Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIJAH A. ANDREWS, 0F NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
lNlPROVED SNAP-HOOK.
Specification forming part ot' Letters Patent No. 55,219, dated June 5, 1866.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAI-I A. ANDREWS, of New Britain, county ot' Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in SnapAHooks, and to with those now in use, owing to the exposed length ot'latch back from the hook-point, which objection by the use of this improvement is entirely removed, because only sufficient space is provided between the hook-point and the body of the hook to admit the size of a bitring, Ste., into thel hook-space. y
In the accompal'lying drawings is shown a sectional view of this improvement. a is the body o't the hook. b is the hook proper. c is the strap-loop. d is a recess formed in the body betweenthe hook b and the loop o in the back side. c is a latch which is tted into said recess so as to nearly or quite lill the space g, provided to receive the bit-ring, Ste., into the hook, and is hung or secured by a pin or rivet, h, just forward ot' the strap-loop c. Said latch is provided with a nager-pacht, just back of its fulcrum-pin, and is undcrlaid with a press ure-spring, n, which acts to reclose the latch at'ter it has been opened by the pressure of' the finger upon the pad t'. This latch is finished on the outside even with the body of the hook, so as to give a good symmetrical appearance.
I believe I have thus shown thenature, construction, and advantage of this improvement so as to enable others skilled to make and use the same.
I claim- The combination of the latch c, within and tlush with the back ot the recess d relative to the opening g, with the pad t', spring fn, and
loop c, substantiallyY as and for the purpose described.
ELIJAH A.. ANDREWS. [L, s] Witnesses:
R. H. NUGENT, .JEREMY W. Buss.
