To all whom it may concern.-

le it known that 1, WILLIAM S. MGKEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Editors or Reporters Ready Copy-Paper Tablets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a portable desk or tablet, adapted to the use of roll paper and is nore especially useful to and intended for editors, reporters and like writers where long or short articles, and consequently diliferent lengths of paper may be required.

Figure 1, is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2, is a sectional view more fully showing the relative position of parts.

A, is the top of the desk or tablet and B, B, supports or legs at its upper end to raise the same from the table, give it an easy angle for writing, and for the proper working of the other parts of the device. At the upper end and face of A, l have a cutting edge bar E, secured ti) the same with space sufficient between it and A, to allow a thickness of paper to readily pass between them. I also have a slot a, near the lower end of A through which the paper passes, in which I place a small roller F to more readily move the same and prevent friction, or the same may be dispensed with if de sired. On the face of A, I also secure a sheet of lined paper to guide the writer while using the device,or lines for this purpose may be made directly upon the face or top of A. At the upper end of A, and below the same I have a roller J, working in journals formed on the supports B, B, or attached to the same.

I elongate the supports B, B, as shown by 2), for the purpose of forming journals or supports for another roller D, operated by the thumb knob (1.

My device is intended to use continuous or roll paper and after charging the roller j with paper and placing it in position, the end of the paper is carried under A, through the slot a, and over the roller F, along and over the upper face of A, under the guide bar G and the cutting bar E, and attached to and around the receiving roller D. The bar or band as shown by G, is to keep the paper flat in position. ,1 can dispense with this bar if desired and use a simple rubber band which will answer the same purpose and reduce cost of manufacture.

It is well known that editors and reporters necessarily write long and short articles and require different lengths of paper, and by my device theycan gain these ends without waste of paper and always have the facilities for so doing readily at hand by my device.

In operation the Writer will catch hold of the end of the paper after it has passed under the bar E, with his free hand, and while writing and as desired draw out the same from time to time nntilthearticle or editorial is finished, and by drawing the paper across the bar E out off and detach the same from main roll or sheet.

By my device it is not necessary to move the hand up and down the desk or tablet as in usual writing,while any length of article with any space between the lines may be written.

If a long article or report'is required the end of the sheet 0 can be attached to the roller D and wound thereon while Writing, by means of the thumb knob d, and when complete, the roller can be lifted out, the paper out off and drawn off the same.

It can be seen that a lengthy report can be written without the use of the roller D, and I can make the supports 8, B, with or without the elongations shown at b, or have them detachable at pleasure, so that the roller D, can be used or not as desired.

Extra rollers charged with paper can be kept on to replace those from which the paper has been used.

Continuous roll paper is already in the market and my device is adapted to use the same. Such paper has a wooden core which can be removed and the roller C, take its position.

\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The tablet A with writing guide lines on its face and the slot a at its lower end,

provided with the roller F, the adj ustable' guide bar G, cutting bar E; supports B, B, with the elongations 29,. the supply roller C and receiving roller D, with thumb knob d, combined, constructed and operating as described and shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. A writing tablet adapted to the use of continuous-r011 paper, consisting of the tablet fA, with slot (1, guide bar G, cutting bar E, supports B, B, with the elongations 1) supply roller 0, receiving roller D, so combined and operating, that short articles may be witten and detached orlong and continuous ones may be written, secured until the same are complete, and detached when desired.

3. A copy paper tablet for the use of continuous-roll paper, cousistingof the tablet A, with the slot a, guide bar G, and cutting bar E, in combination with the supports B, B and the roller (3, and so constructed and operating that varying lengths of paper may be torn cit and detached as desired for the purpose set forth and described.
