Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFC.
AMOS WESTGOTT, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
DOOR-BOLT.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 17,464,'dated June 2, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMos WEs'rcoTT, of the city of Syracuse, county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Bolts, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which constitute a part of this specification.
My invention consists essentially in the hereinafter described method of supporting and guiding the inner end of a mortise bolt, by connecting it with the shaft of a knob, by which arrangement, I am enabled to dispense with any outer casing, or frame work for the purpose of either sustaining or guiding the said rear or inner end of the bolt.
rlhe following is a description of the several parts of this device, and the ends they respectively serve" lst. The face plate A is made with a socket B B projecting toward, and nearly to the center of the door. Through this socket, the knob shaft C works, and it being firmly screwed to the door serves as the basis of all the movable parts, but when a knob is used upon both sides of the door, or when the bolt is used as a mortise catch, the socket B, B, above described, may be dispensed 3d. The cog wheel E is made fast to the knob shaft C, so as to be in contact with the inner end of the socket B B and thus prevent the knob from being drawn out or moved endwise. At a point in the knob shaft, corresponding to t-he center of the door there is cut a neck or groove F, which is so fitted to the slot G, in the bolt H, as to support it in every direction, and to guide the inner end of the bolt H when it is moved back and forth by the action of the wheel E.
4th. The bolt H is made with'a slot G, which works upon the neck of the lmob shaft C. Upon both sides of the bolt are projecting pins I I to make it right and left, corresponding to, and acted upon by the cogs of the wheel E.
5th. The plate K, is made with a hole fitting the outer end of the bolt H and when screwed to the edge of t-he door L serves to sustain and guide this end of the bolt.
I do not claim any particular method of moving door bolts z-But That I do claim as my invention, and d esire to secure by Letters Patent is- The supporting and guiding of the rear or inner end of the bolt- H, by connecting it with the knob shaft C, substantially in the manner, and for the purpose herein set forth.
AMOS WESTCOTT.
