Description

J. E. WHIDDEN.
WINDOW FASTENER- No. 344,888 Patented July 6, 1886.
WITNEEEEE- INVENTUFV 7 6mm m /Q I v I UNITED STATES PATENT 0mm.
JOSEPH EDWARD WHIDDEN, OF SOUTH ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WINDOW-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344:,888, dated July 6, 1 886.
Application filed April I, 1886. Serial No. 198,142. (No model To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH EDWARD Wirin- DEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Abington, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful 'Window-Fastener, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The objects of my invention are, first, to fasten upper and lower sashes of a window in any position, closed or open, so that, being fastened in such positions, they cannot be moved from the outside; second, to prevent windows in any of the above positions from rattling; third, to lower and raise the upper sash.
Figure 1 represents my invention as applied to a closed window, looking it in that position. Fig. 2 represents the upper sash lowered and the window locked in that position. Fig. 3 represents the lower sash raised and the window locked in that position.
A detailed description is as follows:
In Fig. 1, A is a bar of convenient length and size screwed or other attached to the eye B, which fits loosely around and is movable upon the bolt 0. The bolt 0 is attached at right angles to the face of the plate D, which is screwed or otherwise attached to the upper sash, N. The rod A passes through the bracket E, which is attached to the lower sash, G, and provided with the thumbscrew H, and also passes through the bracket F, attached to the easement K, and provided with the thumbscrew 1. The rod A has a handle or knob, J, at the lower extremity, and notches L M, &c., at convenient intervals, and is marked with a scale. The thumb-screws are intended to be set in these notches, and the scale shows when such notches are directly under the screws. The rod may be made without the notches and scale and still come within my invention.
In applying and using my invention the bracket F is attached to the easement K, as in Fig. l, by screws or otherwise, the bracket E to the lower sash, G, and the plate D to the upper sash, N. The eye B adjusting itself on the bar 0, the red A assumes a perpendicular position. Set the thumb-screws H and I, and the window is fastened as in the position represented in Fig. 1. Loosen the thumb-screws H and I, and lower the upper sash by drawing down upon thehandle J to any desired position. The rod A, sliding through the brackets E and F, takes the position as represented in Fig. 2. Set the thumb-screws, andthe window is fast in that position. Loosen the thumb-screws and raise the lower sash to any desired height. The bracket E, sliding upon the rod A, takes the position as represented in Fig. 3. Set the thumb'screws H and I, and the window is fast in that-position. In the same way the upper and lower sashes are lowered and raised at the same time and fastened in any desired posi- JOSEPH EDWARD WHIDDEN.
