GONSEGUTIVE-NUMBERING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES SPIELMANN and FRANK W. WIGHT, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Consecutive-Numbering Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved consecutive numbering apparatus, provided with a plurality of sets of numbering wheels actuated simultaneously and of which any set may be placed in print in either a transverse or a lengthwise direction, and the sets may be adjusted nearer to or farther from each other and quickly fastened in the adjusted position.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a plan view of the improvement, parts of the plunger and main frame being broken out; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 33 of Fig. l Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the main frame.
The main frame A, carrying a plurality of sets of numbering devices B, B, is preferably made in rectangular shape and consists of the ends A, A and the side bars A A rigidly connecting the ends A, A with each other. The ends A, A are provided with vertical guideways A for the ends of the plunger C to slide in, the said plunger being pressed upwardly by springs D interposed between the bottom of the plunger 0 and the bottom flange A of the side bar A as plainly shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. The upward movement of the plunger C is limited by stop pins E projecting transversely from the plunger 0 into vertical elongated slots A formed in the side bar A as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The plunger 0 is provided at its ends with projections C adapted to be engaged by a movable part of the printing press or other machine on which the numbering apparatus is applied, so that the plunger C is periodically pressed downward against the tension of the springs D. When the movable part of the printing press releases the plunger C then the latter is immediately returned to its normal raised position by the action of the springs D, and in doing so the numbering wheels of the said sets of numbering devices B, B are actuated.
The plunger C is provided at its inner face with a lengthwise-extending groove C into which project the actuating members for the numbering devices B and B, said actuating members being in the form of pins F and G, of which the pin F is secured on a slide F connected with a pawl frame H for actuating the numbering wheels I in the usual manner, the slide F being mounted to slide up and down in the casing J of the numbering device B. The pin G for the other numbering device B is mounted directly on a pawl frame H for actuating the numbering wheels I of the numbering device B, and as the construction of the said pawl frames H and H and their con nections with the numbering wheels I and I are a very well known type, further detail description of the same is not deemed necessary, it being sufficient to state that when the plunger C moves downward the pawl frames H and H are on the non-acting stroke, and when the plunger C moves upward by the action of its springs D, then the pawl frames H and H actuate the numbering wheels I and I in the usual manner.
The casings J and J for the numbering devices B and B are provided with dovetail grooves J 2 engaging the correspondingly shaped side A of the main frame A, and each groove J has its bottom member J integral with the casing J or J, while the top member J forms a clamping member and is secured by screws J to the casing J or J. Now on loosening the screws J 5 the casing J or J can be readily moved lengthwise on the side A of the main frame A until a desired position is reached, and then the screws J are screwed up to cause the member J to securely clamp C it is evident that the casings J and J of the numbering devices can be readily moved along the side A without disengaging the actuating members F and G from the plunger groove 0 By reference to Figs. 3 and 4, it will be noticed that the numbering wheels I and I stand at right angles one to the other, that is, the axis of the numbering wheels I is parallel with the plunger C, while the axis of the num bering wheels I is at a right angle to the plung In order to permit of conveniently removing the numbering device or releasing the same the following arrangement is made: A swing arm K forms a portion of the bottom of the groove 0 (see Figs. 1, 2 and 3) and this swing arm K has its pivot K disposed vertically in the plunger C, and the free end K of the swing arm K is adapted to be taken hold of by the operator with the use of a suitable tool inserted through a recess A formed in the side A Through the use of the tool the operator can swing the arm K outward into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to move the swing arm K out of position as part of the bottom of the groove 0 at the same time uncovering a slot 0 formed in the inner lower portion of the plunger C. This slot C is in vertical alinement with another slot A formed in the flange A of the side A and hence the actuating member F or G can be moved in register with the said slots C A at the time the swing arm K is in open position, so as to allow the casing J or J to be moved downwardly out of the casing, the operator having previously removed the clamping members J It is not absolutely necessary for the side A to extend from one end A to the other end A but only part way from either end, as indicated in Fig. 5.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the numbering devices can be quickly shifted on the main frame A to any desired position without disconnecting the actuating members of the numbering devices from the plunger C, and the numbering devices can be conveniently fastened in place after the de sired adjustment is made, and the numbering wheels may print transversely or lengthwise, as above explained.
Having thus described our invention we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A numbering apparatus, comprising a main frame, a spring-pressed plunger mounted to slide in the said frame, and a plurality of sets of numbering wheels each independently mounted in the frame and having its actuating member engaging the said plunger, one of the sets of numbering wheels having the axis of its numbering wheels arranged transversely, and another set having the axis of its numbering wheels arranged longitudinally relative to the frame.
2. A numbering apparatus, comprising a main frame having one of its side bars beveled at top and bottom, and a numbering device having its casing provided in one side with a dovetail groove receiving the said bar, the upper wall of the groove being separate from the casing and forming a clamping member, and means for securing the clamping member in position, whereby the numbering device may be adjusted and held in the position to which it has been adjusted by said clamping member. a
3. A numbering apparatus, comprising a main frame having its ends provided with guideways, a plunger mounted to slide in the saidguideways and provided with a groove extending lengthwise of the plunger, springs interposed between the said plunger and one side of the said frame, and a numbering device mounted to slide on the other side of the said frame and having its actuating member extending into the said plunger groove, the latter having a portion of its bottom movable, and the plunger and the frame side adjacent to the plunger being provided with grooves registering with the said movable bottom portion.
4. A numbering apparatus provided with a plunger having a groove for engagement by the actuating member of a set of numbering wheels, a portion of the bottom wall of the groove being hinged to permit it to be swung to one side to form an opening for the passage of the said actuating member to and from the groove.
5; In a numbering apparatus, a frame having an opening in one side wall, a plunger mounted to slide in the frame and provided with a horizontal groove for the reception of the actuating member of a numbering device, and a movable member forming a por tion of the bottom of the groove of the plunger and arranged opposite the opening of the frame, whereby provision is made for removing the numbering device.
6. In a numbering apparatus, a frame, a plunger mounted to slide vertically in the frame and provided with a horizontal groove for the reception of the actuating device of a numbering device and with a vertical groove, and a movable member forming a part of the bottom of the horizontal groove of the plunger and arranged above the vertical groove.
7. In a numbering apparatus, a frame having an opening in one slde, a plunger mounted to slide in the frame and having a horizontal groove for receiving the actuating member of a numbering device, and a pivoted member forming a portion of the bottom of the said groove and adapted to swing out through the opening of the frame.
