April 21, 1964 W.'J. LUTWACK PORTFOLIO MADE OF PAPER Filed June 1, 1962 United States Patent 3,129,872 PGRTFGLIO MADE OF PAPER Wilton J. Lutwack, 7 01 Seneca St., Buffalo, N.Y. Filed June 1, 1962, Ser. No. 199,413 6 Claims. (Cl. 229-72) This invention relates to a portfolio for holding papers, pads and the like and more particularly to such a portfolio made of paper so as to be low in cost.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a low cost, lightweight, compact and durable portfolio particularly adapted for commercial use.
Another important object is to provide such a portfolio which not only avoids the likelihood of loss of papers while being carried, but also avoids the danger of the contents being displaced from the pockets when the portfolio is opened and closed in use.
Another important object is to make the portfolio of a single printed diecut sheet of high quality paper having high tear and a burst strength and minimum hygroscopicity and on which can be printed school insignia or advertisements as well as blank forms adapted for use in setting out class schedules and other data.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a portfolio having four large pockets and in which two of these pockets are enclosed at three slides so as to provide a high degree of security for the contents whereas the other two are essetnially secured at only two sides so as to be more readily accessible.
Another object is to provide such a portfolio in which at least the major portion of the edge forming the mouth of each envelope faces the hinge connecting the back and front panels of the portfolio, so that this hinge acts as a barrier against the loss of contents from the pockets when the portfolio is closed.
Another object is to provide such a portfolio which can be made with production printing, laminating, diecutting, scoring, gluing, folding and sealing equipment so as to avoid any substantial amount of hand labor in making the portfolios.
Another object is to provide such a portfolio having parts glued together and in which the glue is applied to one side only of the paper from which the portfolio is made.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the reverse side of a diecut paper blank showing the score lines along which the blank is to be folded and also showing the areas to which glue is applied for sealing the portfolio as a part of the fold- FIG. 2 is a plan view of a completed portfolio, viewed from the inside thereof;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on line 3-3, FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on line 44, FIG. 2.
To provide a low cost portfolio, an important feature of the invention is that it is made from a single sheet of paper which is diecut to form the blank illustrated in FIG. 1 and is also provided with score lines as hereinafter described to facilitate folding the blank into the form of a portfolio. The paper sheet 10 is preferably of high quality paper having high tear and burst strength with minimum hygroscopicity and there can be imprinted thereon any desired ornamentation or useful blanks or data (not shown). The blank sheet 10 has five score lines 11, 12, 13, 14, and defining the hinged front and rear panels of the portfolio and also flaps which are folded and glued together in such manner as to form the four separate pockets which feature the present invention. The
score line 11 extends throughout the center of the blank and defines with the score lines 12, 13, 14 the front panel 16 of the portfolio. This center line 11 with the score lines 12, 13, 15 defines the rear panel 18 of the portfolio.
The score line 12 also defines an inner pocket forming flap 19, the side edges 20 of which form continuations of the score lines 14 and 15 and this inner pocket forming flap having a deep center recess 21 in line with the center score line 11 and extending from the outer end edge 22 of the inner pocket forming flap 19 to a point close to but preferably short of the score line 12.
The width of the recess 21 is such as to permit ready access to the side edges of this recess, which edges form the mouths of the inner pockets of the completed portfolio and the distance between the score line 12 and the outer end edge 22 of this inner pocket forming flap 19 is slightly less than the length of the cover panels 16 and 18, that is, the distance from the score line 12 to the score line 13.
The score line 13 also defines an outer pocket forming flap 25 the side edges 26 of which form continuations of the score lines 14 and 15 and this outer pocket forming flap having a deep center recess 28 in line with the center score line 11 and extending from the outer edge 29 of the outer pocket forming flap 25 to a point close to but preferably short of the score line 13.
The Width of the recess 28 is preferably substantially greater than the width of the recess 21 and the distance between the score line 13 and the outer end edge line 29 of the outer pocket forming flap is substantially less than the corresponding dimension of the pocket forming flap 19.
Each score line 14, 15 also defines a narrow flap 30 which preferably extends substantially the full length of these score lines and is provided on the reverse side of the sheet of paper 10 with a layer 31 of glue. Each of these narrow flaps 30 is also preferably notched from its outer longitudinal edge, as indicated at 32, this notch having one edge 33 which comes into alinement with the outer end edge 29 of the outer pocket forming flap when the portfolio is folded.
Either of the pocket forming flaps 19 or 25 can be provided with a slit 35 used for the insertion of accessory equipment, such as the back of a pad 36. This slit is shown as being in one side of the inner pocket forming flap 19 close to the fold line 12 and as having rounding edges 38 to retard any action of the supported pad 36 or the like in sawing beyond the end of this slit.
The blank as above described is folded into the portfolio by first folding the inner pocket forming flap 19 along the fold line 12 into face-to-face relation with reverse sides of the panels 16 and 18. The outer pocket forming flap 25 is then folded along the fold line 13 into face-to-face relation with the inner pocket forming flap 19. The glued narrow flaps 30 are then folded along the fold lines 14, 15 into face-to-face relation with both the inner pocket forming flap 19 and the outer pocket forming flap 25 and the layer 31 of glue is adhered thereto.
It will be noted that in completed portfolio the inner pockets 40 formed by the inner pocket forming flap 19 have mouths extending close to and substantially the full length of the hinge of the portfolio, the opposite ends of these mouths being formed by the extremities of the notches 21 and 28 of the inner and outer pocket forming flaps 19 and 25 respectively. It will be noted that any papers in these pockets cannot be lost with the portfolio folded along the hinge line 11 because the hinged por tions of the panels 16 and 18 form covers for these mouths. It will further be noted that the pockets 41 formed by the outer pocket forming flap 25 are more readily accessible and hence can be used for more casual purposes.
It will also be seen that a pad 36 or the like can have its back slipped into the slit 35 so that the pad is retained in position, and that with the slit 35 located in the inner pocket forming-flap 19 close to the fold line 12 the lower end of this pad can be contained within the corresponding outer pocket 41.
It will also be seen that the corner of each other pocket 41 formed by the edge 29 is reinforced by the notches 32 which provide a great thickness of paper in this point.
From the 'foregoing it will be seen that a four pocket, portfolio is made with minimum Waste of paper as will be apparent from an inspection of the blank, FIG. 1, While at the same time having four full size pockets, the two inner tones of which are secure in that each has three closed sides and its mouth close to the hinge 11, while the two outer pockets are more accessible for casual notes, and also protect the pad 36 hung in the slit 35.
I claim:
