This invention relates to a door and while it is more especially designed for use on vehicle bodies, it can be used advantageously wherever a hinged door is desirable. y
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a hinged door capableof bodily slidable movement relative to its hinge whereby, when the door is closed, it can be shifted into a channel in thedoor frame and thereby held in place without the use ofthe usual latch or bolt.
Another obj ect isto provide the door with `an operating handle or the lileby means of .which the door can be retracted from itsre- `taining channel and subsequently opened.
A. further object is to provide a door o f this type which, when swung to closed position, will release a mechanism for sliding the `door into its retaining channel.
`With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinaftertdescribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein vdisclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

` The door6 is hollow and has an arcuate side portion 7 adapted to be seated in channel 2 y while the opposite sideof the door is tapered as at 8 so as to iit snugly in the channel 4 when the door is closed. The width of the door is such that when the `arcuate side 7 is in contact with the arcuate wall 3 of channel 2, the tay pered side 8 of the door is fully retracted 6U from channel 4 so that the door can thus be swung outwardly relative to its frame l. `VVhenthe door is seated in channel 4, however, the opposite side thereof is not fully retracted from channel 2, as will be apparent by referring to Figure 8.
A shaft 9 is journaled in the door 6 near the arcuate side 7 and is provided at each end with a radial ar1n`10 from which a stud 11 is extended. The studs j nrojectupwardly and downwardly respectively through slots `12 formed in the top and bottom of the door and concentric with shaft 9. `The projecting ends of the studs 11 bear in the adjacent portions of frame 1. Thus when the shaft 9 is rotated in one direction its arms 10 will swing about the axes of studs 11 and cause the door 6 to move withthe shaft and within the channels.
To facilitate assembly, shaft 9 can be 80 formed of sectionstelescopically connected, one of the sections having a socket 13 in which is seated one end of the other section, itbeing understood that the two sections are joined in such a manner as to rotate together.
A crank arm 14 is extended from the shaft 9 and is pivotally engaged by a rod 15 in which a plunger 16 is slidably mounted. A collar 17 having an arm 18 is carried by rod 15. A coil spring 19 is mounted on the rod 90 and thrusts at one end against collar 17 and at its other end against a pin 20 or the like carried by the plunger `16.
A lever 21 is pivotally mounted at 22 and is also pivotally connected at 23 to the plunger` 16. This lever has an angular finger 24 which extends over and embraces a cam 25. This cam is secured to and rotates with the stem 26 of a handle`27 located outside of the door.
Assuming that the door is wedged in channel 4 as shown in Figures 1 and 3, it will be apparent that by rotating handle 27 and cam 25 to the left from the position shown in Figure 1 to the position shown in Figure 2, cam 25 will thrust against lever 21 and cause plunger 16, which loosely engages rod 15, to push said rod and swing crank arm 14. Thus shaft 9 will be moved in the direction of the arrow in Figure 3 and as the shaft travels about the axis of the studs 11, the shaft will cause the door to withdraw from channel 4 and move toward and in contact with the arcuate wall 3. lVith the door retracted as described it can be swung open about the axis of the studs.
To insure proper operation of the door it is desirable to provide some means for holding the handle against movement back to normal position until after the door has been closed. For this purpose there is provided a bell crank 28 fulcrumed at 29. A weight 30 is connected to the bell crank by a strap 31 and extending from the bell crank is an arcuate finger 32 concentric with thel pivot 29. A lug 33 extends from the bell crank at the base of finger 32.
- A clutch roller 34 is interposed between linger' 32 and a flat surface 35. Tf desired this surface can be formed by a strap 36 which serves to limit the downward movement of weight 30. Roller 34 has an annular groove 37 adjacent one end which lits loosely in a forked bracket 38.A
An opening 39 is provided in the inner side of the door and contains a slide 40provided with a head 41. A spring 42 serves to hold the head pressed out of the door but when the door is closed this head and its slide are pushed back into the door by a button 43 or other obstruction in the path thereof.
A dog 44 is pivotally mounted on the slide and has a notch 46 in its upper end while its lower end is adapted to project into the path of the lug A spring 47l is connected to 5 the upper end portion of the dog and acts to draw the notched end of said dog against the acent end of roller 34 under certain conditions.
`When the door is fully closed the parts are positioned as shown in Figure 1. To open the door the handle 27 is actuated to swing cam 25 to the left from the position shown in Figure 1 to the position shown in Figure 2 as heretofore explained so as to witlidraw the door from channel 4. During this operation the arm 18 pulls on bell crank 28 and causes linger 32 to move upwardly, at the same time lifting weight 30. The lug 33 comes against the lower end of dog y44 and swings the notched end 46 out of engagement with roller 34 as shown in Figure 4. The roller thus drops slightly so as to wedge between the convex edge of linger 32 and the bearing surface 35. Thus the finger 32 and weight 30 are held against downward movement and the handle 27 cannot be turned back to its initial position. The door is then swung open about the axis of studs 11. As the door moves away from its frame 1 the slide 4() is shifted to the position shown in Figure (i by the spring 42 so that the notched end of the dog will drop into engagement with the lower portion of the end of roller 34.- At the same time the dog will shift out of the path of lug 33.
When the door is slammed shut the head 41 comes against the obstruction 43 and is shifted relative to the door so that the slide will move from the position shown in Figure n G to the position shown in Figure 4. Thus the .dog 44 will exert a toggle or lifting action upon the end of the Vroller 34 and shift it from the position shown in Figure 6. Thus the gripping action of the roller -on finger 32 will be broken and said hn erer will be free to f l5 drop under the action of weight 30. Bell crank 28 will pull through arm 18 on rod 15 and the door be pushed into channel 4.
. l/Vhen the parts are returned to their initial positions as explained and as shown in Figure 1 the door will be held tightly closed. When it is again desired to open a door the handle is again turned, the lug 33 moving upwardly to release the roller while at the same tim-e the door is retracted to the position shown in Figure 2.
Obviously any suitable means can be employed for closing the gap between the door and the wall 3 when the doei' is closed.- For example, a flange 48 can be extended from the door as shown in Figure 3.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a door frame, of a door hingedly mounted therein and slidable transversely of its pivotal axis, cooperating interitting means on the door and frame for holding the door against swinging movement when at one limit of its sliding movement, means carried by the door for holding the door yieldingly at said limit of its sliding movement, and means under the control of the operator for shifting the door transversely of its pivotal axis todisengage said cooperating means and release the door for swinging movement.
2. The combination with a door frame having channels in its opposed sides, of a door hingedly mounted in the frame and slidable transversely of its axis of rotation, yielding means carried by the door for holding one edge thereof seated in one of the channels, and means under the control of an operator for withdrawing said edge from the channel along lines extending across the axis of rotation to release the door for swing movement.
3. The combination with a door frame having a channel in one side, of a door, a hinge connection between the door and frame, said door being slidable transversely of the hinge connection, yielding means carried by the door for holding one edge thereof seated in the channel, and means under the control of y an operator for withdrawing said edge from the channel along lines extending transversely of the hinge connection and against the action of said yielding means to release the door for swinging movement.

The combination with a door frame having a channel in one side, of a door, a hinge connection between the door andthe frame, said door being slidable transversely of the axis of the hinge, yielding means carried by the door for holding one edge thereof seated in the channel, means under the control of an operator for withdrawing said edge from the channel along lines extending transversely of the axis of the hinge and against the action of said yielding `means to release the door for swinging movement, and means for automatically locking the door against sliding movement relative to the frame while in open position.
5. The combination with a door frame having a channel in one side, of adoor, a hinge connection` between the door and the y frame, said door being slidable transversely of the axis of the hinge, yielding means carried by the door for holding one edge thereof seated in the channel, means under the control of an operator for withdrawing said edge from the channel along lines extending transversely of the axis of the hinge and against the action of said yielding means to release the door for swinging movement, `means for automatically looking the door against sliding movement relative to the frame while in open position, and means operated bythe closing of the door for un- 40 locking said door to permit sliding movement under the action of said yielding means.
6. The combination with a, door frame, of
a door movably mounted therein, a shaft ournaled in the door, studs projecting from the door and journaled inthe frame, said studs being carried by the shaft and rotatable about an axis outside of the shaft, an operating element on the door, means actuated by the movement of said element in one direction for imparting a thrust to the shaft to move said shaft and the door about the axis of the studs,ithereby to impart a sliding movement to the door relative to the frame, said door being mounted to swing bodily about ,55 the axis of the studs when slid to one extreme position.
7. Thecombination with a door frame, of a door movably mounted therein, a shaft journaled in the door, studs projecting from the door and journaled in the frame, said studs being carried by the shaft and rotatable about an axis outside of the shaft, an operating element on the door, means actuated by the movement of said element in one direction for imparting a thrust to the shaft to move said shaft and the door about the axis of the studs, thereby to impart a sliding movement to the door relative to the frame, said door being mounted to swing bodily about the axis of the studs when slid to one extreme position, yielding means carried by the ,door for resisting said sliding movement and holding the doornormally pressed toward one side of the frame, and interiitting cooperating means on the door and frame for holding the door against swinging movement while in said normal p0- sition.
8. The combination with a door frame having a channel in one side, of a door hingedlyv and slidably mounted in the frame, yielding means carried by the door for holding one edge thereof` seatedfin the channel, means under the control of an operator for withdrawing said edge from the channel against the action of said yielding means to release the doo-r for swinging movementa clutch for holding the last named means against return movement under the action of said yielding means, and means operated by the shutting ofthe door for releasing the clutch.
9. The combination with a door frame having a channel in one side, of a door hingedly and slidably mounted in the frame, yielding means carried by the door for holding one edge thereof seated in the channel, means under the control of an operator for withdrawing said edge from the `channel against the action of said yielding means to release the door for swinging movement,an arcuate member carried by said withdrawing means and shiftable thereby, a rotatable clutch member for wedging engagement with the arcuate member for holding it against movement in one direction after the door has been shifted from closed position, and means controlled by the shutting of the door for disengaging said clutch member to release the door.
