Description

W. R. NIPPERJ FRUIT JAR COVER.
APPLICATION FILED Nov. 10. 1921.
1,422,883. Patented July 18, 1922.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM ROBERT NIPPER, OF GRANTS FASS, OREGON.
FRUIT-JAR COVER.
Specification of letters Patent.
Patented July 128, 192?).
Application filed November 10, 1921. Serial No. 514,234.
T 0 (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM lionnnr Nirrnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Grants Pass, in the county of Josephine and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fruit jar covers, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide an attachment for fruit jar covers of conventional construction which is adapted to be attached to the cover to depend within a jar and which operates to hold the contents of the jar below the level of the liquid therein, thereby precluding the possibility that mold may form on the contents of the jar, as commonly occurs when the contents or" the jar come in contact with the usual cover.
A further objectof my invention is to provide an attachment of the character described which can be operatively applied to fruit jar covers of various known types of construction, without any extensive changes, if any, being required in the construction of such covers.
A further object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the character described which is made of a material that will not corrode, be affected by, or affect the contents of a fruit jar equipped with my invention.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, in which z- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a fruit jar equipped with my invention, portions being broken away and other portions being shown in section,
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the attachment,
Fig. 3 is top plan view of another portion of the attachment, and
Fig. 4; is a side elevation of the attachment applied to a jar cover of a different type of construction than that illustrated in Fig. 1, portions of the attachment being broken away and other portions of the attachmentand the cover being shown in section.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, a body portion or web 1 is provided at one end with an integral flange 2 and at its opposite end with an integral flange 3. The body portion or web 1 and the flanges 2 and 3 are formed of a suitable non-cor rosive material, such as porcelain, which will not be affected by the action of the fruit juices nor detrimentally affect the contents of a fruit jar equipped with the invention. The body portion 1 is shown as being cylindrical in the drawings, but obviously may have any desired configuration without departing from the spirit and scope of the invent-ion. The flange 2 may be larger diametrically than the flange 3, though not necessarily so, and the outer or peripheral wall of the flange 2 is reduced adjacent to its inner end, as at 4, to provide an annular shoulder 5. The flange 2 has its outer face slightly concaved or depressed at the approximate center thereof, as indicated at 6. A plurality of openings 7 extend transversely through the flange 2 and the flange 3 is likewise provided with transverse openings 8.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof will be readily understood. In l, I show the device operatively applied to the usual cover 9 of a fruit jar 10 of a well known type of construction. It will be observed that the annular shoulder 5 rests upon the upper end of the filler neck 11 of the jar and is clamped to the end of said filler neck by the cover 9, which is formed to engage the outer wall of the filler neck as at 12, no changes or alteration in the construction of the cover 9 being required. The body portion 1 and the flange 3 will be suspended within the neck portion of the jar and the flange 3 will contact the contents of a jar, indicated at 13, thereby holding such contents below the level of a liquid 14 in the jar and obviating the danger that mold may form on such contents, as usually happens when the contents of a fruit jar contact the usual cover 9. The liquid 14 is permitted to pass through the opening 8 in the flange 3 and may also pass between the outer edge of the flange 8 and the inner wall of the jar. Since the upper face of the flange 2 is slightly concaved, the attachment is suitable for application to jar covers which are depressed at their centers, as well as to fiat jar covers, as illustrated in the drawings.
In Fig. i I show the attachment operatively applied to a cover 20 which has a diameter considerably greater than that of the flange 2. When applied to the jar cover of the type of construction illustrated by the cover 20, clips 21 are fixedly attached in any suitable known manner to the inner wall of the cover 20 in position to be projected through the opening 7. It will be manifest that the flange 2 will be detachably secured to the inner side of the cover 20 when the ends of the clips 21 are upset or clinched against the inner side of the flange 2, as indicated at 22. It will thus be obvious that an attachment embodying my invention may be operatively applied to a fruit jar cover of any well known type of construction.
I claim V 1. A an article of manufacture, an attachment of the character described comprising a body portion formed with a flange at each end thereof, each of said flanges being formed with an opening extending transversely therethrough, the opening through one of said flanges being adapted to be engaged by fastening means carried by a jar cover to detachably secure said attachment to the cover;
2. The combination with a fruit jar cover, of an attachment therefor, said attachment comprising a body portion having a flange at each end thereof, said body portion and said flanges being formed of a noncorrosive material and one of said flanges being larger diametrically than the other flange, said relatively large flange being smaller diametrically than the cover and being provided with a plurality of openings extending 1 ,asases transversely therethrough, and fastening means fixedly secured to the inner face of said cover in position to project through said transverse opening, said fastening means being arranged to engage with the inner side of said relatively large flange to clamp the latter against the inner face of the cover.
3. The combination with a fruit jar cover of an attachment therefor, said attachment comprising a body portion having a flange at each end thereof, and fastening means carried by said cover for detachably securing said attachment to said cover to depend from the under side of said cover.
at. The combination with a fruit jar cover, of an attachment therefor, said attachment comprising a body portion having a flange at each end thereof, one of said flanges being provided with an opening extending transversely therethrough, and fastening means secured to the inner face of said cover for engaging the opening through said flange to detachably secure the latter to said. cover.
5. The combination with a fruit jar cover, of an attachment therefor, said attachment comprising a body portion having a-flange at each end thereof, and each ofsaid flanges being provided with a plurality of openings extending transversely therethrough, and fastening means fixedly secured to the inner face of said cover in position to project through the transverse openings of one flange and to engage with the latter to releasably clamp it against the inner face of the cover.
