This invention relates to containers, and comprehends an improved dispensing container or package for granular or flake materials or the like, where it is desirable to form a small discharge opening rather than completely tearing away the cover flaps.
The present invention aims to construct a package in such a manner as to provide a dispensing or discharge opening with a cover therefor normally closed and sealed by a part ofthe container or package, but which is so designed as to facilitate its removal to un cover the discharge or dispensing opening.
More particularly, the invention resides in a dispensing package, in which the overlapped upper and lower top walls are provided with notched adjacent edges defining, together with the upper edge of the adjacent end wall, a dispensing o 'iening, and in which the notched portion of the upper top wall is of greatersize than the lower top wall to accommodate an extension formed on the upper edge of the adjacent end wall which is normally fitted into the notched portion of the upper top wall and adhesively secured to the upper surface of the lower top wall exposed by the notched portion of the upper top wall. to define a. readily removable cover for the dispensing opening, which cover is'flush with the top wall to prevent its accidental derangement in the ordinary handling of the package.
Other objects of the invention reside in the n'ovision of a dispensing package equipped with dispensing means formed as a part of the material from which the package is constructed, whereby to render the same inexpensive of production and to afford a safe and convenient means whereby the contents of the package may be dispensed.
ll' ith the above recited and other objects inview, reference is had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope of the same.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the package or container essentially includes end walls and 11, side walls 12 and 13 and overlapped upper and lower top walls 14 and 15.
The dispensing means is produced by f0rming regis'trable notches 16 and 17 in adjacent edges of the upper and lower over lapped top walls 14 and 15, the notch 16 of the upper top wall It being of greater area or larger size than the notch 17 of the lower top wall 15. In practice, also, the notched edge 18 of the upper topwall 14 is preferably recessed orset back with respect to the end wall 10, to acconnnodate an extension 19 which is formed on the upper edge of the wall 10. The extension 19 is provided with an intermediate projection which corresponds in size and shape to the-notch 16, and the extension 19 may, if desired, be provided with ltmgitrulinally weakened lines 21 coinciding with the wid h of the projection 20. By proiiding the notch 16 of greater area or' size than the notch 17 and recessing the edge 18 of the upper top wall 14, the upper surface of the lower top wall. 15 is exposed zuljacent the notch 17 and adjacent the end wall 10 to permit the extension 19 and projection 20 to be adhesively secured to said exposed upper surface of the lower top wall 15 with the extensionand projection lying liush with the upper top wall 14, whereby a smooth surface is presentct. lVhen it is desired to dispense the contents, the larger end of the projection 20 is raised by inserting a pointed instrument thereunder and destroying the adhesive connection, so that the projection 2 0 and portion of the extension lying between the weakened lines 21may be dis placed to uncover the notch 17,as clearly illustrated inl igures 2 and 4.
' 0bviously, the notches and projection 20 may be variously shaped and the extension and projection may be positioned at various points on the package other than the exact point illustrated, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A dispensing package including overlapped upper and lower top walls formed at adjacent ends with registering notches defining a dispensing opening and an integral extension at the upper edge of an adjacent side wall secured initially to the upper surface of the lower top wall and lying flush within the upper top wall notch to close the dispensing opening and adapted to be released from said lower topwall to uncover the dispensing opening.
2. A dispensing package including overlapped upper and lower top walls, notched portions at adjacent ends thereof defining together with the upper edge of an adjacent end wall, a dispensing opening, the notched portion of the upper top wall being of greater size than the lower top wall and an extension formed on the upper edge of said adjacent end wall fitting into the notched portion of theupper top wall and adhesively secured to that portion of the upper surface of the lower top wall which is exposed by the notched portion of the upper top wall, whereby 'todefine a removable cover for the dispensing opening.
3. A dispensing package having an open ing in one of its walls for discharging the contents of the package therefrom and a cover for said opening formed from the material of the package, said package having a notch therein registering with said opening and of greater size than said opening, said cover being of substantially the same size and shape as said notch and fitting into said notch and secured to the wall to close the opening and detachable to uncover said opening.

A dispensing package having overlapping wall forming portions provided with registering notches at adjacent edges defining a dispensing opening and an extension formed on an angularly related wall of the package lying within the notched portion of the outer overlapped wall and secured to the inner wall to constitute a removable cover for the notch of the inner overlapped wall.

A package including side walls and an end-wall, said end wall being composed of overlapped inner and outer flapsconstituting extensions of opposite side walls, registering notched portions at adjacent side edgesof the flaps defining a dispensing opening in said end wall, the notched portion of the inner flap being smaller than the notched portion of the outer flap and an extension of the side wall contiguous to the notched edges of the flap, said extension fitting within the notched portion of the outer flap and adhesively secured to the portion of the inner flap which 6. A carton fashioned from a single sheet of material and including integral major and minor side walls and overlapped inner and outer flaps integral with the major side walls defining an end wall of the carton, said flaps having registering notches at the corresponding side edges adjacent the upper edge of one of the minor side walls, defining a dispensing opening in the end wall, the notch of the inner flap being smaller than the notch of the outer flap and an extension of the said minor side wall fitting within the notch of the outer flap and adhesively secured to that portion of the inner flap which is exposed by the notch of the outer flap whereby said extension constitutes a readily removable cover for the dispensing opening.
7. A dispensing package including opposite side walls, an inturned flap at the upper edge of said opposite side walls, said flaps overlapping to define upper and lowertop walls for the package, one side edge of the upper top. wall being spaced inwardly from the corresponding side edge'of the lower top wall and said side edges having registering notches defining together with an adjacent all, a dispensing opening and the notch of the upper wall being larger than that of the lower wall, and an inturned extension at the upper ed go of the said adjacent side wall fitting into the notched portion of the upper wall and over the portions of the lower top wall which are exposed by thenotched portion. and the inward spacing of said side edge of the upper top wall.
8. A dispensing package including opposite side walls, an inturned flap at the upper edge of said opposite side walls, said flaps overlapping to define upper and lower top walls for the package, one side edge of the upper top wall being spaced inwardly from the corresponding side edge of the lower top wall and said side edges having registering notches defining together with an adjacent wall, a dispensing opening and the notch of the upper wall being larger than that of the lower wall, and an inturned extension at the upper edge of the said adjacent side wall fitting into the notched portion of the upper wall and over the portions of the lower top wall which are exposed by the notched portion, and the inward spacing of said side edge of the upper top wall, said extension having spaced parallel weakened lines extending outwardly from the sides of the notched portion of the top wall.
