WILLIAM O. HIOKOK AND ALBERT COOPER, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYL- VANIA; SAID COOPER ASSIGNOR TO SAID HIGKOK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-STABBING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,147, dated May 30, 1876; application filed May 10, 1876. y
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, W. O. HIGKOKand ALBERT COOPER, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stabbing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a stabbinginachine, as used by book-binders, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enableothers skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construetio'ii and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front View of the stabbingrnachine head embodying ourinvention. Figs. 2 and 3 are crosssections of the same through the lines no as and y y, respectively. Fig. 4. is a detached view of parts thereof.
A represents the head of the stabbing-machine, provided with the shank or arm B, which is placed in suitable guides, so as to have a vertical reciprocating motion. The head A is slotted or grooved longitudinally from its lower edge upward for a suitable dis tance, and in the groove thus formed are placed the needles 0 G, division-plates D D, and the bar G. The needles 0 O are of the usual construction, and provided across their upper ends with a groove, a, as shown in Fig. 4. Between these needles are placed the division-plates D D, of any suitable length, so as to bring the needles any desired distance apart. These plates are also grooved on the front side,-near the top, to form with the grooves a in the needles one continuous In front of the needles and division plates is then placed the bar G, which has on its rear side, near the top, alongitndinal rib or tongue, b, whichlies in the groove formed on the needles and divisiomplates. This bar or plate G is held to the front portion of the head A by means of a screw, d, at each end, passing through a recess in the head, as shown inFig. 3. In this recess, around the screw d, is a spiral spring, i, the action of which is to draw the plate Gr away from the needles and division-plates; but there is not room in the head to entirely remove the tongue or rib b from the groove 0!, and hence the needles and division-plates will not fall out, but can be moved easily laterally toward either end of the head. The bar or plate G is pressed down, to hold the needles and division-plates firmly in position, by means of set-screws h h, as shown. As soon as these set-screws are loosened the springs i 1 at' once draw the bar or plate Gr outward, so that the needles and division-plates may be changed without trouble.
Having thus fully described our invention,
what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the grooved or slotted head A, of the needles 0 and divisionplates D, having grooves a, as described, the plate or bar G, having tongue or rib b, and the set-screws h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The set-screws d cl and the springs i i, in combination with the bar G and recessed head A, substantially asand for the purposes herein set forth.
' In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 27th day of April, 1876.
