NlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VFILLIAM ll. PARDEE, OF COLUMBIA, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
DUPLlCATlNG-TABLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,072, dated February 19, 1889.
Application filed May 17, 1888. Serial No. 274,146. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM ll. PARDEE, of Columbia, in the county of Brown and Ter ritory of Dakota, have invented a new and 1 Improved Duplicating-Tablet, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part i thereof, in which Figure l is a plan view of myimproved du- 9 plicating-tablet. Fig. 2 is a plan view represen ting the leaves turned back to more clearly a show the construction. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, and Fig. i is a perspective view with parts broken away.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient duplicating-tablet for the use of salesmen and others desiring to keep a record of the checks made out for various sales, or for any use where it is necessary to preserve an exact duplicate of a check or other memorandum.
My invention consists in the combination of two books arranged upon a common back or tablet, with the leaves of the two books arranged in alternation, and with astrip of carbon-paper secured to the tablet-hack and adapted to be introduced between the sheets as required.
In the back A, which may be of pasteboard or other suitable material, are inserted two pairs of tubes, B 13 C C, of a length about equal to the thickness of the tablets to be applied to the back A.
Upon the tubes 0 C is placed a book, D, or a series of perforated sheets, which may 01 may not be connected together in book form, and upon the tubesB B is placed a book, D, or a number of perforated sheets, the sheets of the book D being arranged in alternation with the sheets of the book D. The books D D are fastened to the back A by strings a,
which pass through the tubes B B C O, and are tied or otherwise fastened. One of the books may be formed of blank leaves and the other of leaves printed to adapt them to a particular purpose.
To the edge of the back A is clamped a sheet, E, of carbon-paper by means of a U- shaped strip, F, of spring metal, the said strip being arranged for ready application to the back A and carbon-paper E whenever it is desired to renew the carbon-paper.
To use my improved tablet, one of the leaves of the book D is lifted, and the carbon-paper E is folded over upon the leaf of the book D, when the leaf of the book D is laid down upon the carbon-paper, and the said leaf is written on by means of a pencil in the usual way. Through the medium of the carbon-paper E the writing will be duplicated upon the first leaf of the book D. In this manner the leaves are used one after the other until the books are exhausted, when new books and new carbon-paper may be applied to the back A in the manner already described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as n ew and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a duplieating-tablet, the combination, with a back, of two books secured to the back by independent fastenings, with their leaves alternating with each other and a carbonpaper secured to the back and adapted to be folded in between the leaves of the said books, substantial] y as described.
2. In a duplicating-tablet, the combination of the back A, provided with the tubes B B C C, the books D Don the said tubes, the strings a, passing through said tubes, and the carbon-paper E, secured to the back, substantially as described.
3. In a duplicating-tablet, the combination of the backA, provided with the tubes B B C C, the strings a, the carbon-paper E, and the carbon-paper fastener F, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM H. PARDEE.
