To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER L. HUDsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eflingham, in the county of Eiiingham and State of Illinois, and useful Improvements in lVeather-Stops; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved weather stop for application to outside doors of any kind of buildings, the invention, however, being primarily adapted for use in connection with the doors of dwellings.
The main object of the invention is to provide a vertically movable weather stop operatively connected with shaft of the door lock in such a manner as to be raised automatically when said shaft is rocked to release the vide means whereby the connections between the shaft and stop may be locked against movement, thus permitting the stop to be held in lowered position and at the same time locking the door closed.
With the foregoing general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of constructon and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door showing the application of the invention thereof; Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation with the weather stop locked in lowered position; Fig. 3 is a similar view with said stop secured in raised position; Fig. 4- is a vertical transverse section on the plane of the line of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the plane of the line 5-5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a detail transverse section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3; Fig. 7 is a horizontal section as seen on the plane indicated by the line 7 7 of Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the locking member.
In specifically describing the structure shown in the drawings above briefly described, similar characters will be employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and reference will be here in made to the numerous elements by their respective indices. To this end, the numeral have invented certain new the rocking knob door latch, and to pr- .25 with the l designates a door frame in which a door 2 is hingedly mounted, said frame having the usual door sill 3 at its lower end. The door provided with a suitable lock I whose latch is released in the usual manner by the rectangular rock shaft which is equipped with knobs 6 on its ends, this shaft serving as the operating member for the invention as well as that of the latch in the manner to be described.
Contacting slidably with the inside of the door 2 at the lower end thereof is a vertically sliding weather stop 7 which may be either constructed-of wood or metal, said stop being slidably connected to the door by screws 8 passing through slots 9 in plates 10 which are secured to the inner face of said stop, this face being recessed for the reception of the screw heads as shown clearly in Fig. 6. The lower ends of the slots 9 are preferably enlarged a shown at 11 whereby when the stop 7 has been raised to its limit, the heads of the screws 8 may pass through said enlarged ends to permit removal of the entire stop should this be desirable. This also facilitates attachment of the stop as will be readily understood.
A member 12 preferably in the form of an upright bar-like casting is provided with us or the like 13 which are-riveted or otherwise secured to the stop 7, the portion of the member 12 in contact with said stop thus serving to reinforce the latter and to prevent warping thereof whether it be of metal or wood. Perforated ears 1% are formed integrally with and extend toward the door from theupper portion of the casting 12 and receive therein the lower end of a rod 15 whose lower end has thereon a nut 16. The upper end of rod 15 is pivoted to one end of a hell crank 17 which is ifulcrumed at 20 to the door, preferably upon the thickened central portion of the latter, while pivoted to the other end of said crank is a horizontal operating bar 21 having therein a longitudinal slot through which a screw or other suitable fastener 23 passes to slidably support said bar from the door.
A cross bar 24 is provided at its center with a rectangular opening through which the rock shaft 5 passes, the ends of said head being connected by small chains or the like adjacent end of bar 21. When the door is shut and latched, the cross bar 24. stands vertically and both chains 25 are taut, and the bar 21 is then so disposed as to lower the weather stop 7 onto the door sill 3. When, however, either knob 6 is turned in one direction or the other, the bar 21 will be rocked and will pull upon one of the chains 25. The result of this is that the bar 21 will be shifted and in so doing will rock the bell crank 17 to raise the rod 15, thus elevating the stop 7 clear of the sill to permit the door to open without binding. If said door is to be held in opened position, the knob will be released with the result that the stop 7 will descend and in so doing a door checking shoe 26 which is mounted on the lower end of the casting 12, will be brought into contact with the floor, thereby holding the door in its opened position.
The shoe 26 may be of any suitable con struction, but it is preferably in the form of a rocker plate pivoted at 27 to the lower end of casting 12, the pivot being disposed below the center around which the curved edge of the plate is described. This will cause the end portions of the shoe 26 to engage the floor forcibly if the door tends to move in either direction and thus said door will be held against further movement.
Pivotally mounted upon the outer end of the screw 23 is a. locking plate 28 which is substantially triangular, being pivoted at one of its angles and having at this angle an arcuate: operating arm 29 while at another of its angles or corners a stop 30 is provided, the edge between this angle and the remaining one being preferably curved as shown for cooperation with a stop 31 which projects outwardly from the bar 21 adjacent one end of its slot 22 (see Fig. 2). lVhen the plate 28 is swung to the position shown in this figure, the bar 21 cannot move toward the shaft 5 and thus the chains 25 and cross bar 2% will prevent rotation of said shaft, thus locking the door closed. lVhen swung to the position shown in Fig. 3, however, a pin 32 which projects laterally from the free end. of the arm 29 will abut a shoulder 38 at the upper edge of bar 21, when the latter is moved to its limit to ward the shaft 5. Thus, it will be seen that the bar may be locked in either position to support the weather stop 7 above the floor or to retain said stop in operative position asoccasion may demand. Particular emphasis is laid upon the fact that the double acting member 22 while looking the bar 21 in one position also looks the door.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood and it will be appreciated that within the scope of the appended claims, numerous changes may be made without sacrificing the main advanta thereof.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a horizontal weather stop and means for mounting it for vertical movement on the lower end of a door, a horizontally movable bar having a horizontal slot, a fastener passing through said slot for connecting the bar slidably with the door above the weather stop, a locking member for said bar, the aforesaid fastener serving as amounting for said member, and operating connections between said bar and the weather stop for moving the latter vertically when said bar is moved horizontally.
2. A device of the class described comprising a horiaontal weather stop and means for mounting it for vertical sliding on the lower edge of a door, an operating bar for said stop, said bar having a longitudinally extending slot, a fastener passing through said slot for connecting the bar slidably with the door, a stop on said bar adjacent one end of its slot, a double acting locking member pivotally mounted on said fastener and having a shoulder to abut said stop when said member is swung to one position to prevent movement of the operating bar in one direction, other stops respectively on the bar and locking member for holding said bar against movement in the other direction when said locking member is swung to its reverse position, and operating con nections between said bar and the stop.
