in the envelope marked Meats may also be read if it is properly oriented in the envelope.

It will be seen that l have provided. a new and improved apparatus for holding recipe cards and the like in such display positions that the cards are readily and easily read and are supported in such a position that the cards may be readily and easily detached from the cardholding device and merely slipped back into the proper envelope wherein one end of the card has been resting while the card has been in use. It should further be apparent that the recipe card holding device is adapted to elevate the card into such position as to permit the card to be readily and easily read over the top of containers and mixing bowls which may be placed in front of it and of course may be easily read by taller persons.

It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, detail, arrangement and proportion of the parts without departing from the scope of my invention which consists of the matter described herein and set forth in the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. Apparatus for holding and displaying cards and the like, comprising a pair of upright and swingably interconnected book covers and having spaced lower edges upon which the covers may stand in back to back relation for supporting each other, a plurality of card-holding envelopes lying on one of the covers, means supporting the-envelopes on the cover, said envelopes having open ends at one side of the cover, at a multiplicity of positions between the upper and lower edges thereof, a card-supporting device having a. clip attachable to the 4 edge ofa card and also having a mounting link swingably connected to the cover adjacent the open ends of the envelopes and also swingably connected with the'clip to permit horizontal and vertical adjustment of the clip for supporting the cards projecting out of the open ends of the envelopes.

2. The invention set forth in claim 1 wherein said clip comprises an elongated element swingably connected at one end to the mounting link and having a plurality of spaced tines at the other end for engaging and gripping the card therebetween.

3. Apparatus for holding and displaying cards and the like, comprising a pair of upright and swingably interconnected book covers having spaced lower edges upon which the covers may stand in back to back relation for supporting each other, a plurality of card-holding pockets lying on one of the covers, means supporting and positioning the pockets on the cover at a multiplicity of positions between the upper and lower edges thereof, said pockets having open ends at one side of the cover, a card-supporting device having attaching means releasably connectible with the edge of a card, and said device also having vertically and horizontally adjustable mounting means supporting the attaching means adjacent the open ends of the pockets for adjustment to a multiplicity of positions for supporting the cards projecting out of the pockets.

Apparatus for holding and displaying cards and the like, comprising a pair of book covers swingably interconnected at their upper edges and adapted to stand on their lower edges in back to back relation for supporting each other, a plurality of card-holding pockets lying on one of the covers, means supporting the pockets on the cover, said pockets having open ends at one side'of the cover, a card-supporting device having a clip adjacent the open ends of the pockets and spaced horizontally inwardly from the cover for engaging a card projecting from a pocket, said device also having horizontally adjustable mountingmeans connected with the cover and supporting the clip whereby to permit adjustment of the clip into and out of the peripheral confines of the cover.

5. Apparatus for holding and displaying cards and the like, comprising a pair of book covers swingably interconnected at their upper edges and adapted to stand on their lower edges in back to back relation for supporting each other, means supported by the covers for removably carrying a number of cards in a plurality of portions between the upper and lower cdegs of the cover, said means permitting individual cards to he slipped outwardly adjacent one side of the cover to be individually displayed, a card-supporting device having a clip attachable to the edge of a card and also having a mounting link swingably connected to one of the covers between the upper and lower edges thereof and said link also being swingably connected with the clip to permit the clip to be adjusted in a horizontal and vertical directions and to be swung back into overlying relation with the mounting link and within the edges of the cover, whereby the clip maybe moved outwardly and upwardly from the covers for supporting a card, and may be confined within the edges of the covers when the covers are swung to closed position.
