BOOK-COVER PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,004, dated October 21, 1884.

To all whom, it may concern:

Beit known that we, HENRY T. BIRCHARD and ARTHUR L. Turns, citizens of theUnited States, residing at Montrose, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Book-Cover Protector, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to theacconipan ying drawings.

rlhis invention relates to book-cover protectors; and it has for its object to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and efficient protector which may be applied to books of varying thickness having the same length and breadth, said protector being readily adjusted to the book-cover and removable, as desired.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the sides of the protector, which are folded at a in the usual manner to receive the covers ot' a book, said protector being preferably constructed of tin orequivalent metal. Asshown, the sides A A are made of separate pieces ot1 metal, and connected at the back by elastic strips B B, which are sufficiently yielding to 4o permit of adapting the protector to books ol' different thicknesses. Two elastic strips, B, are shown-one at the top and the other at the bottoni; but as many more may be added as found desirable. As shown, the elastic strips extend transversely across the back of the book-cover through slots Z) in the edges ot' the protector, the ends of the strips B having a stoppin, C, secured thereto, said pin vserving to hold the ends ot the strips from slipping through the slots.

The cover-protector is applied to the book in the usual manner by folding down the edges, as shown at c, the transverse strips extending across the back of the book-cover. It' it should be desired to apply the protector to another book having the same length and breadth, this may be done by slipping thepro- 6o tector oft and attaching it in position to the said book in a similar manner. By this construction we are enabled to provide a protector which may be applied to books of varying thicknesses, having the same length and breadth,` the elasticity of the strips accommodating the protector to the degrees of thickness of the book.. The metallic construction ofthe sides enables'the protector to prevent the book from being abused, and, besides, the 7o rigidity of the sides will materially strengthen and brace the book-cover. The surfaceof the book-cover will not become marred, as is usually the case, but will be kept clean, so that I the book will be preserved in good condition The metallic sides will also forni a good support for worn-out books, and, in connection with the elastic strips, serve to hold them in good shape.

The improved cover-protector is designed 8o for use in public and private libraries, in Sunday schools, common schools, and for use in countinghouses and other places where it is necessary to have a protector for the books which undergo rough use in constant hand 85 ling.

Our improved protector is simple in its construction, durable in use, convenient in its application to the books, inexpensive to manufacture, and will prove of great utility to pro- 9o tect the book from wear. The elastic strips act as a hinge in opening the book, so that after the book has been once opened it will be retained in that position until closed by the person -using the same.

Other advantages of our invention will be apparent, and will be demonstrated by practical use.
