NOTE-BOOK COVER AND HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1 1, 1911.
Application filed May 18, 1910. Serial No. 562,112.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROYAL PORTER SI-IAPRO, citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Note-Book Cover and Holder, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to constructand use the same.
This invention relates to a note book, and its object is to provide means whereby the book may be-supported in a convenient position for reading the notes contained therein when they are being transcribed.
An object of the invention is to produce a support which will not increase the cost of the book to the user, but which is efficient and convenient and which does not increase the bulk of the book.
In the drawings in which the same numeral of reference is applied to the same portion throughout the several views, Figure 1 is an edge elevation of a book having the support applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the book in position ready to be transcribed.
The numeral 1 represents the leaves of the book which are secured to the binding 2 and covers 3 and 4- in the usual manner, said covers being of stiff card-board. Secured. to the free end of the cover 4 is a similar piece of stiff card-board 5, substantially the same in size as the cover 4. A hinge (3 permits this card 5 to be opened into the position shown in Fig. 2, when it is desired to stand the book in a position ready to have the notes transcribed. This piece 5 has a projection '7 secured thereto across its free end, said projection forming the means whereby the book is held in the position shown in Fig. 2. It will be clear that the pages may be turned and read from either side by simply turning the book, as may be desired, the base holding the covers in the position shown in Fig. 2 either way. The projection 7 at the other end of the base piece 5 lies substantially in the plane of said base piece in order that the base may be folded within the book so that it is out of the way when not in use.
Vi/hen the book is not in use, the base is simply folded in and does not occupy any more space than an ordinary book. The advantage of this form of holder is that it is inexpensive and will not increase the cost of the book to the user, while at the same time affording an efficient book stand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. In a note book, a book having stiff covers, a stiff base substantially the same in size as one of said covers and hinged thereto at the outer end thereof, said base being short enough to be folded within the book and having means at its movable end to secure the other cover thereto, substantially as described.
2. In a' note book, a book having stiff covers bound thereto, a base hinged across the outer end of'one of said covers, said base being enough shorter than said cover to be folded within the book and adapted to be turned through an arc of about 300, and means at the outer end of said base to hold the outer end of the other cover to support the book, said means lying substantially in the plane of said base so that the base may be folded within the book, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 23 day of April A. D. 1910,
in the presence of the two subscribed wit nesses.
