TYPE CASTING AND COMPOSING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 12, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN SELLERS BAN- CROFT and MAURITZ C. INDAHL, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type Casting and Composing Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and'to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention relates to means for guiding and supporting successive type as delivered from the type carrier to the channel in which the line is set up, preliminary to its transfer to the galley, and it has for its principal objects to prevent rotation and falling of the type while in transit from the carrier to the line or line support, and to protect the flexible sustaining jaws or latches from injury by displaced type in the carrier.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, the novel features whereof are specified in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating a preferred form of embodiment of said invention; Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a type casting and composing machine with the improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a section on line wm, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the line channel blocks with their type sustaining jaws; Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the fixed housing, nick-rib plate and type sustaining jaw, the parts being shown detached and separated; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the assembled fixed housing, nick-rib plate and jaw; Fig. 6 is a perspective viewof the adjustable block housing and associated jaw, the parts being detached and separated; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the assembled adjustable block housing and'type sustaining jaw.
The same numerals designate like parts in the several views.
The invention is illustrated as applied to the galley mechanism of Patent No. 674,37 5, dated May 21, 1901, whereof 1 is the cross block of the mold; 2 the type carrier; 3 the ejector blade; 4 the line channel; 5 the adjustable block at one side the entrance to the line channel; 6 the housing supported in block 5 and carrying one of the guiding and sust-aining'jaws 7; and 8 the fixed, but detachable, housing carrying a similar guiding and sustaining jaw. Each jaw 7 is provided with two parallel ribs 9 terminating in shoulders 10 atone end, and beveled at the other or inner end, 11.6., that next the carrier, and said jaws are sustained under elastic pressure with their ribs opposed and projected into the line channel at the entrance thereof. The type carrier is arranged to reciprocate with the cross-block transversely of the line channel and, in addition, is permitted a slight vertical motion independently of said cross-block; it is, moreover, provided with clamping devices for sustaining the type during translation from a point opposite the mold to one opposite the line channel, said clamping devices opening antomatically to receive the type as ejected from the mold, and again to permit the discharge of the type therefrom into the line channel. The side of the type carrier next the jaws 7 is also slotted to receive the inner extremities of the latter as the carrier moves into position to discharge the contained type into the channel. In addition to its sustaining jaws, the entrance to the line channel is furnished on one side with a nick receiving rib 11 serving as an additional means for supporting the type against accidental displacement, for it is of the utmost importance that the types shall be delivered and added to the line in the same relation in which they are cast.

As it was of advantage to construct the jaws on the interchangeable plan, the slots for the reception of the stems of opposing jaws were located in differentplanes, the one above and the other below the nick rib 11. Notwithstanding the apparently ample safeguard thus provided for preventing accidental. displacement of the type in its passage into the line channel, it was found, in practice, more especially when operating upon the very thin type, that occasionally one would be partially rotated about its longitudinal. axis, while in transit, resulting either in the falling down of such type or such a change in the length of line as to bring into action the automatic stop mechanism when it was attempted to deliver the line to the galley. One cause of this defective action was traced to sustaining aws 7, and to the manner of supporting the same in ditferent planes, whereby the ribs were permitted to yield unequally through a tersional movement of their stems, that one of the ribs exerting the maximum degree of pressure on one side of the type being opposed by the rib on the other side exerting minimum degree of pressure, hence there was created a tendency to rotate the type about its longitudinal axis during the advance of the ejector. Another source of trouble was the exposed position occupied by the inner ends of the jaws. If, from any cause, such as the premature or too wide opening of the clamping devices, the type in the carrier became displaced so as to pro ject across the openings for the passage of the jaws, the further movement of the carrier would cause said displaced type to impinge against the exposed ends of the jaws with si :ient force to bend or break the latter. blow the presentinvention is designed to obviate or overcome these minor but nevertheless annoying and material defects, and to provide an improved equipment for this part of the organized machine. With these ends in view the line channel face of the block or housing 8 is grooved longitudinally for the reception of a cover plate or bar 12 carrying on one face the nick rib 11, said plate being grooved on its inner face, as at 13, for the accommodation of the shank of one of the aws 7. One end of bar 12 is slotted, as at 1st, for the reception of the sustaining jaw, and said bar is secured in position by suitable fastenings, such as rivets 15.
The interchangeable jaws 7 are each formed of a straight strip of s1 ring metal of uniform width and provided at one end with parallel type sustaining ribs 9 on one face along the margins thereof, and at the opposite end with an off-set or hearing 16 adapted to seat upon the bottom of the groove in housing 8, where it is detachably secured, as by a screw bolt 17 passing through said housing and threaded into an aperture in said oft-set 16. thus const-ructed and arranged the type supporting ribs 9 are symmetrically disposed with relation to their supporting shank, and the pressure exerted by the spring shank is equally distributed. The housing 8 is, moreover, provided with a guard for the exposed end of the aw in the form of an extension or rib 18 of substantially the same thickness as the jaw, and adapted, like the latter, to traverse the groove in the carrier, and, to accommodate it to the diagonal motion of the carrier, said guard rib is formed at a corresponding inclination, as is one corner 19 of the sustaining jaw. It is obvious that a displaced type contained in the carrier during its approach to the line channel will impinge upon and be arrested or broken by guard 18 without injury to jaw 7. A similar guard 18 is applied to or for ned upon the housing 6 mounted in the adjustable line channel block 5. This housing 6 is provided with a longitudinal groove 20 in its line channel face and with ears 21 serving as limiting stops for the sustaining jaw 7, the latter corresponding and being interchangeable with the jaw applied to the opposed stationary housing or block 8.
The inner end of housing 5 is cut away on opposite sides, as at 22 for the accommodation of the line hooks, and housing 8 and plate 12 are recessed on their parting lines, forming grooves 23 for the accommodation of the points of the line hooks to insure the latters engagement with the last type of the line as assembled in the line channel, the bottoms of said grooves 23 being inclined at the outer ends or those most remote from the carrier, and merging into the wall of the line channel.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a type assembling device or mechanism, provided with a line channel and a grooved type carrier, the latter reciprocating transversely of the line channel, and in combination therewith, a yielding jaw at the entrance to the line channel and projecting into the groove or way in the carrier, and a fixed guard located to one side of said jaw and extending into the groove of the carrier.
2. In a type assembling device or mechanism provided with a line channel the entrance whereof is equipped on opposite sides with yielding type sustaining jaws and guards projecting beyond said line channel, and in combination therewith, a type carrier reciprocating transversely of the line channel and recessed for the passage of said jaws and guards, and an ejector for discharging a contained type from the carrier between said jaws into the line channel.
3. In a type assembling device or mechanism such as described, the combination with the reciprocatory type carrier, ejector, and line channel, of a pair of opposed type sustaining jaws, located at the entrance to the line channel, each of said jaws being provided with parallel sustaining ribs symmetrically disposed on or near opposite edges of a flat spring metal body portion.
4. In a type assembling device or mechanism such as described, and in combination with the line channel thereof, a pair of opposed type sustaining jaws located at the entrance to the line channel and each provided at one end with parallel type sustaining ribs symmetrically disposed at or near opposite edges of its flat spring-metal body portion, one wall of said line channel being provided with a nick-receiving rib and a recess in rear thereof for the reception of the body portion of the associated jaw.
5. A type assembling device or mechanism such as described provided with a line assembling channel and opposed yielding type sustaining jaws at the entrance thereto, whereof one wall of said channel is recessed longitudinally for the reception of the shank of the associated jaw, and provided with a cover plate equipped with a nick-rib in the plane of the shank of said jaw.
