Description

Aug. 18, 1959 F. G. DOBBS ET AL RELEASABLE coNTANER HOLDER Filed Dec. 13, 1956 Fran/i' G. B01722755 Ble/aken HB0 19s ATTORNEYS INVEN-roRs United Sta-e8 Pahf o 2,899,999 RELEASABLE CONTAINER HOLDER Frank G. Dobbs, Kew Gardens, and Stephan H. Dobbs, Elmhurst, N.Y.
Application December 13, 1956, Serial No. 628,024 4 Claims. (c1. 15o- 34) It is among the objects of the invention to provide a container holder that may readily be incorporated in a ladies handbag, wallet or the like, that is simple in construction and not likely to become deranged, that will securely retain a container, such as a cylindrical lipstick case of a wide range of diameters, in position and permit ready release of such container by a relatively simple manipulation.
According to the invention, these objects are accomplished by the arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings in which are shown one ormore of various possible embodiments of the several features of the invention:
Pig. 1 is a plan view of a handbag incorporating the invention, in open position,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along line 2--2 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is a View taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 2..
Referring now to the drawings, the container holder is illustratively shown incorporated in a ladies handbag 11 of conventional type.
As shown in Fig. 1, the handbag comprises a cover portion 12 and a pocket portion 13 having a zipper fastener 14 to close the mouth of the pocket portion. Desirably, a rectangular sheet 15 of any suitable material having a rectangular cut-out 16, is secured to the wall 17 of the pocket portion 13. A mirror 18 is positioned between the sheet 15 and wall 17, the surface of said mirror being exposed through the cut-out 16.
According to the invention, the wall 17 of pocket portion 13 has parallel slots 21 therethrough, one on each side of the mirror 18.
Extending through each of the slots 21 are superimposed strips 22 and 23, the juxtaposed inner ends 24 of which have lateral wings 25 of width greater than the length of the associated slot 21 to prevent outward movement of said inner ends through said slots.
A resilient member such as an elastic tape 27 is secured to eachvof such ends 24 and extends between the two pairs of strips 22 and 23.
Each of the strips 22 is of width at its outer end 28, which defines a pull-tab, greater than the length of the associated slot 21 to define stop shoulders 31 which limit the inward movement of such strips 22 under the tension of the elastic tape 27 through the slots 21. The portion of each of the strips 23 which extend outwardly from the associated slot 21, is reversely bent, as at 33 and the reversely bent portion extends back through the slot 21, the inner end 34 of said strip 23 also having lateral wings 35 reinforced by a strip 35 to prevent outward movement thereof through the slot 21.
The reversely bent portion 33 defines a loop in which a suitable container 36 such as a lipstick holder may be positioned. As the loop diameter is initially smaller than that of the container 36, it is necessary that the tab 28 be pulled outwardly against the tension of elastic tape "ICC,
2 Y Y 27. The outward movement of strip 22 will valso movethe strip 23 connected thereto'outwardly to enlargether diameter of the loop.v The container' is inserted into the enlarged loop and the tab 28 isthen released.y `By1reas^on of the tension of the tape 27, the Vstrips22 and 23 willbe" V moved inwardly so that the diameteroff the loop wi1l"'be"-` decreased. Thus, the loop portion 33 of strip"23 will snugly engage the container 36 to 'retain Vit in position-"74" With the construction above described, which may read- 0 ily be incorporated in a handbag or wallet, containers ofi various diameters vmay be securely yet releasably retained in position'. "l V As the speciiication and drawings are directedptorone specific embodiment of the invention, it'A is intendedV that@ all matter therein contained shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A container holder comprising a support having a. slot, a strip extending through said slot and slidably mounted with respect thereto, resilient, means operatively connected at one end to the inner end of said strip, means substantially to restrain the other end of said resilient means from movement when tension is applied to the lirst named end thereof, said resilient means thereby normally retaining the strip in retracted position, a second strip extending through said slot, said resilient means also being operatively connected at its first named end to the inner end of said second strip, the portion of said second strip extending outwardly through said slot defining a loop positioned in juxtaposition to the outer portion of said first strip, the free end of said second strip extending back through said slot, and means on the free end of said second strip to prevent outward movement thereof through said slot.
2. A container holder comprising a support having a slot, a strip extending through said slot, stop means on the outer portion of said strip to limit the inward movement thereof into said slot, resilient means operatively connected at one end to the inner end of said strip, means substantially to restrain the other end of said resilient means from movement when tension is applied to the first named end thereof, said resilient means thereby normally retaining the strip in retracted position, a second strip extending through said slot, said resilient means also being operatively connected at its iirst named end to the inner end of said second strip to maintain both of said strips under tension, means to-limit the outward movement of said strips through said slot, the portion of said second strip extending outwardly through said slot defining a loop positioned in juxtaposition to the outer portion of said iirst strip, the free end of said second strip extending back through said slot, and means on the free end of said second strip to prevent outward movement thereof through said slot.
3. A container holder comprising a support having a slot, a strip extending through said slot, the outer end of said strip being of greater width than the length of said slot to define stop shoulders to limit the inward movement of said strip into said slot, an elastic tape affixed at one end to the inner end of said strip, means substantially to restrain the other end of said tape from movement when tension is applied to the first named end thereof, said tape thereby exerting tension against the strip to retain said latter in retracted position, a second strip extending through said slot, said elastic tape also being operatively connected at its first named end to the inner end of said second strip to maintain both of said strips under tension, said seco-nd strip having lateral wings at its inner end of greater width than the length of said slot to limit the outward movement of said second strip through said slot,
