Be it known that I, SANFORD ELLERY, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing-Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable 0t ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in dispensing cans and more particularly to an improved vent, especially adaptable to the screw cover or cap of a can for containing oil or other liquid.
One object of the invention is to provide the cap of a dispensing can with means for preventing the iquid which might find its way into said cap from following the threads on its return to the bod of the can, and to cause the liquid to drip 1nto the body of the can without contacting with the walls thereof or with the inner face of the wall of the cap.
A further object is to rovide the cap or cover of a dispensing can Iiaving vent holes, with means to avoid the passage of liquid through the vent holes when the can is tipped, as in pouring.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of arts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a view of a can showing the application of my improvements thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of a can having a screw cap thereon rovided with my improvements. Fig. 3 1s a face view of the cap, inverted.
1 re resents a can, such as commonly employe for containing and dis ensing oil or other liquids, and is provide in its upper portion with a spout 2 through which the oil or other liquid is discharged.
The can is provided in the center of its top wall with a filling opening surrounded by an upwardly projecting threaded collar or flange 3 for the reception of a threaded cap 4.
The cap,4 is provided in its top with vent openings 5. In the drawing I have shown t e cap provided with a series of four of such openings, but it is evident that a greater or less number may be employed, or even one opening might, in some cases, be found sufficient.
A disk 6 is dis osed in close proximity to the under-face of the top of cap 4 and is secured thereto by means of a rivet 6 passing through the center of said disk and the top of the cap. The disk 6 is so constructed that a slight space will be left between the same and the top of the cap so as to permit the entrance of air into the can through the vent openings 5. The disk 6 also serves to prevent the escape of liquid through the vent openings 5 when the can is tipped. The peripheral edge of the disk 6 is scalloped, the points 7 thus formed bein made to extend to the juncture of the vertical threaded wall of the cap with the top of the latter. The curved portions of the disk between the points 7 are bent downwardly to form lips 8. Any li uid which might find its way into the cap wi be caused by these li s to drip back into the can and be prevente from running over the threaded portions of the cap and col lar, and thus leakage of liquid (especially oil) between the threads of the cap and collar will be avoided.
Having fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is,
1. A cap or cover for a dispensing can, provided with a vent opening, a disk located within said cap or cover and rigidly secured thereto, a portion of said disk extending under the vent o ening and disposed a slight distance from the inner face of the top of the cap.
2. A cap or cover for a dispensing can, provided in its top with a vent opening, a disk located within the cap or cover and securely fixed to the top thereof, said disk being disposed to permit the entrance of air through said vent opening and the periphery of the disk provided with depending portions to cause liquid to drip back into a can without contact with the vertical wall of the cap or the collar on the can with which it engages.
3. A cap or cover for a dispensing can provided with a vent opening in its top, a disk rigidly secured to the under side of the top of said cap or cover and extending under said vent opening, and means at the edge of said disk for causing liquid to drip and preventing said liquid from engaging the wall of the cap.
