To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES COLIN MONT- GOMERIE, subject of the King of England, residing at 9 WValpole Gardens, Twickenham, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portfolios, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to those portfolios employed as a temporary binding for newspapers, magazines and for other like purposes, and has for its object certain improvements therein designed to permit of such portfolios being easily and conven-" iently held in the hand while the periodical or the like contained therein is being perused or examined. WVith this object I construct such a portfolio of a stiff back and front cover connected together by a flexible part as heretofore, and in an extension of this part or at the back thereof, I secure a stiffening bar, rod or the like which may be conveniently gripped in the hand when said portfolio is open and in use. When preferred the back and front covers of such a portfolio when open may be so supported that these will not turn back to an inconvenient extent and for this purpose I connect them together across the flexible part by springs or the equivalent suitably arranged and of the required strength to give the necessary support.

A portfolio embodying my improvements is illustrated by the accompanying drawings and I will further describe my invention by the aid thereof.

Of these drawings Figure 1. is a perspective View of the complete portfolio, Fig. 2. is an enlarged detailed view of a part thereof.

As shown the portfolio comprises the usual stifl back and front covers a and 6 connected to one another by a flexible hinge comprising inner and outer members 0 and c. In an extension or addition of the outer member of the hinge is secured a stiffening board, rod or the like, cl, formed of wood or other suitable material and of such a size and shape that it may be conveniently gripped in the hand, and the portfolio so held when opened and in use.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is In a portfolio comprising back and front covers connected together by a flexible hinge, the combination with said hinge of a stiffener of a form which may be conveniently gripped in the hand when said port folio is opened.
