Description
EDWARD A; coornafor BUFFALO; NE'WQYORK.
Letters Patent No. 79,107, dated June 23, 1868,
IMPROVED-HARNESSsNAP;
site rlgnal referat tu in ttes sttets @aient mit mitingfnnt at time,
To .ALL WHoM 1r MAY coNcnRNe f y y Be it known that I, EDWARD A. COOPER, of thefcity ofBuiialo, county of Erie, and State of New York,
t have invented acertain new and improved Harness-Snap; and Ildo hereby declare that'thefollowing is a full and exact descriptionthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making'a part of this specication, in which- Figure Iis a side elevation of myimproved harness-synap, the two parts of which itis composed being shown separate. v A Y 'FigurepII is also a side elevationv of the saine, said parts being shown as connected. Figure IVII is agtop view of the same. The nature .of this invention consists First, in a hollow chamber, one side of which is formed by the main shank of the snap-hook, and the other' side by the tongue thereof, andwhich chamber contains the'spring.4
i Second, inl hingingthe tongue of the snap in the centre, and providing the rear end ofthe same with a lug, which projects into the said chamber, and against which theend of the spring rests. l Third, in a thumb-piece projecting sidewisefrom the extreme end of the tongue, in close proximity'rt'o the hook, for the purpose hereinafter described.
ends of the main body B. A hollow chamberis formed between this art B and the tongue C, the latter being made in the shape of a fiat plate, and fitting on to the side ofthe part B, like the cover of a box. A s'crew or rivet, d, passes through both partsB, and C, c'onnectihg'them together, and at the same time forming the fulcruni upon which the tongue oscillates. 4
Erepresents a at metallic spring, whichis placed within the hollow chamber, one end being secured to the part B in any convenient manner, and the other free end bent semicir'cular, and bearing against a lug, g, projecting from the part The Iocationrand operation of the spring may be reversed by connectingl one" end thereof to the part C, and forming the lug g upon the part B,butI prefer the first above described construction of 'my improved harness-snap.
It ,will beseen that the fulcrum of ,the tongue is located in the centre instead of one end thereof, by which means the tongue is made .al twoarmcd`lever, one armclosing the hoolcA andthe other carrying thelug y, for
the purpose/above stated.- The fulcrum being nearer the end of the tongue which closes the hook, gives that end a shorter and less movement, so. that it'can he removed'fromthe'end ofthe hook quicker than if the fnlcrum were farther distantfrom the end, For -the purpose of hendincr or operating the tongue C, I provide a thumbpiece, Vla., which .projects sidewise fromthe extreme end of the tonge, as shown in Fig. II. `By mea-ns of this thumb-piece, the operator is enabled .to move the tenglieentirey out of the way oiA the hook,=without obstructing with his thumb the opening `required i'or disengaging snap-hook from 'thel ring or other 4part of the harness to which' itis' attached.
The spring used in connection with a harness-snap1o`f this construction may be of inferior quality `than those to be found in-other snap-hooks, and-my improved construction renders this invention a moredurable and mnvenient article, and'superior to all the snap-hooksnow intcommon use.A K 4 I i What I claim as my invention, anddcsire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` The arrangement, with the main body, of the hook constructed with a. Hat. plate, and inwardly-projeating lug g, and an outwardly-projecting thumb-piece, 71 and a Hat spring, E, one end of which is secured to the lug, whiclrreceives thescrew in the main body,'and the other end bears against the. lug g, and having an entirely closed chamber for the spring, as herein described.
EDWARD A. COOPER'.f`
