TEMPORARY BINDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,637, dated June 8, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SELDEN R. HoPKINs, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tempo rary Binders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the aceom pan ying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved book opened and ready for use, and Fig. 2 is a section of the same upon line 00 0c of Fig. 1.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The design of my invention is to lessen the time and labor necessary for keeping accounts; and it consists, principally, in a book having permanent indexed divisions, each of which is provided with detachable sheets or leaves for writing purposes, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

It consists, further, in a book having permanent indexed divisions which contain billheads and stubs that are detachable, and when used may be replaced, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.

It consists, finally, in the peculiar construction of the book and the means employed for securing in position the detachable leaves or sheets of paper, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

In the annexed drawings, A and A represent the covers of my book, which are connected by a stiff back, B,in the usual manner. Between the covers A and A are placed twenty-six (or less) double sheets of card-board or other like material, C, which sheets, at their double ends, are secured to or upon the back B in such manner as to leave between their inner faces a space corresponding to the quantity of paper that each is to contain.

The outer ends of the doubled sheets 0, which form sections or divisions of the book,

are cut away and lettered, as seen in Fig. 1,

each section from front to rear having the letter of the alphabet which corresponds in number of such section from the front.

Between the folds of each section or division 0 are placed doubled sheets of paper D, which, preferably, have less width andlength than said folds, and are placed one within the other, so that a rubber band, E, passed around the back B and between the contiguous pages of the inner sheet, shall hold said sheets firmly in place, while permitting each to be turned freely like the leaves of a book. The principal use to which this book is to be applied is for making itemized statements or bills in case of accounts which are to be presented at stated periods; and for this purpose each sheet D is properly headed and ruled, and is separated from a 1.)roperly-printed stub, D, by means of a line of perforations, so that when filled up said bill may be detached therefrom.

In making up accounts the items are posted upon the sheet D, instead of being carried to an ordinary ledger, and at any time and without the labor of making such exhibit from the regular books an itemized account may be rendered by simply detaching said sheet, which, when so detached, forms a bill ready for presentation to a customer.

In addition to the use named the book may be employed for temporarily binding legal or other documents, the same being thus arranged in a convenient form for reference.

When the leaves D in either section have become exhausted the stubs D may be removed and filed away, and fresh leaves placed in position in a moments time and with little trouble. 7

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s 1. A book having permanent indexed divisions, each of which is provided with detachable sheets for writing purposes, that are secured in place by bands passing through their folds, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. A book having permanent indexed divisions, which eaoh contain sheets of billheads and stubs that are secured in place by bands passing through their folds, and are separable from each other and readily detachable from said divisions, substantially as and for the purpose shown.

3. The hereinbefore-described book, consisting of the covers A and A, back 13, indexed 10 sections or divisions O, detachable sheets D,

and bands E, passing through the folds of the sheets, all combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
