1 Claim. (Cl. 229-7) This invention relates to cartons or containers, the primary object of the invention being to provide a carton or container having a self-contained strainer whereby foreign matter which may become displaced from the wall of the carton or container, will be strained from the contents of the container or carton as the contents are being poured therefrom.
An important object of the invention is to provide a strainer primarily designed for use in connection with cartons or containers wherein the cartons or containers have their inner surfaces coated with waterproofing material, such as wax or the like which frequently peels off and is poured from the container with the contents.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a strainer which forms a part of the container and is so constructed and arranged that it will not in any way interfere with the opening and closing of the usual discharge opening cover of the carton or container.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a fragmental sectional view through a carton equipped with a straining device, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the carton showing a portion of the usual discharge opening cover as broken away to illustrate the straining device as mounted within the dis charge opening of the carton.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental sectional view through a modified form of straining device.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the usual carton in which milk is contained, and which has its inner surface coated with wax indicated at 6, to render the wall of the carton leak proof.
The reference character 7 indicates the top of the carton which is provided with the depression 8 which is perforated at 9 providing strainer openings.

The reference character 10 indicates the usual cover which is shaped to fit within the depression 8 and seal the openings 9.
In the form of the invention as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing, the carton 10 has its top 11 formed with the depression 12. The wall of the depression 12 is extended inwardly at 13 providing a flange for supporting the strainer 14 which strainer is formed preferably of fine mesh glass, plastic, metal alloy screen or the like.
As shown, the wall of the depression 12 is slightly offset at 15 adjacent to the inwardly extended portions 13, so that the screen 14 is securely held within the offset portion, as clearly shown by the drawing.
In this form of the invention, the reference character 16 indicates the cover for the pouring opening of the carton.
It might be further stated that in forming the depression 12 in this form of the invention, a portion of the depression is cut away providing the pouring opening 17 which is guarded by the screen'14 to screen the contents of the carton as it is being poured from the carton, thereby separating any foreign matter which may be present therein, from the material.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, all possibilities of wax or similar waterproofing material applied to the inner surface of the carton to line the surface, will be strained from the contents of the carton, in the event that such material such as wax or the like becomes disconnected from the inner surface of the wall of the container.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
In a container for containing liquids, a body including a top having a circular depressed portion extending into the container, said depressed portion being partially cut away providing a pouring opening and an inwardly extended annular flange forming the inner edge of said pouring opening, said depressed portion having an annular groove formed therein directly above the flange, a foraminous disc resting on said flange, guarding said pouring opening, the edge of said foraminous disc being disposed within the annular groove securing the foraminous disc against displacement, and a cover hingedly connected to the body and having a circular depressed portion adapted to closely fit into said depressed portion of the top of the container in close contact with said foraminous disc, normally closing said pouring opening.
