Description

UNITED STATES WILLIAM O. HIOKOK, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RULlNG-PENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,272, dated June 24, 1873; application filed April 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. HIoKoK, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ruling-Pens and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of metal ruling-pens, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a side View of my improved ruling-pen.
A Arepresent the upper parts, and B B the points of my ruling-pens. The upper part A is made of heavier brass, and cut or struck up in one machine, forming a base-plate with one or more fingers, while the point B is made of thinner brass of the same thickness throughout, and made or struck up on another machine, with an enlargement or socket formed at the upper end to slip over the ends of the fingers of the part A, after which the two parts are soldered together, so that at the top is a very stiff part,'and the lower part much thinner, making a fine point. As the lower part B is of uniform thickness the pen will be the same till used up to the base.
The usual ruling-pens are made of heavy brass, with one end ground or cut down, and cannot at the point be of the uniform thickness all the way up, as the brass must be unequal all the way; while in my pen, it being made in two parts, the point is of the same thickness throughout.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- T he Within-described ruling-pen, consisting of thepart A, composed of the plate and the short fingers, made of one piece of thick metal, and the points B B, made of thin metal, provided with sockets at their inner ends, which slip over and are soldered to the ends of the fingers of the part A, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of April, 1873.
