Be it known that I, DUNCAN G. Cum-am, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manistique, in the county of Schoolcraft and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baggage Tag Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention contemplates an improved tag holder for baggage and has as its primary object to provide a device of this character which will be simple, neat, and attractive in appearance, which will efliciently protect the tag against the elements, and so constructed that the tag can not become accidentally displaced or lost.

The invention has as a further object to provide a tag holder of such character that in order to remove the tag therefrom, certain parts of the holder must first be disconnected from each other and wherein the several parts of the holder will be so held in assembled relation, that persons unfamiliar with the holder will find it difficult, if not impossible, to surreptitiously remove the tag.

A still further object of the invention, in this connection, is to provide a single locking stud for holding the several parts of the holder in operative assembled relation, and wherein the said stud will serve as an attaching means for the holder.

Qther and incidental objects will appear as the description proceeds and in the drawing, wherein 1 have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein similar reference characters desi nate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved tag holder applied to a conventional type of valise, Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the parts of the holder detached from each other but in proper relative position, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on an enlarged scale, more particularly showing the internal construction of the holder, Fig. 4 is a trans verse sectional view on an enlarged scale showing the spacing of the several elements of the holder to receive the tag, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the drum of the holder detached and the manner in which a tag may be connected with the drum.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a hollow cylindrical drum 10 which, at its extremities, is provided with radial flanges 11. Fitting over the drum to be supported in concentric spaced relation thereto, is skeleton sleeve which includes spaced

12 and 13 respectively, oined by a transverse web or connecting member 14, the curvature of the web conforming to the curvature of the drum.

12 and 13 are provided with annular flanges 15 surrounding the flanges 11 of the drum in spaced relation to the outer face of the drum to define annular pockets at the ends thereof. Formed in the flanges 15 upon one side of the web 14, are oppositely disposed notches 16. The annular member 12 is open at its outer end, so that the sleeve may be readily slid upon the drum, while the outer end of the annular member 13 is closed and is provided with, a key hole slot 17. Formed in the adjacent flange 15 of the said annular member 13 opposite the larger end of the key hole slot, is a small indentation, or other suitable mark 18.

Arranged to slide freely within the drum 11 is an annular follower 19 provided with a conical socket in its outer face and urged to normally seat against the closed end of the annular member 12 by a helical spring 20. It will be noted that the adjacent end of the drum terminates flush with the sleeve its open end and fitting over the open end of the sleeve is cap 21 having an annular flange surrounding the flange of the annular member 13 of the sleeve and extending longitudinally thereof for a portion of its length. Connecting the cap with the sleeve and engaging in front of the adjacent flange 11 of the drum are pins or other suitable fastening devices 22. I

Arranged to detachably fit over the drum is a cylindrical protecting member or casing having a closed end 24, the opposite end the aclret being open to receive the drum. As more particularly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the edge of the jacket at its open end will abut the cap 21 with the jacket rotatably supported upon the flanges 15 of the sleeve of the drum which thus provide bearing flanges for the jacket. Formed in the acket at one end of the sight opening is a notch 27 adapted to be brought into register with the indentation 18 of the sleeve of the drum when the keyhole slots 17 and 25 will also register.

Detachably connecting the jacket with the drum is a locking stud 28 adapted to be re eived within the registering keyhole slots 17 and 25 and provided, at one extremity, with a conical head 29 engaging against the inner face of the closed end of the annular member 12 and fitting within the conical recess formed in the outer face of the follower 19. In this connection, particular attention is directed to the fact that the follower is yieldably urged to engage the stud and will effectually prevent the accidental displacement thereof. The stud 28 is provided, at its outer extremity, with an annular cap 30 having a flat inner face arranged to seat against the closed end 2% of the acket and is provided with a loop receiving a chain or other suitable flexible element 31 carrying a ring 32 at its outer end. 7

The drum 10 is, as will be observed, adapted to receive a tag which has been conventionally shown at 33 in Fig. 5. This tag may be formed from a strip of paper or any other suitable material adapted to receive indicia for identifying the piece of baggage to whichthe holder is to be attached, such as the name and address of the owner. One end of the is inserted through the oppositely disposed slots 16 of the

12 and 13 and is then rolled around the drum until the free end of the tag is disposed beneath the connecting portion 1-l which will then act'to hold the tag in position with the extremities of the tag fitting beneath the annular flanges 15 within the pockets defined thereby. In this connection, it is to be observed that the said flanges thus not only provide bearing flanges for rotatably supporting the jacket, but also act to engage the tag for holding it in position.

After having so engaged the tag with the drum, the jacket is fitted over the drum and the slots 17 and 25 brought into register. The chain 31 may then be looped around the handle of an article of baggage as conventionally illustrated in Fig. 1 and the stud 28 passed through the ring 32 for connecting l he stud is then engaged within the keyhole slots and moved into locking position therein with the follower 19 engaging the stud. In this manner, the device may be readily attached, and

- by grasping the jacket 23 with one hand and turning the cap 21 with the other, the drum may be easily rotated within the jacket to bring the indicia upon the tag 33 to position opposite the sight opening 26 where it may be easily observed. In this connection, attention is directed to the fact that the connecting portion 1% of the sleeve carried by the drum is of a width slightly greater than the width of the sight opening so that the said connecting portion may be moved to position to normally close the sight opening ing terminal for the holder, persons unfamiliar with the mechanism thereof, wlll find it difiicult, if not impossible, to disconnect the parts of the holder and surreptitiously remove the tag. However, the tag may be easily removed byv the owner by simply rotating the drum 10 until the indentation 18 is brought opposite the notch 27. The keyhole slots 17 and 25 will then register, when the stud 28 may be readily attached. In this connection, I desire to emphasize the importance and advantage in providing the follower 19. This follower, in being yieldably urged to engage the head 29 of the locking stud, will, under ordinary circumstances, as previously stated, main-V tain the stud firmly in position to prevent its accidental disengagement and will also act to take up any wear upon the head of the stud, so that it will not rattle or become loose.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat.- ent is: V

1. A device of the character described including adrum, a casing rotatable upon the drum and provided with a sight opening,

a locking member connecting the casing with the drum, and yieldable means engaging the locking member for holding it in active position. j

A device of the character described in cluding a hollow drum, a casing surrounding the drum and rotatably mounted theron, the casing being provided with a sight opening, a locking member connecting the casing with the drum, and means arranged within the drum and shiftable axially there of to engage said locking member for hold= ing it in active position.

3. A device of the character described ineluding a hollow drum, a casingsurrounding the drum and rotatably mounted thereon, the casing being provided with a sight opening, a locking member connecting the casing'with the drum and extending axially of the drum, and a follower arranged within the drum and yieldably urged to engage the locking member for holding it in active position.

A device of the character described including a drum, flanges surrounding the drum at its extremities and arranged in spaced relation to the drum, the said flanges being adapted to engage a tag wound upon the drum, a casing surrounding the drum and rotatably mounted upon said flanges, the casing being provided with a sight opening, and a locking member connecting the casing with the drum.

5. A device of the character described including a drum, a casing surrounding the drum and rotatably mounted thereon, the casing being closed at one end and provided with a sight opening, and a locking member engaging through the closed end of the easing for detachably connecting the casing with the drum, the said locking member providing an attaching terminal.

6. A device of the character described including a drum, annular members surrounding the drum at the extremities thereof, the said annular members being provided with flanges and being joined by a connecting portion cooperating with the said members to support the said flanges in posit on spaced from the drum, the said flanges belng adapted to engage a tag wound upon the drum beneath said connecting portion, and a casing rotatably mounted upon the drum and provided with a sight opening closable by said connecting portion.

7. A device of the character described including a drum provided with radial flanges at its extremities, annular members having flanges supported in spaced relation to the drum by said first mentioned flanges, the flanges of the annular members being adapted to engage a tag wound upon the drum, and a casing surrounding the drum and rotatably mounted upon said last mentioned flanges, the casing being provided with a sight opening.

8. A device of the character described including a drum having a closed end provided with a slot, a casing surrounding the drum and rotatably mounted thereon, the casing being provided with a sight opening and having a closed end provided with a slot adapted to register with said first mentioned slot, and a locking member engaging in said slots for connecting the casing with the drum, and means carried by the drum.

9. A device or" the character described including a hollow drum provided at its eX- tremities with radial flanges, annular members surrounding the flanges and extending longitudinally of the drum in spaced relation thereto to form annular pockets at the ends of the drum, the said annular members being joined by a connecting portion and having notches formed therein leading into said pockets, the said pockets being adapted to receive opposite margins of a tag wound upon the drum and inserted through said notches, and a casing rotatably mounted upon said annular members and provided with a sight opening closable by said connecting portion.

10. A device of the character described including a drum, a protecting member rotatably mounted thereon and provided with a sight opening, and a combined attaching and locking member connecting the protecting member with the drum.

11. A device of the character described including a drum, a protecting member carried thereby and provided with a sight opening, and a locking member frictionally engaged at its inner extremity for holding the said locking member in active position connecting the said protecting member with the drum.

12. A device of the character described including a drum, a protecting member rotatably mounted thereon and provided with a sight opening, a locking member connecting the said protecting member with the drum, and means frictionally engaging the locking member for holding the said memher in active position.

13. A device of the character described including a drum, a protecting member carried thereby and provided with a sight opening, the said member and the drum being provided with registering slots, a locking member engaging the said slots and connecting the protecting member with the drum, and means carried by the drum and engaging in the locking member for holding the said locking member in active position.

14. A device of the character described including a drum, a protecting member rotatably mounted thereon and provided with a sight opening, and a locking member having a stud connecting the protecting member with the drum with the said stud concealed by the body of the locking member.

15. A device of the character described including a drum, a protecting member carried thereby, a locking member having a stud connecting said protecting member with the drum, the said stud being shiftable laterally to release the protecting memher, and means engaging the stud for normally holding the said stud against lateral movement.

16. A device of the character described including a drum, a protecting member carried thereby, a locking member having a stud connecting the protecting member with the drum, and a follower arranged within the drum to engage said stud for normally holding the said stud in active position.
