CARD-HOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR PENCILS.

To all whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, ALONZO B. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fairmont, in the county of Marion and 'State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Card-Holding Attachment for Pencils, of which the following 1s a description.

My invention relates to aV card holding deviceand more particularly to means for holding an identification card such for example as a lodge card, or that of an oflicer or enlisted man in the Army or Navy, a though 'the device may be employed for use in holding a calendar sheet or the like. ypThe general object of the invention isto provide means applicable to a tubular 1nterior element of a pencil or equuvalent cylindrical element to hold a card inrrolled form and housed within the case, my novel device having the advantage that the flexible card may be quickly secured at one end to the tubular element to be rolled thereon, while a restraining band forming part of the device is adapted to be slipped onto the rolled card to restrain the same against unrolling, and permitting of the card to be snugly housed within the pencil casing while preserving in the latter its normal appearance.

Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.

held in a lead tube 11 at the front of a tubular element 12, the rear end of which is in rigid relation to a head 13, forming the rear end of the pencil. @A removable case 141 receives the front end of the head 13 and through the front end of -which casethe lead A ments 15, 16 `and within the cylindrical` surfaces thereof, a flexible card A is adapted to be rolled, said cardy being-adapted to receive the name and any other data desired.

` Loosely surrounding the zone 16 1s a band 17 preferably of unbroken continuity which is adapted to be slipped over the rolled card as indicated at Fig. 2. The rolled card forms part of the same cylindrical surface with the collar 15 and zone 16 and the band 17 may vbe readily slipped from the zone 16 Onto the rolled card or from the card to the said zone 16 to permit the card to be readily unrolled as in Figs. 3 and 1 for reading. In order to hold the inner end of the card to the tube 12 or like cylindrical element, I provide a clip or clips 18 of semi-circular form and resilient to adapt them to be sprung onto the tube 12 and engage the edge of the card. The tube 12 is formed exteriorly with a longitudinal rib 19 extending substan tially from the collar 15 to the zone 16, and with the clips 18 in place and clamping the card, the clips are constrained to turn with the turning of the head 13 and tube 12, no relative turning of the clips being permitted because the ends thereof adjacent to the rib 19 will engage the latter and the clips thus be arrested in their turnin movement. The said rib has but slight projection beyond the cylindrical surface of the tube 12 and should the clips rise onto said rib the eii'ect will be only to expand the clips slightly and place them under a greater tension to have a better gripping action on the paper of the card and resist any tendency to turn.

The clips, it is to be noted, are engageable with the cylindrical surface of the tube 12 On-said tube 12 between the shoulders presented bythe eleto exert a holding action thereon independently of the rib 19 and are turnable on said cylindrical surface inv either direction inV adjusting and alining theicard, the said rib aeting solely as a stop to limit the turning movement of the clips.

In a card holding means of the class described,ia'cylindrical element on which the card may be rolled7 a longitudinal rib thereon, and an arcuate clip adapted to be sprung onto said element or removed therefrom to clamp or release the inner edge of the card, saidgclip beingadapted to embrace said element for more than half its circumference and being turnable on the cylindrical surfac'eof said element in either direction relatively to said rib, said rib being adapted to obstruct the turning 'of said clip on said element'. l 2. A card holding means ofthe class described comprising a casing, a cylindrical element in said casing on which the card Vmay be Wound, resilient clips embracing said cylindrical element for more Vthan 180o and embracing the inner edge of .the card Yto clamp the latter by the resiliency; `of the clips, said clips being turnable on said cylindrical element to adjust and aline the card,

and stopmeans rigid on said cylindrical element and limiting the turning movement of said clips in either direction.
