IVILLIAM H. CARRIER, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
DESK ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,514, dated. June 28, 1898.
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLiAM II. CARRIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enabte others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improvement in adj ustable supports for holding a board for use in reading, writing, or drawing; and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l repre sents a perspective view of a table, desk, or other article having my improved device attached thereto and supporting a board in an inclined position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device, showing one of its adjusted positions in dotted lines and another in full lines. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the device.
My improved adjustable support consists, essentially, of two members, one of which I term for convenience the tableclamp and the other I term the board-clamp.
The table-clamp consists of a plate A, which is provided with a pair of parallel jaws a a, separated sufficiently to allow them to re ceive the edge of a desk or table of considerable thickness. The lower jaw is provided with a threaded aperture, through which extends a set-screw 0 provided, preferably, with a winged head a at its outer end and at its inner end with a clamping-plate a for e11- gaging the under side of the table or desk, which in this instance is designated D. In order to prevent the plate a from turning with the screw a, I provide it at one end with rearwardly-extending arms a which embrace a vertical portion a of the plate A, as shown in the drawings. I prefer to attach the upper end of the screw a permanently to the plate a by forming an aperture insaid plate coun tersunk on its upper side and by upsetting the end of said screw slightly in said aperture, the end of the screw lying below the top gages the plate B.
Application filed January 26, 1898. Serial No. 667,991. No model) prevent scratching the article to which the clamp may be attached. At the inner end of the upper jaw Ct the plate A is provided with 'an aperture a so located that it will be substantially in line with the upper corner of the edge of the desk or table to which the clamp is attached, and the rear portion of the plate A is provided with a curved slot a concentric with the said aperture a The board-clam p consists of a plate ll, provided with horizontal flanges b 1), extending on one side of said plate. The upper flange 1) is provided with a threaded aperture which is engaged by a set-screw I), having a winged head and to the other end of said set-screw is attached a movable clamping-plate biwhich is secured tothe set-screw inthe same manner as above described with reference to the plate a and set-screw a, and the inner edge of said plate b engages the plate 13, thus preventing the cla1nping-plate from turning with the screw. The plate B is pivotally connected to the plate A by means of a pivot-pin, preferably in the form of a rivet b, which passes through the aperture (i in the plate A, and
the plat-ell is provided with an adjusting setscrew b also having a winged head which passes through theconcentric slot a and en- It will be seen that by loosening this screw h? the board-clamp can be adjusted to different positions with respect to the plate A, and theslot a will be so formed that a board held in the board-c1amp B, as shown in the drawings, may be adjusted from a horizontal position to an inclination of nearly ninety degrees.
It will be observed that by means of the adjustable clamping-plate b boards'of different thicknesses may be used with my improved device, andwhen a board is secured in the board-clamp and the table-clamp is secured to a desk or table the edge of the board opposite the clamp will rest upon the edge of the table by reason of the fact that the pivotpin 73 is substantially in line with the upper corner of the table edge, as before described,
so that the board is supported at one side by right with the board before him at any desired angle and write, draw, or study without stooping.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A support comprising among its members, a clamping device adapted to be secured to a desk or other article, having a pair of clamping-jaws, forming a clamping-recess between them, a board-holding device pivoted to said clamping device, substantially in linewith the upper and inner corner of said clam ping-recess, and means for adj ustably securing said board-holding device in different positions, whereby the edge of the board opposite the board-holding device will rest upon the edge of the desk or other article, substantially as described. A
2. A support comprising among its members, a plate provided with a pair of clamping-jaws, forming a clamping-recess between them, forengaging the edge of a desk or other article, a board-holdin g device pivoted to said plate substantially in line with the upper and inner corner of said recess, and provided with means for attaching it to one edge of a board, the said plate being provided with a curved slot concentric with the said point of pivoting, and a set-screw passing through said slot and engaging said board-holding device, whereby the edges of the board opposite the clamp will rest upon the edge of the desk or other article, substantially as described.
3. A support comprising among its members a clamping device provided with clamping-jaws forming a clamping-recess between them adapted to engagethe edge of a desk or other article, a board-holdin g device provided with an adjustable clamp for holding boards of different thicknesses, pivoted to said clamping device, substantially in line with the up- .per and. inner corner of said clamping-recess,
and means for adjusting said board-holding device with respect to the clamping device to hold the board in different angular positions, whereby the edge of the board opposite the board-holding device will rest upon the edge of the desk or other article, substantially as described.
4. A support comprising among its members, a plate provided with a fixed jaw and an adjustable jaw, forminga clam ping-recess between them for engaging the top of a desk or other article, said plate being provided with a pivot substantially in line with the upper and inner corner of said recess, and a curved slot concentric with said pivot and a board-holding device secured to said plate by said pivot and provided with an adjustable clamp for holding boards of different thicknesses, and an adjusting set-screw passing through said slot and engaging said board-holding device, whereby'the edge of the board opposite the board-holding device will rest upon the edge of the desk or other article, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
