Description

June 23, 1942.
1.` l... YOUNGHUSBAND @om @am/ Patented `lune 23, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE' LIPSTICK DEVICE James L. Younghusband, Chicago, Ill.
Application October 13, 1941, Serial No. 414,793
(Cl. 20G-56) 1 Claim.
My invention relates to a case for holding lipstick, said case so constructed as to make the lipstick available for application by the user.
Among the objects of my invention is to createy a simplified construction for the projection and retraction of a lipstick with relation to a case. To provide a construction which will project a lipstick so that the same may be applied by the user free from any obstructing mechanism adjacent the projected lipstick and such other l objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawing preferred embodiments of my invention, yet I wish it understood that the same are susceptible of modification and change Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, Fig 1 is an elevational view of my lipstick device in closed position; Fig. 2 is an elevational View oi my lipstick device open for use; Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of Fig, 1; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 2.
The embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a hollow body member III having side Walls II, a closed bottom I2 andan open top I3. A spring I4 is positioned within said body member I0, with the bottom portion of the spring I4 engaging the interior of the closed bottom i2. The upper portion of said spring I4 engages the bottom of a holder or cup I5. The cup I5 is slightly smaller in its dimensions than the hollow interior of the body member Ill, so
as to permit vertical movement with respect 35 thereto. Said cup i5 is adaptedtohold a lipstick IG or the like. A cap or closure Il for the open top I3 is provided, said cap adapted to be removably posione of the side walls I I and then vertically along said side walls to the outside of bottom I2 where it extends horizontally until it enters opening 20 as shown in Figs. l and 3.
In use after the user removes cap Il from open top I3, spring I4 exerts upward pressurevon the bottom of cup I5 and projects lipstick I6 above the open top I3, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. In this position the lipstick I6 is free from any obstruction by the cap I'l and may be used without interference. It will be noted that when the cap Il is removed and released by the user that it .will fall by gravity and the force of spring I4 away from any contact with open top I3 and the exposed lipstick I6. There are no complicated attachments or hinges between the cap Il and the body member I0 adjacent the open top I3. The cap Il being attached to the cord I9 is, of course, not lost when released by the user, but falls out of the way of the open top. The cap can be easily grasped at any time thereafter by the user for closing the device.
After use of the lipstick the user in moving the cap I1 to be .placed on the open top I3 in closed position pulls the cordY I9 so that the cup I5 is forced against the action of the spring I4 back into the interior oi the body member I0- A decorative ball 24 is attached to cord I9 at such a place on the cord that when the device is in open position, the ball being of larger diameter than opening 20 cannot enter therethrough and bears against the exterior of bottom I2 and stopsI further movement of the cord. This prevents spring I4 from ejecting cup I5 beyond the point desirable for a proper exposure of lipstick I6. It is also within the contemplation of my invention that other stopping means may be employed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
tioned by friction grip within depression I on 40 A lipstick device comprising a hollow body the side walls II adjacent their upper ends.
positioned in cup I5 and of a larger size than opening 22 in cup I5 through which cord I 9 below knot 2l passes. Cord I9 may also have a 50 knot 25 positioned in cap Il beyond opening 23 therein` When the device is in closed position, with cap Il covering the open top I3, cord I9 extends member having side walls, a closed bottom and an open top, a holder adapted to hold lipstick movable within said body member, a spring positioned within said body member with its lower portion contacting said bottom and its upper portion contacting the bottom of said holder, a
. separate closure adapted to removably close said open top, said closed bottom having a small opening therethrough, a cord attached on one end to said holder and on the other end to said closure, said cord extending through said opening in said bottom, said spring Iadapted to exert upward pressure on said holder for projecting said lipstick above sald open top when said closure is horizontally across the balance of the cap Il to removed, said closure adapted upon removal from 4 the opening said open top to fall by 'gravity completely away from said open top so that the user may grasp the side walls of the body member free from any obstruction by said closure -for application of said lipstick by the user, said cord adapted upon pressure from the user on said closure to pull said holder with its lipstick against the action of said spring back into Vsaid hollow body member, said cord being of sufficient length to permit said closure to 4be removably positioned to cover said open top, and a ball of larger diameter than in said bottom, said ball attached to of said body member. w
