IMPROVEMENT IN NAPKlN-HCLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 187,649, dated February 20, 1877; application filed October30, 1876.
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM F. LEWIS and ROBERT T. LATTIN, both of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved N apkinHolder; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
Our invention has for its object a convenient and tasteful napkin-holder, which is a substitute for a napkin-ring, in holding a napkin when placed upon a table for use, and is also a convenient and efficient means for attaching the napkirrto the dress at the throat of a person using such napkin, as a covering and protection for the dress while eating.
It consists in a base to which is attached a hook extending over the base, and provided with an interposed attaching device, the Whole arranged in such manner that it can be used both as a substitute for a napkin-ring to hold the napkin when folded or rolled, and to hold and attach the napkin to the dress at the throat of the wearer when the napkin is unfolded and extended.
Figure l in the accompanying drawing represents our improved napkin holder as holding afolded napkin. Fig. 2 represents the holder fastened to the throatof apersons dress, and holding a napkin to protect the dress. Figs. 3 and 4 are, respectively, a central vertical section of the napkin-holder, and an in side view of the same, with a portion of the hook broken away, to show the attaching device interposed between the base of the holder and the hook thereof.
A, Figs. 1 and 2, represents the napkin,and B the napkin -holder.. The napkin may be held at the corner, as shown in Fig. 2, or otherwise held by a spring-clasp, c h 'i k, Figs. 3 and 4. The body cof the said spring-clasp is pivoted at h to the base f of the hook g, said book 9 and base f forming a holder for the napkin when folded, the holding of the said folded napkin being also assisted by the spring clasp interposed between said base and said book. The napkin is clasped between the points it of said spring-clasp and the base f of the holder, said points being pressed upon said napkin by the spring is, interposed between said base and the body 0 of the clasp.
The napkin, attached to the holder as described, is suspended at the throat of the wearer by placing the hook 9 over the collarband, as shown in Fig. 2.
