This invention relates to an improved form of binder for a removable book cover which is adapted detachably to support or hold a book or books or other objects such as salesbooks or 5 pads used by merchants in recording and keeping their accounts and rendering bills for goods purchased when desired.

In devices of this type, leaf or book engaging bars are usually provided to hold the book or lo pad in position. Each device is provided with one or more of such bars pivotally attached to a rigid back member secured to the removable cover. Latch members engage the free end of the bars to lock the bars against movement when 15 the books or pads are inserted. From practical experience with binders of this type, it is found that while the parts may serve their purpose, yet the results have not been satisfactory. The manner in which these parts are related have resulted in cumbersome and bulky structures. The locking parts protruded to such an extent as to interfere with the convenient handling of the book or pad secured in the cover by the binder.

An object of this invention is to provide a binder construction having the leaf or book engaging bar substantially at and parallel to the rigid back member, the space between these parts being suicient to accommodate only the back of the book or pad and the portion of the cover lying over the rigid back member. The simplicity of this arrangement permits the use of a locking member for the book engaging bar which is so pivoted at one end of the rigid back member as to swing in a plane parallel to the book engaging bar andin contact with its upper face, so that, by means of cooperating locking shoulders provided upon these parts, the locking member will snugly slide over and upon the book engaging bar to lock it in closed position. 4 Mounting the locking member to swing in a parallel plane with respect to the book engaging bar provides a very simple construction because this locking member may be positioned close to the book engaging bar and not at an 45 extended distance, which will interfere with the ready handling of the book or pad held by the binder.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the removable book cover may comprise side sections 2 and 3 connected together by an intermediate flexible back portion 4. The side sections may be composed of stiff material, such as cardboard covered by cloth or leather, and

the intermediate flexible back portion 4 may be of any material, say cloth or leather, which will allow the side portions 2 and 3 to swing open as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. An interior lining 5 may be stitched or otherwise secured within I as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4. The parf ticular type of book or pad that may be used may vary in construction, excepting that there should preferably be a back portion 10 separated from the leaves 19 of the book. The manner of securing leaves 19 together, to form the book, does not comprise a part of the present invention because it will be understood that a book or pad of any desirable construction may be used.

It will be noted that leaf or book engaging bar 8 passes within the back portion 10 of the book or pad to be inserted whereby the lower end of this bar may be locked in closed position by a locking member 11. Locking member 11 is pivoted at l2 to the lower end of rigid back member 6, in a manner to allow the same to swing in a plane parallel to that of the book engaging bar 8 when in closed position. Furthermore, pivotal mounting 12 disposes locking member 11 in close proximity to the hook engaging bar 8, so that when this locking member 1l is swung to locking position as illustrated in Fig. 5, it will lie substantially against the face of book engaging bar 8. A shoulder 13 is provided at the lower end of rigid back member 6 by cutting the side of the latter away slightly as indicated at 14.

A cooperating shoulder 15 is provided on locking member 11 by bending the side thereof into a right angular lip 16. A bead 17 is formed upon the inner face of locking member 11 so that it will engage in a cooperating depression 18 in leaf or book engaging bar 8. Swinging locking member 1l into locking position, as illustrated in Fig. 5, brings bead 17 into engagement with depression 18 and brings shoulder 15 against shoulder 13. Leaf or book engaging bar 8 is spaced in close proximity to the rigid back member 6 so as to allow a slight outward tension to be placed thereupon when it is inserted through the back portion of the book or pad. This tension or bulging action of book engaging bar 8 tends to force the lower end thereof outwardly and therefore into firm engagement with locking member 11, with the result that when the locking member 11 is swung into locking position, it is firmly held against displacement and will securely hold the book engaging bar 8 in closed position.

It will be understood, however, that mounting 12 of locking member 11 may be arranged not to require this tension or bulging action of book engaging bar 8 in order that the locking member l1 will securely hold it in locked position. Book engaging bar 8 preferably lies parallel to rigid back member 6. This construction advantageously permits locking member 11 to be mounted for swinging movement in a plane parallel to both the rigid back member 6 and the book engaging bar 8. It further permits such a close relation of these parts that when the proper tension er bulging action of the book engaging bar 8 occurs, locking member 11 will ride over and engage the outer face thereof. The manner of securing locking member l1 in proper locking relation with the book engaging bar 8 is extremely simple, because it only requires say cooperating shoulders 13 and 15 and bead 1'7 and cooperating depression 18.

The same principle of construction may be employed in cases where it is desirable to have bar 8 engage between the leaves instead of being inserted through the back portion of the book or pad. However, by providing the rigid back member 6 and the book engaging bar 8 substantially flat, they may be disposed in close relation by a simple hinging action so as to avoid any excessive bulging between the binder and the book mounted therein.

Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the gist of my invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adopt the same for use under varying conditions of service, without eliminating certain features, which may properly be said to constitute the essential items of novelty involved, which items are intended to be dened and secured to me by the following claims.

I claim: l

1. In attaching means for a removable book cover, a rigid back member secured to said book cover, a book engaging bar hingedly secured at one end to said rigid back member, and a locking member for said book engaging bar, said locking member being secured at the opposite end of said rigid back member for swinging movement in a plane substantially parallel to that of said book engaging bar to engage the free end thereof.

2. In attaching means for a removable book cover, a rigid back member secured to said book cover, a book engaging bar hinged at one end to said rigid back member, a locking member for locking said book engaging bar in closed position, means for mounting said locking member at the opposite end of said rigid back member to swing parallel to and in contact with the outer face of said book engaging bar, and cooperating locking shoulders on said locking member and said rigid back member.

4. Attaching means for a removable book cover comprising a substantially flat rigid back member secured to said book cover, a substantially flat book engaging bar secured to swing about one end of said rigid back member and to lie substantially close and parallel thereto when in closed position, said book engaging bar being arranged to lie between the back and the binding of the book held in the book cover, and means for locking said book engaging bar in closed position.

5. Attaching means for a removable book cover n to one end of said back plate, both said back plate and said binding bar being substantially flat and parallel to each other when said binding bar is swung to closed position, and a pivoted locking member secured to the opposite end of said back plate, said locking member being substantially flat and parallel to said back plate and said binding bar and movable over the free end of said binding bar to lock it in closed position.
