Description
L. T. MAYEA Dec. 24, 1929.
DOOR LOCK Filed July 21, 1927 I anoentoz Lawls' 771111 31753 Patented Dec. 24, 1929 PATENT FFIE LOUIS T. MAYEA, OF FAIR HAVEN, MICHIGAN DOOR Application filed July 21,
My invention pertains to novel constructions in door latches, preferably for adaption to garage doors and the like, said invention having the object to devise a latch which is simple in construction and inexpensive in manufacture.
A further object of my invention is to devise a latch which with a single movement will cause eccentrically pivoted members to engage suitable abutments and forcibly draw the door to a tightly closed position, overcoming the diiliculty in closing doors which become warped and which will securely latch the door in this closed position.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification in which the characters of reference indicate the corresponding parts throughout the different views in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a side elevation of a door with my device applied thereto and in the latched position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to that of Fig. 1, with the device shown in the unlatched position;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and
Fig. e is an enlarged detail of a latching member.
1 indicates a door having brackets 3 secured thereto at the upper and lower extremities and 2 are latching members pivoted to said brackets and each shaped to form a hook 4: adapted to engage an abutment or catch 5 suitably placed opposite the members 2 on the ceiling or door frame and floor respectively. 6 is a bar pivotally mounted at 11, intermediate its ends on a bracket 7 secured to the door intermediate the top and bottom ends thereof, said bar being provided with an operating lever handle 8. 9 is a rod pivotally connected at 12 tothe upper member 2 adjacent the free end thereoi and to the upper end of the bar 6 at 13, and is a similar rod pivotally connected at 14 to the lower end of the bar 6 and at its lower end to the lower member 2 at 15, adjacent the free end thereof.
LOCK
1927. Serial No. 207,378.
Having now described the principal part involved in my invention, I will now describe the operation of the same.
To open the door, a pull is exerted upon the door by the lever handle 8 and this pull will cause the lever to be swung toward the operator or inwardly from the door and at the same time the bar 6 will throw the members 2 out of engagement with the catches 5 and the door is free to swing open.
To close the door, the door being open 'ith the lever 6 in the position shown in Fig. 2, said door is swung toward the closed position by grasping the handle 8 which is then swung toward the door as the same nears its closed position thereby turning the bar 6 on its pivotand in turn forcing the rods 9 and 10 upwardly and downwardly, respectively and swinging the hooked ends of the members 2 into engagement with the catches 5. By further swinging the latching lever in the same direction the door is then forcibly drawn inwardly by the latching member as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 4 by the cam action of the members engaging the catches. This continued movement of the lever 8 throws it past center, that is, the pivots 13 and let pass to the other side of a vertical plane passing through the pivot 11, thus positively latching the door in a tightly closed position against any possibility of its being opened from the outside, or until the latching bar lever handle is again grasped and turned past center. Due to the cam action of the latching members 2 and the great leverage applied in swinging these members, by the latching bar 6, the device is very easily operated and great force applied to draw the door tightly closed and the throwing of the latching bar pastcenter obviates the necessity for other latching means.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is:
In latching device of the character described, the combination with a hinged door, of hook members, brackets at the upper and lower ends of said door and to which said hook members are pivotally attached, a bar bracket on the door midway the upper and lower ends thereof and projecting from the door, a bar pivotally supported intermediate its ends upon the outer end of the bar bracket and movable in a vertical plane perpendicular to the door, rods connecting the opposite 5 ends of said bar and the free ends of the hook members and an offset handle on the bar for moving the bar on its pivot to operate the hook. members, said bar being movable to place the rod ends connected therewith at either side of the vertical plane through the rod pivot, the hook members having contact faces and keepers for the hook members having faces adapted to be engaged by the contact faces on the hook membersv to hold the door closed.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
LOUIS T. MAYEA.
