UNITED STATES ATENT OFFIe REED H. BROWNE, OFRIDGEW'AY, SOUTH CAROLINA.
POCKET ATTACHMENT.
QPEGIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,454, dated June 23, 1896. Application filed Se tember 11, 1395. serial No. 562,126. (No model.)
Ta all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REED l-I. BROWNE, a citizen of the United States, residing atRidge way, in the county of Fairfield and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pocket attachments for use by clerks in stores and other places and designed for holding a pencil and scissors or other articles.
It has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap device for this purpose which may be easily applied and which will not drop out of the pocket when the person is stooping over.
It comprises a tube having extending therein a spring for holding the pencil in place therein and a spring-arm for holding the scissors and also as a clasp to secure the device to the pocket. The pencil-holder goes upon the inside of the pocket and the scissors-holder upon the outside.
Other obj ects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved pencil and scissors holder. Fig. 2 is a substantially central longitudinal section through the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both of the views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a tube of the required length and diameter and of any suitable material. I may make it of aluminium.
B is a spring arranged within the tube and extending in the direction of the length thereof, being secured to the tube in any suitable manner at one end, preferably the upper end It is curved outward from its point of connection with the tube for a short distance and thence extends substantiallyparallel with the wall of the tube, as seen at d, and is then curved to form a coil or convolute cl, the free end of the plate being extended, as seen at (P, v
substantially parallel with the wall of the tube and within the coil.
In use the tube is placed within the pocket of a vest or coat and the outer wall of the pocket enters between the wall of the tube and the spring-plate by which it is firmly grasped or pressed in place. The pencil is placed within the tube and being pressed upon by the spring within the tube is held against accidental displacement, but can be easily removed by a slight pull thereon when it is desired to remove the same. The scissors are hung upon the coil of the outside spring-plate, as will be readily understood.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as new is- The combined pocket pencil and scissors holder herein described, comprising a tube, a spring arranged within the tube and extend ing in the direction of the length thereof and secured to the tube near the upper end thereof and extended over the upper end of the tube and downward upon the outside thereof, the free outer end of said spring being curved outward and forming a convolute with the extreme end extended substantially parallel with the wall of the tube and Within said convolute, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
REED H. BROWNE. Witnesses:
