STATEMENT ANI) BALANCE BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1911.
Application led February 9, 1909. Serial No. 476,926.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LEMERT C. VAN VOOR- I-rrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Statement and Balance Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in loose leaves and index sheets for loose leaf binders, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings-Figure l is a plan view of the loose leaf, Fig. 2 isa perspective view of the index sheet, a portion of the covering being removed at one end, Fig. 3 is an edge view of a portion of the index sheet and a portion of the loose leaf, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of the improvement.
The embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings consists of a plurality of loose leaves or sections A, and a plurality of index sheets B, a loose leaf being superimposed on each index sheet. Each index sheet consists of two portions b and b2 connected by a cover bn'of flexible material, as for instance cloth, and one of said portions?) consists of superimposed strips bo and o* provided near each end with slotted perforations b, and spaced apart at their ends by a transverse strip Z215, so that theportion is thicker at its ends than at its center. The other portion b2 consists of a plurality of superimposed sheets Z212, 513 of still' sheet material, and the sheets are separated at their ends by transverse spacing strips 791, and the two portions are connected by the covering Z211 of fabric material, the arrangement being such that the portion b is spaced apart from the portion b2, and flexibly connected thereto by the cover as at b3. The sheet 613 is also provided with the usual index tag 66.
The loose leaf comprises a plurality of statement sheets, a, which are superimposed upon each other in underlapping relation, one edge of the statements being connected by a tape a, the tape and the statements being provided with slotted perforations a2, which are adapted to register with the perforations o of the portion b when the loose leaves are .superimposed thereon. Each of the statement sheets consists of a central portion as which is ruled and headed in the form of a statement, a balance coupon a5 ruled. and headed to receive a balance, and a reconcilement coupon printed as shown at a6, the balance coupon being separated from the central portion by a line of perforations al, and the statement proper being separated from the reconcilement coupon by a line of perforations au, the said lines of perforation extending the full length of the sheet as shown in Fig. l. By meansl of the above described lines of perforation, the balance coupon and the statement proper, that is portions 125 and a3 may be separated from the reconcilement coupon a6.
The sheets forming the loose leaf as before stated are arranged in superimposed and underlapping relation, the lowermost sheet Vbeing at the top of the loose leaf and the uppermost sheet being at the bottom. Each of the sheets is provided at its top with the name of a depositor as shown at a7 and the sheets are so arranged that all names thereon are always visible as shown in Fig. 1. The numeral designating the ledger page upon which the account of the depositor whose nameappears on the statement is found, follows the name as at a8, and since some of the pages of the ledger will bear more than one account the numerals a8 will be repeated. The statements are arranged beforeb-inding, .with the names alphabetically and a colored blank sheet a is arranged between the sheets bearing series of names commencing with one letter of the alphabet and the series commencing with another letter.
It will be observed that by arranging the sheets in superimposed underlapping relation, the loose leaf is thin at its ends and thick at its center, and since the index sheet is thin at its center and thick at its ends, each index sheet and its corresponding loose leaf when placed together will form a section having approximately parallel upper and lower faces.
As shown in Fig. l, the statements proper are ruled with a plurality of parallel horizontal lines al which are crossed at spaced intervals by vertical lines a, a series of vertical columns being thus formed. The first column is headed Date, the next four are each yheaded Checks, the sixth column is headed Checks and Balance the word Balance being arranged beneath the word Checks, the seventh column is headed above the ruling Debit and at the top of the column it is headed Total checks. The eighth and ninth columns are headed above the ruling Credit, and at the top of the columns Deposit-s.7 The tenth column is headed Memo7 The statement coupon shown to the right of the line of perforation am. in Fig. l is divided into three vertical columns, the first one of which is arranged beneath the heading Memor and bears a series of numerals arranged one above the other and running consecutively from above downward from l to 31, and the second and third columns are headed Balance.
Statements arranged in the manner shown, serve as a bank balance book or tellers record, from the first to the last of the month, after which the statements are taken from the book and delivered ,to the customers with their canceled vouchers. The numbers or numerals on the statements under the column headed Date designate the days of the month, and the colored sheets which divide the various series of names on the loose leaf are for assistance to the teller or other oiiicers in referring to the various accounts.
It will be understood that the loose leaves and the index sheets are intended to be bound in book form in a loose binder, and each loose leaf and its index sheet forms al book section having substantially parallel faces, the thick ends of the index sheet compensating for the thin ends of the loose leaf.
I claim:
l. A book of the class described composed of a plurality of loose leaves or sections, each leaf comprising a plurality of sheets superimposed in underlapping relation, whereby to expose a portion of the top of each sheet, said portion bearing a name and a number, the sheets being arranged in series, each series comprising the names commencing with one let-ter of the alphabet, and a sheet of a contrasting color between the series, said first named sheets being each partially divided into three portions, the central portion being headed for a statement, the outer port-ion being headed for a balance sheet, and the inner portion bearing a printed notice, each of said sheets being provided with a score line near its bound edge for the purpose set forth.
2. A book of the class described, composed of a plurality of loose leaves or sections, each leaf comprising a plurality of sheets, superimposed in underlapping relation, whereby to expose a portion of the top of each sheet, said portion bea-ring a. name and a number, the sheets being arranged in series, each series comprising the names commencing with one letter of the alphabet, and a sheet of a contrasting color between the series, each of said before named sheets being provided with a score line near its bound edge for the purpose set forth.
3. A book of the class described, composed of a plurality of loose leaves or sections, each leaf comprising a plurality of sheets of equal size and superimposed in underlapping relation whereby to expose a portion of the top of each sheet, said portion being provided with a name and number, the sheets being arranged in series, each series comprising the names commencing with the same letter of the alphabet and a sheet of contrasting color between the series, each of said named sheets being provided with a score line at its inner bound edge for the purpose set forth.
4. A book of the class described, composed of a plurality of loose leaves or sections, each leaf comprising a. plurality of sheets superimposed in underlapping relation, whereby to expose al portion of the top of each sheet, said portion bearing a name and number, the sheets being arranged in series, each series comprising the names commencing with the same character, and a sheet of a contrasting color between the series.
5. An index sheet comprising superimposed sheets, a strip arranged between the sheets at each end thereof, the centers of the said sheets beingV in contact, strips provided with slotted perforations whereby they may be bound spaced apart from one side of the sheets, and a flexible cover for the sheets and the strips and connecting the sheets with the said strips.
