Description

D. D. LEWIS Jan; 20, y1925.
OIL SPOUT Filed June 18, 1923 l 11.111!! lvlb Patented den. 20,1925.
U i T i2 DAVID D. LEWIS, OF
OIL
Application led lTune 18, 1923.
To (f77 cl2/tom if m//gy concer/n.:
Be it known that L Darin D. Lnwis, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful improvement in @il Spouts. of which the following is a fulL clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in oil spouts. and it consists in the combinations. constructions. and arrangements herein described and claimed.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an improvement over tlfat form of the device disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 586,287, tiled Septomber 5, 1922. In said prior application, l disclosed an oil spout which is disposed in the center of the cover and which has an air inlet opening disposed in the cover and adjacent to the spout. The. present device differs from the co-pendiug application in that the spout and air vent are made from a single piece, thereby providing a device that is inexpensive to manufacture.
A. further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described in which the air vent extends the entire length of the spout` thus permittingr any contents ot the jar that may pass through the air vent, in case the jar is turned so as to dispose the vent beneath the spout, to be received in the receptacle into which the contents are being poured.
A further object of my invention is to provice a device of the type described in which the spout is disposed adjacent to the edge of the cover so as to permit all of the contents in the jar to be poured therefrom.
@ther objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the device as shown operatively applied to a jar;` portions thereof being broken away, and
Figure 2 is a section along the line 2 2 of Figure l.
In carrying out my invention I provide a spout that consists of a cover or cap l and a spout 2 The spout is made from a KLAIVSAZOO, LIIGI-IIGAN.
SPOUT.
Serial No. 646,248.
single piece of material and is provided with an air vent 3 that extends the entire length of the trough 2. lt will be noted fromy F ignre 2` that a section through the spout and air vent resembles a figure 8. The spout 2 is separated from the vent 3 by means ot solder or the like 4. The spout and vent are secured to the cap l by solder 5.
lt will be noted from the drawing that the spout 2 is disposed adjacent to one side of the cover l. The inner surface of the jar 6 is iiush with the inner surface of the spout 2 when the cover is secured to the jar. ln this manner` all of the contents of the jar are readily poured from the F rom the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. ln Figure l I have shown the oil spout in tilted position so as to remove the oil from the jar G. The spout 2 is normally disposed in the position shown in Figure l when pouring the contents from the jar. lVhen the spout is disposed in this position, the air will enter through the vent Si so as to permit the contents to rapidly flow from the jar. In case the spout 2 is disposed in such a position as to place the vent 3 beneath the spout, any of the contents of the jar that might tend to pass through the vent 3 would be. received in the receptacle into which the contents are being poured, since the outer opening of the vent is adjacent to the outer opening of the spout. I have found that where the air vent is disposed in the cap l, that a portion of the contents within the jar will pass through the vent when the vent is unknowingly disposed beneath the spout. lWith the present forni of the device, the vent may be disposed on either side of the spout. since the vent is disposed beneath the spout and any oil that might pass through theI vent would be poured off with the oil that is passing from the soout. 'Vith this device the vent does not ave to be placed in a certain position with respect to the spout. The device may therefore be used at night time. or in darkened rooms where it is impossible to see the spout.
The placing of the spout adjacent to one sido of the cover l forms a passageway that drains all of the oil from the jar.
In my (zo-pending application, the spout `is disposed in the center of the cover and it is necessary to tilt the jar into a greater angle in order to pour all of the contents out of the jar. With the present device, the jar does not have to be tipped to such a great angle. The spout and vent made in one piece of material not only provides an inexpensive structure but also provides an air vent that extends the entire length of `the spout The device is extremely simple in construction, durable, and efficient for the purpose intended.
I claim:
A device of the type described comprisextending the entire length exteriorly of Y 1 said spout, said spout being disposed adjacent to one side of said cover so as to make the inner circumference of the spoutl tangent with the inner circumference of Y Vthe neck of the bottle, thus permitting the bottle to efectually drain all of the liquid therefrom.
