c. A. PENNOCK FACE POWDER BOX Filed Dec. 27, 1928 HIHHIHIIIIIIIII 'I IH ll iv z lllllllllllllllllllll ll "III II Patented Feb. 18, 1930 I UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE CHARLES A. PENNOCK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO RICHARD HUDNUT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK FAcE-rowDER Box.
Application filed December 27, 1928. Serial No. 328,727.
This invention relates to face powder boxes in general and more especially to sealed face powder boxes.
With the sealed face powder boxes today extensively used, the prospective purchaser cannot inspect the powder before purchasing the same. To this end, the present invention aims to provide a peep-hole or window in the lateral wall of the powder box through which the powder can be conven iently inspected.
It is a further object of the present invention to locate such peep-hole or window adjacent the lower edge of the powder box so that when the powder box is provided with a cover having an elongated skirt enclosing the lateral wall or walls of the powder box, the prospective purchaser can quickly examine the powder through this peep-hole or 0 window by partially raising the cover and before entirely removing the same.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined detail description of specific embodiments thereof. illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a face powder box with the cover in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a plan of the powder box with the cover entirely removed and the seal partly broken away;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the face powder box showing, in dotted lines, the cover partly raised;
Fig. 4 is a fragmental side elevation enlarged of the face powder box partly in section; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmental side elevation partly in section of another type of face powder box equipped with the present invention.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, there is shown a face powder box having an octagonal base 1 to which are secured two curved walls, in the present instance two cylindrical walls, an inner cylindrical wall 2 and an outer cylindrical wall 3, between the upper edges of which cylindrical walls there is secured the flange 4 of the destructible seal, the paper seal 5. The base 1, in the present instance, extends beyond said vided with an opening 7 preferably smaller than the opening 6 as shown but registering with the same as indicated in Fig. 4. v
Between the walls 2 and 3, and secured to the same, there is provided a sheet of transparent material 8 composed of any suitable gelatinous substance, celluloid, cellophane or the like, said sheet being positioned to extend across the openings 6 and 7 thus forming a transparent cover for the same to serve as a peep-hole or. a window W.
Telescopically receiving the curved or cylindrical walls 2 and 3 forming the lateral wall of the box, there is provided the elongated skirt 9 of the cover 10 extending down to engage the base 1, whereby, in the present instance, the outer face of the outer wall 3 including the window W is completely concealed when the cover 10 is in closed position, see Fig. 1. As illustrated, the skirt 9 preferably has an ornamental outer portion,
polygonal in the present instance.
. When the peep-hole or window W 1s located in the lateral wall ofthe face powder, box remote from the upper edge of such lateral wall and preferably adjacent to the lower edge thereof, as illustrated, the powder P will pack against the inner surface of the sheet 8 adjacent to the opening 7 and present asmooth face of powder clearly indicating the color and fineness of the same to the prospective purchaser viewing the same from the outside. Furthermore, even though the face powder box were not provided with the paper seal 5,
the location of the window W in the lateral;
wall of the box makes it possible for the prospective purchaser to examine the color of the powder by only partially raising the cover 10 as indicated in Fig. 3. The location of the window W will also be serviceable after I the seal has been broken and the face pow{ .der box has come into use. As an instance,
many women today, especially stage folk, use
several powders of different colors. It is'ofcourse well known that powder is frequently spilled around and at any rate sprayed around when a cover is quickly removed. If the user is desirous of protecting her surroundings from such accidentally spilled powder, she would, of course, welcome ameans whereby she could readily detect the color of the contents of the powder box when hurrying to use the same and before entirely removing the'cover 10. K
The box illustrated in Fig. 5 is identical with that illustrated in Fig. 4 except that it is provided with a cardboard sheet 11 adjacent to the seal 5 and between the seal 5 and the powder P. The sheet 11 serves as a reinforcement for the seal 5 and assists in protecting the same against being accidentally pierced, and in turn serves to protect the powder from being accidentally spilled when the seal 5 has been accidentally pierced.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the gen eral spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with the cover of a face owder box having an elongated skirt, of a ace powder box having a base, a cylindrical lateral wall extending up from said base, said base extending beyond said wall to form a protruding flange, a destructible seal having flanges secured to said wall, and a window formed in said lateral wall adjacent to said base, said skirt extending down to rest on said base and concealing said window when said cover is in closed position.
2. The combination with the cover of a face powder box having an elongated skirt, of a ace powder box having a base, an inner cylindrical wall and an outer cylindrical wall secured to said base, said base extending beyond said wall to form-a protruding flange, a destructible paper seal, flanges extending from the edge of said seal and extending down between the upper ends of said wallsand se cured thereto, there being registering openings in said walls, and a transparent sheet secured between said walls and extending across said openings to form a window, said skirt extendin down to engage said base and concealing said closed position.
3. The combination with the cover of a face powder box having an elongated skirt, of a face powder box having a base, a curved wall extending up from said base, said base extending beyond said wall to form a protruding'flange, and a window formed 'in' said curved wall adjacent to said base, said sln'rt extending down to rest on said base and concealing said window when said cover is in closed position.
4. The combination with the cover of a face powder box having an elongated skirt,
window when said cover is in CHARLES A. PENN OGK.
