UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY MEYER, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO HERMAN RIEDEL, HERMAN GROSSER, AND CHARLES NEYNABER, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED RECORD,
DIARY, AND LEDGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,670, dated August 30, 1892. Application filed April 30, 1892. Serial No. 431,296. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Oombined Record, Diary, and Ledger, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in books, and combines 10 a general record, a diary, a ledger, and indexleaves, including the months and days of the week and alphabetical and numerical indices, in addition, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide a book of the character set forth adapted for office and domestic use wherein various forms of memoranda, accounts, and general records may be kept, and wherein is also provided means for facilitating letter-writing, which, in conjunction with the other features set forth, will be greatly facilitated and aided.
With this object in view the invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and
combination of the several parts hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of the improved book shown open and illustrating the arrangement of the parts thereof. Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing a portion of the book removed. Fig. 3 is a section on the line a." 00, Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
5 Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a book having a suitable back 2, and therein is bound a number of leaves 3, in which every alternate leaf is scored before binding and then removed after binding to 40 provide attaching-stubs 4, to which suitable papers, memoranda, and the like may be attached when desired. To the left of the book the leaves are formed with a numerical index, as at 5, running from 1" to 31 and indieative of the number of days in a month. This index runs from the interior of the book toward the back of the same, and succeeding the said index seven leaves have imprinted thereon the days of the week, as at 6, in the form of an index. On the opposite side of the center of the book twelve leaves have imprinted thereon in index form the months of the year, as at 7, and succeeding the latter is an alphabetical index, as at 8, which extends from the interior of the book toward the adjacent-back of the same. Each of the indices,
as set forth, runs from the interior of the book toward the back of the same, in order that they may be more readily manipulated without turning the leaves or disturbing the cen- 6o tral arrangement of the parts of thebook. In the central portion of the book is bound a record, as at 9, and the ledger, as at 10, which are secured to strips 11 and also by the sewing of the several parts. Between the record and ledger are strips 12, which haveatape or cord 13, secured between the same and the ends projecting a suitable distance from the ends of the book, and this tape or cord acts as additional binding and securement of the parts set forth. Between the strips 12 is removably secured a letter-writing blotter 14, over which the said tape or cord 13 is secured in detachable position to thereby provide for a substitution of one blotter for another when 7 5 occasion requires.
In placing the index denoting the days of the month in the form of numerals, as at 5, along the left side of the book, as set forth, and having the week-days, seven in number, placed as the inner index on the same side it will be seen that atotal of thirty-eight leaves is provided. On the right half or center of the book first appears an index set apart to the twelve months of the year, followed by an alphabetical index containing twenty-six leaves and making a total of thirty-eight leaves on this side of the book, and thereby providing for the central binding or location of the record, ledger, and blotter exactly in go the center of the book with the accessible data in the varied forms on each side of the same, which can be readily employed from time to time to assist the memory as to information or facts desired. In having this central di- 5 vision it is plainly seen that a good deal of paper is saved, as instead of cutting all of the indices on one side or in one direction, which would diminish the pages of the book to a great extent and mutilate the same be yond convenient usage, the indices are arranged on opposite sides, as set forth, with the advantages which are self-evident and apparent.
It will be observed that the book set forth is a stub or scrap book for the preservation of important correspondence, memorada, or
sides in the formation of the double index ar-' ranged on opposite sides of the book independent of the other features set forth.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a bookof the character set forth, the combination of the double index on each side of the center of the same and running in opposite directions and centrally-situated leaves between said indices forming a record, a ledger, and a letter-writing blotter, substantially as described.
2. In a book of the character set forth, the combination of the double indices on opposite sides of the center thereof and a letter-writing blotter removably mounted between said indices, substantially as described.
3. In a book of the character set forth, the combination of the leaves provided with double indices on opposite sides thereof and stub-strips between said leaves, substantially as described.
4. In a book of the character set forth, the combination of the double indices on opposite sides of the center of the book and running in two directions, a ledger-section between said indices, a record adjacent to said ledgersection, and aletter-writing blotter removably secured between said record and ledger, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' HENRY MEYER. Witnesses:
GEORGE O. KOENIG, B. LOHMULLER.
