y anatra EDVJIN P. BENSON, F NEVI YR-K, N. Y.
Application filed January 24, 1921. Serial No. 439,335.
To all 'io/0m t may concern:
Be it known that l, EDWIN P. BnNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county New York and State of New York, have invented certain neu7 and useful improvements in Stub Bindings and Envelopes for Check Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful system of arranging for the attachment to usual covers, of a collection of bank checks or the like, where a single stub-sheet serves for a. plurality of checks arranged in vertical column and with a vertical edge of each eX- tending from the edge of the corresponding stub-sheet. Heretofore the stubs of such check-sheets have been secured between the usual pasteboard covers by wiring through the fabric hinge which ordinarily connects the covers. That is to say, the inner vertical edges of the stubsheets were wired, With the result that it was diiiicult to hold the book open. Furthermore, these stubsheets have been provided on the front face with indicia pertaining to checks drawn, and have usually been ruled on the back for indicia pertaining to deposits, &c.` With the old method of binding it has been very 'difcult to thus utilize theback of the stub,
because of the diliiculty of holding back the stubs from which the check-sheets had been detached. l
According to my invention l propose y to secure the stubs to one cover or backing along the upper horizontal edge, and utilize a part of each stub-sheet for indicia of deposits, &c., and the remainder of each stub-sheet, divided into sections corresponding in number to the number of checks attached to the particular sheet, for indicia pertaining to those several checks. By reason of the fact v that the stubs are secured to the back or cover at the upper horizontal edge, there is no difliculty in opening the book to lie flat, and there is no occasion for turning back the stubs in order to write on the back of them, because provision is made for deposit indicia on the front; and even if it were desired to write on the back of the stubs, it is easier to turn them back because they are held along an edge of least length. Furthermore, by wiring the sheets at the upper horizontal edge of the stubs I effect a considerable saving of paper. J
l also contemplate utilizing in connection with the arrangement above referred to, a
permanent cover or envelope, in addition to tne main covers or backing, which when the checks have Aall been detached will enfold the remaining collection of stubs for future reference or use, and l' propose that this permanent envelope shall be wired to the stubs by the .same wiring'wliich unites them to the ordinary back or cover of the complete book. l also propose that this permanent envelope shall carry the necessary indicia referring to the banken which the formerly attached checks were drawn, with numbers dates, &c. a
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less' broad than those stated above. together with the advantages inherent, will be in part obvious and in part specifically referred to in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts, and applications of principles constituting the invention; and 'V the scope of protection contemplated Will appear from the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, which are to'be taken as part of this specification, and f in which l have shown merely a preferred form of embodiment of invention,
Figure l is a plan view of a check-book made up in accordance with my invention andwith the parts opened up;
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same;
Figure 3 is a perspective vie-w illustrating the stubs after the checks have all been detached and the main cover or covers out 0H; Figure 4 is a perspective view' of the subject-matter of Figure 3 with one fold of the permanent envelope turned down; and
Figure 5 is a similar view showing the envelope closed.
Referring to the numerals on the. drawings, I sho-w at 6 one of the usual main covers of a check-book and at 7 the other main cover or backing. These may be united by hinge 8 of cloth or the like. Of course it will be understood that I may use only one main cover or backing, for instance, the backing 7, omitting the cover 6 and the hinge 8. ln any case, a collection or stack of stubs 9 is to be secured to the backing 7, and each stub will have attached thereto a plurality of checks l0, in vertical column as shown in Figure l, these checks being separable from their corresponding stub, and from each other along weakened lines l1, in the usual way. Each stub preferably has a part, for instance, the upper part thereof,
provided with the necessary ruling and indicia for the entry of facts and data relating to deposits, and another part, for instance,
the lower part thereof, on which will beV carried rulings and indicia relating to the several checks attached' to the particular stub, and to balances, &c. The collection or stack of stubs may be secured tothe backing V7 as by means of sewing or wiring 12, which unites `the upper vhorizontal edges of the stubs tothe upper horizontal edge portion Orale backinb 7.
' lt desired., frnay' also provide an envelope for the stubs,"which may .be of paper or other material' and comprising' aback 14 to lie underneath the collection of stubs, 'inte 'gral endv folds 15 and 16 to go over the horizontaljedges of the stack1 and cover folds landld to-gol over the front of the stack.,y
cover told 18 having an aperture or eyelet 19 for, engagement with a prong fastener 2O carried 'by the other cover fold. The wiring or y inain backing is cut olf along a line correspondingwith the righthand yedge ot the stack or ofthe envelope inlligure 1;y and it the other main cover 6 and 8 are also present, rthese are also removed by` cutting through thehinge along the line ot the letthand 'edge oli the, staclrin Figure- 1. Thereupon, the envelope lmay be closed about theI stubs as shown inFigures 3, 4: and 5.v Preteral'ily, the envelope will carry indicia relating to the contained stubs, as tor/instance the `name o 'l' t-he bank on which drawn, the inclusive numbers of the checks,v and the inclu' siveV dates thereof, and if desired also vthe name ot the drawer of the checks Such 1n,- dicia maybe conveniently be carried on one otthe-` end-fold portions 15 or 16, so that the envelopes may be iled away on edge with' the indiciaexposed.
Until such time as the checks have ll been `used up, the cover `folds 17 and 18ct' the envelopc may lie, between the main backing@ land the'bottomv of the staclnof stubss being bent towards each other along the lines QI-"QZofllTioure 1. Or'to make a more si htly article, these ,two folds 17 andA 18 nw be folded upon themselves along the li Ql-Q-i and then toldedupon each other and upon the backing' ,7, ralong lines corre .spending with the horizontal edges of the book; in which case n.0 portions of the en` velope will proyect appreciably beyond the horizontal edges of the book. l
Willi/ile l have spoken of bankcheclzs in pan lticular, it is to be understood that the in vention is equally. applicable in .connection with other forms, such as draiits, receipts, or
(thereto, lfastening means passing throu h the like, andl intend no limitation whatever by the use;` of the word checks or by re- .ierring to indicia of deposits, zc,V
