To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVAR H. P. COLLEEN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Misssouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy Holders for Type- IVriters, &c.; and 1 do declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertai'ns to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in copy-holders adapted for.

use in connection with type-writers and such other uses as it may be put to; and it consists in the provision of a rack or holder having clamping-jaws for attachment to the frame be read without the necessity of the operators turning his or her head.

The invention consists, further, in the provision of an adj ustable means held by the copy-engaging member to adapt the same to books of difierent thicknesses and in the provision of means for making the rack or holder extensible to hold copies of different sizes.

The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations of parts,which will be hereinafterfully described and then specificallydefined in the appended claims.

My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my copyholder shown as applied to the right-hand side of a type-writer and showing extensible rods held thereto to adapt the copy-holder to hold books or papers of different sizes. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing my improved copyholder as applied to the frame of a type-writer 2. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing a slight modification of my copy-holder shown as applied to the left-hand side of the frame of a type-Writer and showing a plurality of clipcatches to which is journaled the adjustable rod that holds the copy flat and has extensible copy-holding rodsmounted thereon. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a copy-holder shown as'applied to the frame of a type-writer and illustrating 'means for adjusting the copyholding rod to different thicknesses of books or paper. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the copy-holder illustrated in Fig. 4, showing the means for holding rod at any adjustment to lay flat onany thickness of a copy or book held by the clamping edge of the jaw. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a detail view of clamping mechanism which is employed in connection with the form of type-writer illustrated in Fig. 1 for clamping the lowerportion of the frame of a type-writer. Fig. 8 is a View showing my improved copyhold'er as attached to a section of a wall, table, desk, table-partition, or other suitable article, showing the same adapted for use in holding a copy independent of the frame of a typewriter.. Fig. 9 is a view showing a slightlymodified form of my copy-holder, the clamping means being shown as applied to the upper flanged edge of the frame of a type-writer. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a foot to which the copy-holder may be attached when used independent of the frame ofa type-writer; and Fig. 11 is another form of foot adapted to engage the rod or shank portion of a copy-holder and adapted to be used independent of the frame of a type-writer. Fig. 12 is a' sectional View through adjusting clamping means adapted for connection to the rear portion of the frame of a typewriter, with the bar formed to support copy-holder over the top of the machine. Fig. 13 is a sectional View through the copy-holding plate, showing the serrations formed on the edge thereof.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, G designates a plate of a copy-holder having a shank portion G ICO on one corner thereof, which is adapted to be held in a socket G Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, which socket member is integral with a jaw G (shown clearly in Fig. 7 of the drawings,) and said jaw G has an integral angled arm G designed to engage over the edge of a portion of the type-writer frame and cooperating with a jaw G which engages under the bottom of the frame of a type-writer, said jaws G and G having parallel flanged portions G, which are held together in clamping relation against the frame of a machine by means of set-screws G A thumb-screw G is mounted in a boss G having a bore with threaded wall therein, said thumb-screw being designed to engage the arm G to hold the copy-holding plate Gin place. In Fig. 1 I have shown the plate as having arms H secured to its inner edge, and H designates a clip-catch having arms H to which the ends of a bar H are fastened, and integral with said arms H is a copy-holding jaw H provided with teeth H upon its under edge, which are adapted to cooperate with the serrations or teeth H upon the upper surface of the plate and adjacent to its inner edge. -A coil-spring H is provided for the purpose of holding the clip catch jaw I-I yieldingly against the copy resting upon the plate G. Said spring has ends which are adapted to engage a rod H, which is mounted in the ears H, and a loop formed at the middle portion of said spring is adapted to bear against the under face of the clip -catch H for the purpose of holding the latter yieldingly against the plate G. It will be observed upon reference to Figs. 1 and 8 of the drawings that the ends of the jaw Htare cut away or recessed, as at H at each end, and a rod or wire H is provided having two portions bent parallel and bent at right angles at two locations, (indicated by letters H and H illustrated in Figs. 1 and 8 of the drawings,) and the portion H intermediate the two angled portions of the rod is journaled in apertures H in the arms H of the clip-catch member. It will be observed that by the provision of the rod H mounted as described, the same will have a slight movement independent of the jaw H and may be held in difierent planes parallel with the plate G, adapting said rod for use in being held flat against copies of books of different thicknesses. Another purpose of mounting the rod H as describedis to raise the jaw H by taking hold of one end or the other of said rod and raising the latter against the shoulders formed at the recessed ends of the jaw H In Fig. l of the drawings I have shown a socket member H for the reception of an extensible rod H provided to support the outer side of an open book or wide copy held upon the copy-holding plate G, and a set-screw H is provided for holding said rod H in position, and an angled rod H is mounted in a socket H and is provided to be extensible and held in an adjusted position by means of a screw H said angled rod H be ing adapted for use in holding the lower edge of a wide copy or book.

The form of copy-holder shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings is adapted to be used from either side of a type-writer by having the arm G formed to be held in the clamping-member socket G2 upon the right or left side of the machine, and by the form of copy holder shown in Fig. 1 it will be observed that the copy is held at a suitable inclination and convenient location with reference to the operator of'a type-writer.

Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, I have shown the general form of a copy-holder disclosed in Fig. 1 as having a clamp-holding device comprisinga plate K, which has fingers K, Fig. 2 of the drawings, projecting from one edge thereof and which fingers are held in the socket members K by means of the thumb-screws K Said plate K has a handle K, with arms K which are pivoted to the clip-catch K having a jaw K designed to hold the copy against the plate. This attachment is provided for convenience in use in holding bills, papers, &c., for short entry, whereby the leaves of the copy may be easily and conveniently turned over when the operator is making entries.

Referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have shown the copy holding rod N, which is formed to support the copy-holder over the machine, as fastened to clamping means attached to the left-hand side of a type-writer, and the plate N has two arms N and N the former of which is recessed at the outer end to receive an extensible rod N while the lower rod N is recessed vertically to receive an angled rod N said rods being held in place by means of suitable thumb-screws. In the form shown in this figure I have illustrated a plurality of clip-catches which are of similar construction and are identical with the clip-catches disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2. A rod N similar to the rod H in Fig. 2, is provided, which is journaled in suitable bearings integral with the jaws N the two clipcatches being held with their jaws against the plate N by means of suitable springs.

The clip-catches illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings are so mounted that both will be raised simultaneously by raising one end or the other of the rod N when it is desired to adjust the copy in place or remove the same from the copy-holder.

It will be observed that the copy-holder shown in Fig. 3 can be supported over typewriters by being clamped to either the right or left side of the machine.

In order to retain the copy-holding rod in adjusted positions and in different planes parallel with the plate forming a part of the copy-holder in adapting the device to engage books or copies of different thicknesses, I have provided the mechanism illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, in which the bar Q is fastened to a clamping member Q, and a plate Q carries the usual clip-catch Q with a spring Q (shown clearly in Fig. 6 of the drawings,) said catch having a jaw Q with its ends recessed at Q, forming shoulders against which the rod Q is adapted to contact. A boxing Q on said clip-catch has a boss Q provided with an aperture adapted to receive the spool Q a detail view of which is clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, said spool having an annular recess Q, the wall of the contracted portion in said recess being preferably many sided for the purpose of giving a bearing to the end of the thumb-screw Q when it is desired to hold said spool from rotation. Fastened to the shank portion of said spool outside of said boss is a string or wire Q the other end of which is fastened to the rod Q By the provision of this spool it will be observed that by rotating the same and winding the string or Wire upon said spool said rod Q may be held in different 10- cations in planes parallel to the plate holding the copy and adapting it for books or copies of different thicknesses. In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown a handle on the clipcatch section Q whereby the jaw may be opened thereby Without taking hold of the adjustable rod Q The rod Q, that supports the copy-holder in front of the machine, (shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings,) which has its lower end held in the socket member which is clamped to the side on the lower portion of the typewriter, is formed to clear, so that one operating the type-writer can use his or her hands to handle the type-writer carriage without being hindered by the copy-holder or by said copy-holder-supporting rod Q, and the rod Q can be formed to support the copy-holder over or in front of a machine from socket of clamping member held to either right or left side on lower portion of the type-writer frame.

In Fig. 8 I have shown my improved copyholder as applied to a portion T of a table, wall, table-partition, or other device, 'I" designating a plate having integral apertured lugs T to which the olip-catch H is pivoted.

Referring to Fig. 9 of the drawings, I have shown my copy-holder slightly modified and as applied to clamping members which are fastened to the upper front portion of the frame of a type-writer, in which view E designates a clamping member having a projecting portion E, which is apertured to receive the lower end of the copy-holder-supporting rod F, and said rod is held in adjustable positions within said projection by means of a thumb-screw E ,on the shank portion of which is a jam-nut E A second jaw of said clamping member (designated by letter E) engages over the upper flanged portion of the frame and is held to the jawE by means of screws e, as clearly shown. The plate E is shown as secured to the copy-holder-supporting rod F and has a bar E projecting at right angles from the said plate E The bent portion of the rod F adjacent to the plate E l is slightly raised, as at E a-sis also the finger E also projecting from the edge of said-plate, said portions being raised for the purpose of preventing the copy from coming in contact with the edge of the plate when inserted between said bar E and the copy-holding rod or finger E to be held at its edge against plate E by the clamping edge of clip-catch. Said plate has a handle E and also two bracket-arms E The clip-catch (designated byE has a handleE thereon and arms which are fastened to a rod E, which rod is journaled in bracket-arms E and a spring similar to the one illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings is provided for the purpose of holding the clamping edge of clip-catch E against the plate E A rod E is pivotally mounted in the angled ends of the clip-catch E and has a laterally-extending finger or rod E which passes through a recess in the jaw of the clip-catch and is provided for the purpose of codperating with the extensionE to hold a copy flat. The handles E and E may be gripped when it is desired to open or close the clip-catch jaw.

The supporting-rodF is formed to clear, so that one operating a type-writer can use his or her hands to handle the type-writer carriage without being hindered by the copyholder or by the said copy-holder-supporting rod.

In Figs. 10 and 11 I have shown detail views of different means for supporting the copyholder independent of the machine.

In Fig. 12 Ihave illustrated clamping-jaws R and R, which are adapted for connection to the rear of a type-writerin which the jaws may be adjusted to engage portions of the frame of different widths, said jaws being held at right angles to each other and illustrating an intermediate member R to which said jaws are adjustably connected and being provided with a socket for the reception of the copy-holding rod, which is formed to support the copy-holder over the top of the machine.

By making slight alterations in the clamping members, which hold copy-holders to any suitable portion of a type-writer frame, (without departing from the spirit of the invention,) they are adapted for use in connection with any make of type-writer, and the rods,

shank portions, or copy-holder supports can be formed to hold copy-holders at a convenient and suitable inclination to either side over or in front of a type-writer from sockets of clamping members held at any suitable location to the frames of such machines.

While I have shown and described difiereut modifications of my copy-holder, it will be understood that I may make various alterations in the detailed. construction of the same, so as to adapt the copy-holders for use in connection with all makes of type-writers of various kinds, consisting of alterations in the construction of the clamping members by which the copy-holders are held to the frames of type-writers, the shape of the copy-holdersupporting bars or the shank portions which support copy-holders, the form of the racks or plates, clamping members for holding the copy to the racks, &c., without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A copy-holder having a plate or rack, a rod and clamping means for supporting the same, a spring-actuated clip-catch pivotally mounted on the holder adapted to hold the edge of a book or copy against the face near edge of said plate or rack, and a copy-engaging rod carried by said clip-catch and having a slight movement independent of said catch and adapted to hold a book or copy fiat against said plate or rack, as set forth.

2. A copy-holder having a plate or rack, a rod supporting the same, and clamping means for engaging said rod, a spring-actuated clipcatch pivotally mounted on the holder, a copyengaging rod carried by said spring-catch and adapted to adjust itself to different thicknesses of books or copies, as set forth.

A copy-holder comprising a plate or rack, a rod supporting the same, clamping means for engaging said rod, a spring-actuated clipcatch mounted upon said plate, a copy-engaging rod pivotally mounted upon said clipcatch and having a slight movement independent thereof and adapted to adjust itself to different thicknesses of copy being held by the clip-catch, and means for holding said copy-engaging rod in different positions with relation to said plate, as set forth.

4. A copy-holder comprising a plate having a shank portion, clamping-jaws adapted for engagement with the frame of a typewriter or other instrument and engaging said shank portion, a spring-actuated clip-catch secured to the said plate and having a jaw with serrated edge cooperating with the plate for holding a copyin place, a pivoted angled bar carried by the clip-catch and adapted to bear against shouldered portions of the jaw of the clip-catch to raise and lower the same, as set forth.

5. A copy-holder comprising a plate with a shank portion, clamping-jaws for holding said copy-holder to the frame of a type-writer or other instrument, a spring-actuated clipcatch mounted upon said plate, teeth on the edge of the jaw of the clip-catch and adapted to cooperate with the plate to hold a copy in place, the ends of the jaw of the clip-catch being recessed away, shoulders at the ends of said recesses, an angled rod journaled in the clip-catch, and adapted to bear against the shouldered ends of said recesses for the purpose of raising the clip-catch, as set forth.

6. Acopy-holder fortype-writers,&c.,comprising a plate or rack having a shank portion, clamping-jaws adapted to support the same, a spring-actuated clip-catch mounted upon the plate, a jaw integral with said catch having recessed ends, a rod having two parallel portions adapted to engage the shoulders formed at the ends of said recessed portions of the jaw and having an intermediate part which is journaled in said catch, said parallel portions of the rod adapted to hold a copy flat against the plate and have a slight movement independent of the clip-catch, as set forth.

'7. A copy-holdercomprising a plate, clam ping means for supporting the same, arms projecting from said plate,extensible rods mountedin said arms, one of which is adapted to support the lower edge and the other the outer side of an open book held on the copy-holding plate, a spring-actuated clip-catch carried by said plate, a jaw integral with said clip-catch, a copy-holding rod carried by the clip-catch and adapted to raisesaid jaw from the plate, as set forth.

8. A copy-holder comprising a plate and means for supporting the same upon the frame of a type-writer or other object, a spring-actuated clip-catch mounted on said plate, an angled rod journaled on said clipcatch and having a movement independent of the clip-catch, a Winding-spool on said catch and means for preventing the same from rotation, and a cord or wire secured to said angled rod and spool and adapted to wind upon said spool, as set forth.
