Be it known that I, DANIEL F. DALTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of'NewI-Iaven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and. exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in buckles, and particularly to that type which include a plate and a lever pivotally connected therewith, the lever being adapted to be turned so as to hook through a loop or other device, such buckles being commonly used on overshoes, rubber coats, and

other places where a firm fastening is required, and in which the members may be readily separated.

The object of the invention is to employ a Wire spring with a tongue bearing upon the lever, whereby the lever is held in the open or closed position; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims. r

In carrying out my invention, I employ a body-member or plate 7 struck up from sheet metal and formed in its rear end with a slot 8 by which the buckle may be secured in place, although any form of attaching means may be employed. In the outer end of the plate is a rectangular notch 9 and in the face of the plate on opposite sides of the notch are trunnion bearings 10 to receive trunnions 11 formed integral with the lever 12, the trunnions being held in their seats by flanges 13 turned over from the sides of the plate, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Secured to the plate by integral lugs 14 and 15 is a wire spring 16 the central portion of which is bent to form a tongue 17 which projects forward and bears upon the lip 18 of the lever 12, which lip is formed with a clearance opening 19 for the end of the tongue. When the parts are in the closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, this tongue bears upon the underside of the lip. When the lever is turned to the open position, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, this tongue bears upon the upper face of the lip.

It will be noted, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, that when the lever is turned to the open position, one face of the lip 18 bears against the rear wall 20 of the notch 9, and the extent to which the lever may be opened may be varied by cutting the notch 9 inward to a greater or less extent.

Instead of having the tongue of the spring bear upon the under face of the lip when in the closed position, the tongue may be struck outward, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings, so as to bear upon the upper face of the lip when in the closed position, and upon the under face of the lip when in the open position. In this case the notch 9 will be extended to form a clearance opening 21 for the tongue; and in this construction it is unnecessary to form the lever with the clearance opening 19 for the end of the tongue. It is obvious as also shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, that the lugs 14 at the sides of the frame may be omitted, and the spring held in place by the single lug 15 which in turned over the ends of the spring.

I claim 1. A buckle comprising a body member formed. in its outer end with a notch and with trunnion bearings at opposite sides of said notch, said body also formed with flanges turned over the said trunnion bearings, a lever comprising a'lip and trunnions, the lever formed at the junction of the lip with a clearance opening, and a wire spring conuectedwith the rear of the body member and formed with a forwardly projecting tongue extending through the said clear ance opening and bearing upon the lip of the lever and tending to hold the lever in its open or closed position.
