To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, PERRY S. BAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Tight Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to air-tight boxes and aims to produce a box of this character which shall be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and which will be adapted to contain surgical bandages or other articles or material which it is desirable to market in hermetically sealed packages.
The invention in general and one embodiment thereof in particular with many of its attendant advantages will be best understood from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating one practical form of the invention.
Referringto the drawings-Figure l is a plan view of the blank from which the box is formed: Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box before the same is sealed: Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on a'median plane through the box, shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the box when sealed. a
The blank shown in Fig. 1, from which one form of box embodying my invention may be formed, is preferably stamped out or cut from a single piece of material such as cardboard or heavy weight paper. The blank after being cut to the form shown is bentupon the dotted lines to form the box shown in Fig. 2 comprising a bottom 5, front and rear walls 6 and 7, respectively, end walls 8 and a cover 9. The flaps 10 which are formed atthe ends of the front and rear walls 6 and 7 are turned inwardly to aline against the innerfaces of the end walls 8 to which they are secured by an adhesive, thereby holding the box in shape. The end walls 8 are turned inwardly upon the dotted lines to form the flaps 11 and the ends of the cover are also turned inwardly to form the flaps 12 which overlie the flapsll when the box is closed. The free edge of the front wall 7 is also turned inwardly to form the flap 13 over and against which the flap 14 formed on the front edge of the cover 9 is adaptedto lie when the box is closed. A cord 15 is arranged within the box adjacent the'flaps l1 and 13 as shown in Fig. 2 and at least one end thereof projects outside the box to be grasped and pulled when the box is to be opened.
After the box has .been filled with whatever material or article it is desired to containtherein an adhesive is applied, to the upper faces of the flaps 11 and 13 and when the cover is forced down into closed position the flaps 12 and 14 will lie against the faces of the flaps 11 and 13 to which the adhesive has been applied so that these flaps will be stuck together, thereby forming a seal for thebox. The flaps when the cover is closed will lie fiat against the front and end walls 7 and 8, as shown in Fig. 4, and sincethe flaps on the cover and the flaps on the body of the box are sealed together by the adhesive the box as a whole is thereby hermetically sealed. When it is desired to open the box to remove the contents therefrom the protruding end of the cord 15 is pulled in a direction at right angles to the wall of the box from which the cord projects, thereby severing the flaps 11 and 13 from the walls 7 and 8 of the box body whereupon the cover may be lifted and the box'opened.
It is believed that my invention and one practical form thereof will be understood from the foregoing without further description and that I have produced a simple, economical and efiicient air-tight box which can be easily and effectively sealed and readily opened when occasion requires.
I claim:
1.An air-tight box comprising a body provided with a plurality of inwardly extending flaps, and a cover for the said body provided with a plurality of flaps arranged in parallel relation with the flaps upon the body and secured to the flaps on the body by an adhesive, thereby sealing the box.
2. An air-tight box, comprising a body and a cover, the free edges of said body being provided with inturned flaps secured to the cover when the box is closed by an adhesive to form a seal, and a cord arranged within the box beneath said flaps with one end protruding whereby upon pulling the cord the flaps will be severed to open the box.
3. An air-tight box comprising a body having flaps formed upon the free edges thereof and'bent back upon themselves into substantially parallel relation with the Walls of the box, a cover having downwardly projecting flaps adapted to be disposed within the box and secured-to the flaps formed upon the free edges of the walls of the same to form a seal when the box is closed, and a cord arranged within the box with one end protruding to be grasped and pulled, thereby severing the flaps around the periphery of the box to open the same.
4. An air-tight box comprising a body and a cover, the free edges of the said body being provided with flaps disposed inwardly of the box and in parallel relation with the walls forming the body, a cover secured by an adhesive to the said flaps, and a cord embraced between the said flaps and the Walls of the body for severing the flaps from the body to open the box.
5. An air-tight box comprising a body having a wall formed of a sheet of readily with a flap disposed within the box, a cover formed of a sheet of similar material and having a flap secured by an adhesive to the first-mentioned flap, and a cord disposed between'the flaps and one of said sheets for severing the flap from the said sheetto open the box.
6. An air-tight and a cover, the free edges of the said body and cover being secured together by an adhesive, and means interposed between the body of the box and the said free edges for severing the same from the body to unseal the box.
