UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
AN SON O. KITTREDGE, OF TENAFLY, NEWV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO ACCOUNT, AUDIT & ASSURANCE COMPANY, LIMITED, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DETACHABLE GROUP OF LEAV E S FOR SECTIONAL BO OKS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 676,138, dated June 1 1, 1901.
Application filed August 18, 1899. Serial No. 727.714. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANSON O. KITTREDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tenafly, county of Bergen, State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Groups of Leaves for Sectional Books, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
The object of the present invention is to furnish an improved construction for payrolls, progressive ledgers, balance-sheet ledgers, and analogous records in which a series of leaves is used successively in conjunction with a list of permanent data. In the case of a pay-roll such permanent data consists of a list of names and wages, and different leaves are applied in succession to such list to record the time of the workmen and amounts due to them upon successive dates. The present invention furnishes a means of preparing such a conjoint record and removing not only the leaves which are successively used, but also the slip bearing the permanent data to form with the leaves a permanent record. T
My construction comprises a foundationsheet, a group of folded leavessecure'd detachably thereto, a thickening-pad secured upon the margin of such sheet adjacent to the free edges of the leaves, and a detachable slip upon the surface of the thickener. The list of names or permanent data is inscribed upon such detachable slip, and the detachable slip and the group of leaves may with this construction both be renewed at pleasure or removed for preservation. The thickening-pad or thickener is made of the same thickness as the group of folded leaves, and the removable facing-slip affords the means of renewing the Writing-surface to alter the date whenever required and to permit the detachment of the facing-slip when it is desired to preserve the sameto form a conjoint record with the group of filled leaves.
A considerable number of such foundationsheets with attached pads and leaf-groups may be adapted for securing in a suitable binder to format larger book by extending a flexible shank from the edge of the sheet next the leaf-hinges and thickening such shank in agreement with the leaves and pad. The thickened shanks may then be clamped to gether by any suitable means and form a volume of uniform thickness throughout.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a single book-section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the foundation-sheet, with pad I; and thickener t. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the under side of the detachable facing-slip; Fig. at, a perspective View of the group of hinge-leaves and their back plate, and Fig. 5 shows in perspective five sections secured in the binder.
a designates the foundation-sheet, which may be made of stiff paper, millboard, thin metal, or other suitable material. The left margin of such sheet is shown provided with a thickening-pad 17, secured upon the foundation-sheet by cement or other suitable means. The pad is provided with four di agonal slits c to engage the corners of a back plate f, attached to a facing-slip 1). (Shown in Fig. 3.) The unthickened portion of the sheet is shown in Fig. 2 provided with four diagonal slits c to engage the corners of the back piece f, attached to the group of leaves (1. leaves united by stitches e to form a hinge, and the back piece f is attached to the rear leaf ofthe group, and the corners of such back piece are adapted to fit'in the slits c to hold the group detachably upon the sheet. The slits are so arranged that the back piece The group is shown with the folds of the i holds the free edges of the leaves in proximity to the slip b. Fig. 1 shows the back piece f lying between the group of leaves and the foundation-sheet a, with the corners of such back piece projected through the sheet, as when fitted into the slits c. This figure also shows the back platef between the pad I) and the slip b".
Fig. 1 shows a shank 7t formed by extending the right-hand end of the sheeto adjacent to the hinge of the leaves. The shank is provided with a thickenert' of the same height as the pad Z7 and group of leaves at, and such shank adapts the structure to form a book unit or section for binding in a volume with similar sections. The shank-thickener t is made of pasteboard, wood, or other used for book-sections it is desirable to thicken rates it a little way from the hinge of the leaves, and the shank is thus united to the sheet by a flexible joint, which permits the sections to turn in the volume when the shanks are clamped together. Fig. shows agroup of five such units or sections connected together by the so-called R. & B. loose-leaf-' ledger clamp and provided with a blank sheet J upon the rear side to cover the leaves and pad upon the last section. The sections may also be held together by any postbinder. Such construction permits sections to be added successively and preserved together for future reference, and any binder adapted to clamp the shanks is obviously suitable for such purpose. The group of leaves may be hinged to the foundation-sheet by any suitable fasteners.
Transverse lines are shown ruled upon the surface of the pad and leaves in Fig. 3, and such lines are necessary in such constructions to indicate the corresponding spaces to be used in conjunction upon the pad and upon the leaves. To hold such lines in coincidence, itis desirable that the group of leaves should be held securely upon the foundatio'n-shect while in use.
Fig. 3 shows a ledger in which each section is adapted to contain a certain number of accounts for one year,'. and the book is open at the end of one section.
It is obvious that the group of leaves could be used in conjunction with a single slip upon the unthickened -margin of the foundation.- sheet if such slip and leaves were ruled in correspondence; but Where the structure is the edge of the leaf to make the book of even thickness throughout. For such use the foiln'd'ationsheetis therefore thickened upon two opposite margins, and the group of leaves has its hinge secured to the sheet between the thickened margins. and adjacent to the I bend between the leaf-hinges and the thick-- ened shank, and the foundation-sheet thus has a flexible joint on the shank, while the leaves in the group are hinged together and turn independently of such joint.
My invention greatly facilitates the preparing of a joint record and the preservation of the same in a convenient form, as the group of folded leaves is readily detached from the foundation-sheet when they have been filled with inscriptions, and the facing-slips b similarly detached from the pad b. Both can then for such narrow leaves, such section comprising the foundation-sheet a with shank h at one edge, a group of folded leaves 61 secured to the sheetwith the fold adjacent to the shank h, and thickeners i and I) attached to both margins of the sheet to compensate for the group of narrow leaves, substantially as herein set forth.
2. In a book having groups of detachable narrow leaves and wide leaves thickened at the margin to compensate for such narrow leaves, the combination of a series of sections comprising each a foundation-sheet at having the shank h with thickener t', a clamp for securing the thickened shanks together, a group of folded leaves 01 secured to the sheet with the fold adjacent to the shank h, and the thickener 1) upon the margin of the sheet a. to compensatefor the group of leaves (1, such thickener having a detachable slip upon its surface, as and for the purpose set forth.
In a book having groups of detachable narrow leaves and wide leaves thickened at the margin to compensate for such narrow leaves, the combination of a series of sections comprising each a foundation-sheet a having the shank h with thethickener i thereon, a clamp for securing the thickened shanks together, a group of folded leaves (1 secured to the sheet with a space forming a flexible shank between their fold and the thickener 1), and the sheet having the thickener 19 upon the margin of the sheet to compensate for the group of leaves 01-, with a detachable slip upon such thickener, whereby the sections may be clamped together by their shanks and turned freely thereon, and the folded leaves and detachable slips be renewed or removed at pleasure.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set
