a It is an object of this invention to provide acarton 'for pliable coiled material which may be formed from atnt =a single substantially rectangular die-cut and scored piece t of paperboard, corrugated board or the like which is formed into a self-locking carton held together without the use-of glue, staples, tape or the like.
It is *another object of this invention to provide a self-lockingcarton for rolled or coiled pliable material wvherein an integral support for the hollow center of the *material is provided which support will allow theroll of tnaterial to be rotated thereabout upon a length of the material'being pulled :from the roll.
It 'is a further object of 'this invention to provide a carton which is readilyassenrbled with the coiled or rolled :material therein and a method of assembling the carton by folding opposite ends of the carton blankrinto overlappingrelation so that the blank encircles the coiled or rolled material, moving portions of both ends of the blank into the hollow center of the coiled or rolled material and interlocking engagement with each other.

The end panel 20 has a.first locking section, broadly indicated at 22, connected thereto along a score :line 23. The locking section 22 comprises a first inside or roll support panel '24, lockingears 25 and 26 connected to opposite sides of the panel 24 along respective score lines 27 and 28, a locking flap 30 connected to the panel "24 along a score line 31, and a :locking tab 32 formed on the free end of thelockingflap 30.
The central portion of the end :panel 10 is die-cut on three sides of a substantial rectangle to provide a second locking section broadly indicated at 33. Thelocksing section 3 3 comprises a second inside or roll support panel 34 connected to the end panel 10 along a score line :35, and a locking flap 36 connected :to'the second linside panel 34 along a score line 37. The score line 37 has a three sided die-cut line 38 therein and when the second locking section 33 is folded, in "the manner.illustrated in Figure 2, an opening 40 :is :formed in the central portion of the end panel 10 and a locking tab receiving opening 42 is formed at the juncture of the second inside panel 34 and locking flap 36, for purposes to be later described.

The carton may then be completed by foldingathe blank along the score line 16 so that the side panel 15 connects the end panel 10 and the front panel 13, and
"folding the blank along the score line 2J1 so that the end panel 20 overlies a portion of the :end panel 10 (Figure 4).
The first locking .section 22 may then be folded into the opening 40 along the score line 23 and again along the score line 31 so that the :first inside panel '24 will then extend from the end panel 10'to the front panel 13 and in perpendicular relationship thereto (Figures 4 and 5). The locking ears 25 and 26 will engage the lower surface of the end panel 10 (Figure 8") to hold the panel 24 in position and since the locking ears 25 and 26 try to return to their normal straight line position in .alinement with the inside panel 24, the cars 25 and 26 will resiliently engage the inner wall of the hollow roll of material R. Withthe first locking section in locking position, the locking flap 30 will overlie the locking flap 36 so that the locking tab 32 eX- tends into the tab receiving opening 42 at the juncture of the locking flap 36 and second inside panel 34 'to hold the inside panels 24 and 34 in spaced parallel relation and provide a support for the center of the roll R.
If it is desired to close one end of the open ended "tubular carton thus formed, a closure panel 45 maybe provided at one side of the end panel 10 and connected along a score line 46 (Figure l) and a section 50 connected to the closure panel 45 along a score line 51. If
desired, another closure panel and section may be provided on the side of the blank opposite the side to which the closure panel 45 and section 50 are shown to close bothends of the carton.
In cases where the carton is to be used to hold and dispense a roll or coil of pliable material such as pressure sensitive tape, indicated at T, a thin metal plate may be suitably secured to the side panel 11. The plate 55 may be provided with a serrated edge 56 which extends beyond the edge of the side panel 11 for readily tearing or parting the tape T and the plate 55 will also serve to support the free end of the tape T between the time that the tape T is being used. The tape T is generally wound around a relatively rigid tubular core 57 to form the roll R and the core 57 is supported for rotation (Figure on the first inside panel 24 and second inside panel 34.
Thus, upon the tape T being pulled from the roll R, the core 57 will be rotated around the supporting panels 24 and 34.
In order to facilitate rotation of the roll of tape T, and to reduce the friction between the sides of the roll of tape and the inside surfaces of the carton, one surface of the blank may be completely impregnated with a wax coating may be covered by a thin sheet of polyethylene or plastic material indicated at 60 and adhered thereto. By coating the surface closest to the observer in Figure l, the complete inner surface of the carton will be thus coated as illustrated in Figures 3 through 8. In cases where the carton is completely closed the coating applied will serve as a moisture barrier as well as give additional strength to the carton.
Referring to Figure 6, there will be observed one manner in which the closure panel 45 and the section 50 may be utilized to hang the carton from a wall, drawing board or the like wherein a pair of holes 61 and 62 are provided in the respective panel 45 and section 59. Thus, when the blank is folded along the score line 51 so that the section 50 and the closure panel 45 are superposed, the holes 61 and 62 will line up with each other so that a tack, nail or the like, indicated at 65 in Figure 6 may be placed therein and driven into the wall or other surface, not shown,
The front panel 13 and the locking flap 30 are provided with respective holes 66 and 67 which may be utilized to hang the carton by a tack, nail or the like, indicated at 70 (Figure 7) driven into the wall or other surface, not shown. When the blank is folded into a carton, the holes 66 and 67 will be in alinement with each other so that the tack, passed therethrough, will support the carton.
Although the carton has been described as being for use as a dispensing carton for a roll of pressure sensitive tape, it is to be understood that the carton may be used to dispense other materials formed into a roll or coil such as wire, rope or the like. The carton may be utilized as a package for other materials not intended to be dispensed therefrom such as garden hose and the like or other circular or rectangular objects which are not rolled or coiled and have a hollow or depressed center, such as poston rings, ash trays or the like.
Thus, a self-locking carton has been provided which may be quickly and easily assembled without the use of any type of glue and which is adapted to be made from a single die-cut and scored blank. The carton is provided with a depressed central portion for supporting the hollow center of the coiled or rolled material held by the dispensing carton and the depressed central portion of the carton has locking means provided to hold the carton together.
In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and, al-
though specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. A dispensing carton for rolled pliable material having a hollow center, said carton comprising first and second side panels, a front panel, and first and second rear panels, said panels encircling the roll of material with the first and second rear panels overlapping, a first inner panel hingedly connected to said first rear panel and extending into the center of said roll of material, a second inner panel hingedly connected to said second rear panel and extending through said first rear panel and into the center of said roll, first locking means hingedly connected to opposite sides of the second inner panel, a first locking flap hingedly connected to the first inner panel, a second locking flap hingedly connected to the second inner panel, the first locking flap overlying the second locking flap, and second locking means for locking the first and second locking flaps .together.
2. In a carton according to claim 1 wherein the first locking means is hingedly connected to opposite sides of the second inner panel comprising a pair of locking ears.
3. In a carton according to claim 1 wherein the second locking means comprises a locking tab on said second locking flap, said first inner panel having a locking slot at its juncture with said first locking flap, and said locking tab being engageable with the locking slot.
4. A dispensing carton for rolled pliable material having a hollow center, said carton comprising first and second side panels, a front panel, and first and second rear panels, said panels encircling the roll of material with the first and second rear panels overlapping, a first inner panel hingedly connected to said first rear panel and extending into the center of said roll of material, a second inner panel hingedly connected to said second rear panel and extending through said first rear panel and into the center of said roll, a pair of locking ears hingedly connected to opposite sides of the second inner panel, a first locking fiap hingedly connected to the first inner panel, a second locking flap hingedly connected to the second inner panel, the first locking flap overlying the second locking flap, said first inner panel having a locking slot therein at its juncture with the first locking flap, and a locking tab on the second locking flap engageable with the locking slot to lock the first and second locking flaps together. 5. A combined storage carton and dispenser for a roll of pressure sensitive tape having a hollow center, said carton being formed from a single die-cut and scored piece of material having a pair of side panels, a front panel, and a rear section comprising a rear panel and a connecting panel, the panels being hingedly connected to form a substantially rectangular open ended carton with the connecting panel overlapping a portion of the rear panel, a first inner panel hingedly connected to the rear panel, a second inner panel hingedly connected to the connecting panel and extending through the rear panel, said inner panels extending at right angles from said rear section and into the hollow center of the roll of tape to rotatably support the roll, first locking means on said inner panels for locking said inner panels in spaced relationship to each other, and second locking means for locking the carton in an assembled position.

In a carton according to claim 5 wherein the first locking means on said inner panels comprises a first locking flap hingedly connected to said first inner panel, said first inner panel having a locking slot therein at the juncture of the first inner panel and said first locking flap, a second locking flap hingedly 'connected to said second inner panel, a locking tab on said second locking flap, said first locking flap engaging the front panel throughout the length of the locking flap, said second locking flap engaging the first locking flap throughout the length of the first locking flap, and the locking tab engaging the locking slot to lock the inner panels in spaced relation to each other.
7. In a carton according to claim 5 wherein the second locking means for locking the carton in assembled position comprises a pair of locking ears hingedly connected at opposite sides of the second inner panel to engage the inner surface of the rear panel upon the second inner panel being passed through the rear panel.
8. In a carton according to claim 5, a closure panel hingedly connected to said front panel, and a closure flap hingedly connected to said closure panel and slidably engageable with the rear panel to close one open end of the carton.
9. In a carton according to claim 5, a plate fixed to one of said side panels adjacent one open end of the carton, the plate extending beyond the edge of the side panel and having a tape cutting edge integral therewith for severing tape pulled from the roll of tape rotatably supported in the carton.
